My bad. I saw the year listed as 2007 on the front page and figured that was when it actually ran.
Kaja IS, however, the spitting image of Agatha, with red hair instead of blonde.
I wonder what happens to Momo’s old chassis? Does Momo/Marigold keep it as a backup? Does the store recycle it, or refurb it to sell again? Is it donated it to a charity for disembodied or newly-born AI’s?
Given the new chassis is apparently breathtakingly expensive, Marigold and Momo probably traded it in for a discount on the new one, so it’ll likely be refurbished and resold (if this arc doesn’t end with a trade back).
I’m betting on “dream sequence.”
LOOK AT THIS GIRL SHE WILL BE IMPORTANT
(Jeph’s very subtle with these things)
Will she be? I thought it was just a cameo.
First panel, I thought random window dressing, very much in line with the ‘lets draw a cute girl’ philosophy that underlies the strip. Second panel, she looks at our heroes = gonna be important.
Cameo. That’s “Sweet Tits” – Yelling Bird’s friend/victim from filler comics.
Missed the edit – here’s her first appearance in one of several filler comics.
Ha. That’s awesome. I wouldn’t have caught that.
Yeah, the Bird Care book gave it away.
What does Marigold’s shirt say in today’s strip? Looks like GEEK (save ends), which doesn’t make sense.
“Save ends” is a mechanic in D&D 4th Ed. I don’t know the details (I’ve never even actually seen a 4th Ed rulebook yet), but it appears to indicate that a spell’s duration lasts until the target makes a saving throw.
Good guess. You get a saving throw vs ‘save ends’ effects at the end of each turn. Sometimes at the beginning too, if you’re a member of a particular tough-guy class or have the right feat. Or even more often, if you hang around with a Cleric or a Warlord.
They use a different mechanic from 3.x’s saving throws. (which got turned into defenses for 4e) They’re mostly used for shrugging off ongoing effects and bleeding to death. And pushing people into lava.

An odd t-shirt for Marigold to be wearing. So there’s a 50% chance she’ll stop being a geek after any given turn. 60% if she’s an Elite or a Solo.
WAG: just a joke timed for the particular strip, since she was saying she didn’t have time for something geeky.
My turn to not get it. Nice glasses, Poindexter. Faye has shorter hair, and the same glasses as always. And they’re much like Marigold’s. So what’s the joke? I’m obviously missing some culture reference, right?
She broke them, and taped them back together at the bridge. That’s standard shorthand for ‘nerd’. (And ‘Poindexter’ is a standard, if…horribly dated nickname for nerds.)
Oddly, when talking about her terrible morning, she never actually mentioned breaking them, and I had to look back and check to see if they had the tape in the previous non-Turkey strip (they do). Jeph was a bit too subtle for his own good with that one, maybe…
Ah, indeed. I’d remembered Padma busting them several strips ago, but hadn’t made the connection. And I agree it’s darned hard to notice the glasses mending in the art, at least for me. Thanks!
Ach, and thank you…I was racking my brain trying to remember when she broke them, since, looking back, it clearly wasn’t in the morning, but you posted before I finally worked my way back to the facepunching.
