I turned on avatars today.

Let’s take a quick look at mine.

Testicle

Toshiro lives!

What am I doing wrong? I have a picture I want to use, I cropped it down to the right size but it keeps getting displayed sideways. The other picture I wanted to use is too big a file even when the picture is cropped down.

Ok, so I am the *expert. Go to picresize.com. It’s very easy to use, a pet monkey could do it. They have a choice to turn the image around or flip it.

*loosely interpreted.
ETA Ike is that your puppy?

If it’s a jpeg, there’s an EXIF setting for orientation. Do what Beckdawrek says or copy the image into a new image with the correct orientation and save as a bmp or png.

He also has an avatar on his Facebook page.

Thanks for that link. It did help me with the picture I am using, and yes that is my dog Duncan when he was a puppy. The other picture that I wanted to use still has too big a file when cropped down to size.

Is it a JPEG? If you want to upload it to IMGUR, I can crop it in Photoshop and save it with a suitably high compression so the file is small enough. But if it needs to be a PNG because of transparency, it’s not quite so simple to make the file smaller. One would have to edit the image.

I think they look TERRIBLE, make the site look messy and out of alignment. But whatever, I just turned them off again and it all looks neat once more. So rock on with your bad selves, I’ll be avatar-less and happy over here

Um … what?

I’m guessing he’s using the default Sultanthemes skin in which lots of things are broken, including username alignment when there are avatars. But IMHO that skin looks like crap anyway.

It looks fine in the old skin.

Thanks for the offer but yeah, the image is PNG. I made it a bit smaller to get the size down but the image looked bad. I will use this one for the time being, and search for a new one.

If you must have transparency, I suppose a workaround would be to make the background the same light grey color as the background on the board, and then save it as a JPEG.

Yes, I am. I’ll try it with the old skin, assuming I can find what that is.

ETA: Oh yeah, that’s much better. Still not sure I’ll use them, though.

You can change it temporarily with the dropdown right at the bottom of the screen in the blue bar – change it to Straight Dope V3.7.3. To change it permanently, go to your UserCP and then to “Edit Options”. The option to change the skin is right at the bottom. Select Straight Dope V3.7.3 and then “Save Changes”.

Damn, I am good. I should go and get a job in IT. I would but I am a lazy ass, that might be a problem.

Depends on how lazy. Many go into IT as they are fairly lazy.

Programmer/Analyst by trade.

Indeed

ooh, thanks for the info on the skin. This fixes the “can’t see what text you’ve selected” issue, which is really annoying.
