So- we had a family hanukah party last night and I made some most yummy latkes. Made me think of a favorite topic- what party foods can you not pass up?
I can’t walk past- veggies and french onion dip, steamed shrimp, roasted nuts and guacamole.
Food. Just in general. Mr. Lissar can’t walk past shrimp, and I can’t walk past baked goods and pastry. Anything flour-based.
Sorry I’ve been MIA for some time. It’s been a bit stressful. Actually, it’s kind of stressful right now. Tom Kitten has a highish fever and we’re heading in to the doctor’s sometime this afternoon.
Anyway, kisses all round.
Hi Lili!! Sorry about the stress and the sickies, nice to hear from you!
Shrimp. Savory pastries. Bamba:o (AKA “Cheez Doodles without the cheese.”)
ETA, speaking of Hanukka, and following last week’s forest fire in Israel, I found it to be deliciously ironic that the Jews ended up asking the Greeks to come over and put out our fire… during Hanukka! Hey! Where are you taking me, and why am I in this handbasket…?
Like the OP, I cannot pass up latkes, pre-cut veggies and french onion dip. More often than not I’m disappointed in the latkes, but I can’t resist. Oh, and deviled eggs. You can never make deviled eggs for yourself, so they’re always a winner at parties.
My dad was allergic to shrimp. My older sister was allergic to shrimp. I never had a problem.
One day about 10 years ago, I made some yummy shrimp fettuccine. Shortly after I started itching. Everywhere. My body was one giant red splotch.
Called my sister who confirmed that was exactly her reaction. Advised me to get some liquid Benadryl and a bottle of red. Ok…I get the Benadryl, but why the vino?
“Because it goes GREAT with the Benadryl!”
My favorite aunt on my mom’s side passed away Friday. I get to drive to Des Moines Thursday where I hope to remain sensible and not go postal on a few of the uncles and aunts I’ve been pointedly avoiding for years. But I am going because this aunt and her husband were like a second family to me when I was growing up. As soon as I was too big to stay on grandma;s couch, I had a room at their house whenever we visited.
When I turned 16, I had a bed and a set of their car keys. Most of my mom’s brothers and sisters (there were 11 of them altogether) are a complete waste of oxygen. Not these people though, their kids and I were like an extended family and I’m going to be there for them. I did ask one of the sons to shadow me so I don’t get excessively excessive though.
If I’m not around later, send bail money to the Des Moines PD.
So sorry about your Aunt, MBG; you’re in my thoughts and prayers.
I definitely can NOT pass up deviled eggs at a party! And practically anything sweet, although these days I look for the one or two bite items and try to stick to only a few … If there’s any kind of cheese, like bleu cheese especially, I love that or anything with spinach in it. Lurves me some spinach, believe it or not!
Great OP idea, Soapy! And hey, wth are you doing eating seafood?! LOL Yikes, do be careful, though - you can develop a sensitivity to shrimp; I have as I have gotten older! I can’t eat too many of them or I’ll get all red, blotchy and very itchy.
Howdy Y’all! Been a bzzy bear today gettin’ stuff all set up to offically become a workin’ bear again this Wednesday. It’s only part time for now but most likely will evolve to full-time after the start of the noo year. So, I rejoin the rank of worker drone again. Rah.
{{{MBG}}} I’m so sorry for your loss. Your aunt, you and the family (even those you don’t like) are in my thoughts and prayers. If you do need bail, maybe you can convince the Des Moines PD to let you log on to the dope and let us know. Tell 'em your imaginary friends on teh intertoobz will send you money.
Special1 glad the fires are out even if you did have to call in a buncha Greeks to do so. What did y’all tell 'em, the celebration got out of control?
Soapy the shrimp surprised me too though the little things are teh num! I like all party foods. Intresting and because I say it is, true fact re party food. If you don’t put it on a plate and eat it standin’ up it has no calories! Really. Trust me.
lindsaybluth nonsense! Of course one can make deviled aigs for one’s own consumption. This is done more frequently than it should be at da cave. Score is kept on how many are eaten by both of us just to make sure we get an equal number of deviled aigs. Seriously. We keep score to make sure one of us doesn’t eat more than his share. It can get rather unpleasant.
Chikin ‘n dumplin’s for dindin. I need to figure out some type of vegetation to go with. I’m leanin’ towards speckled butter beans cause I sorta kinda want me some and since I’m cookin’ I get to decide. I am mad with power!
Stayed home today due to a myriad of physical complaints. I shall not go into them.
I like shrimp, I like deviled eggs, and any number of nosh type foods. I also adore latkes. Lurves them, I do!
I have, somewhere around here, a zuchinni latke recipe that used roasted red bell peppers. These are awesome too. I used to make these quite a bit when I had a vegetable garden and more zuchinni than I knew what to do with.
MBG, I’m so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family.
Other favorite noshes of mine - Polish sausage - the fresh stuff boiled, then cooled and sliced into coins. With a little yellow mustard. Yum!
Good onion rings - battered, not breaded.
Buffalo chicken dip.
Fruit salad.
Just about anything chocolate - duh!
And it’s just another Monday in paradise. Very very windy - wind chills in the 20s. But sunny, so there’s that.
I’ve got a chicken in the oven roasting, and twice-baked N.O.T.s thawing. Haven’t decided on the veggies yet. That’s pretty much it. I don’t even have a joke to share…
MBG, I too am sorry for your loss. Nothing like losing a loved one when you have to see those around you you dislike and avoid.
Taters, hope you feel better. I too felt too awful to get out of bed this morning and called off as well. I only got out of bed to make some mac 'n cheese
Swampy, I…never thought of it, but I guess I actually could make deviled eggs for just the two of us. And it’s so easy to do it when you use a ziploc bag to pipe out the filling…I like the idea of keeping score too :p. Congrats on the job front!!!

tempting party foods - let’s see -
savory:
spinach/artichoke dip
guacamole
shrimp in any form
garlic flavored things
7 (or 9 or 11 depending on the chef) layer dip
sweet:
trifle
carrot cake
dark chocolate covered anything reasonable
apple flavored baked goods
in general
crunchy things with a hint of flavor (not the overwhelming Mega Extreme doses some prepared foods have).
We went to a friend’s party on Saturday. She had these little baked puff pastry things with cheese and caramelized onions. They were sooooooooo good. So that’d be on the list of things I can’t resist.
The rest of you can have my shrimp and deviled eggs though. I don’t eat either shrimp or eggs.
KT can’t resist prosciutto. Someone at Saturday’s party had eaten all but one slice before we got there. No one wanted to take the last slice until someone cut it in half, and then KT and some other guy swooped in and grabbed the last two pieces.
I made this month’s dessert from my Pillsbury dessert calendar. It’s a beautiful chocolate bundt cake with a peppermint fudgy thing in the middle and a cream cheese frosting/glaze on top and crushed peppermint candies sprinkled over it. But it’s got more going on in the looks department than the taste department. The cake’s a little dry, and the candies stick to your teeth when you eat it. But my coworkers like it so it’s fine. I’m my own worst critic. But I know that there are much better cakes that I make so why make one that’s only so-so?
