I don’t have time to dig into this right now but it is on my “to-do” list and I will get into it. I want to fix that if I can. And maybe come up with something else.
And hey, as far as Ed’s concerned, for all his sins, a few things to consider here, please:
It was Ed Zotti who edited Cecil for all these years. His predecessors only hung in for a couple of years or so; Ed went the distance. Anyone who manages to do something for the better part of 40 years deserves some commendation.
It was Ed who syndicated The Straight Dope column to newspapers across the country.
It was Ed who sold the idea of the books, first to the University of Chicago Press, then Ballantine.
It was Ed who sold the idea of The Straight Dope to AOL, where we got our start on the internets.
It was Ed who sold the concept of The Straight Dope to A&E, where The Straight Dope as TV show was a reality hit way way ahead of its time. It took another nine years before shows like “Mythbusters” got popular. Proof that indeed Timing Is Everything.
It was Ed who persuaded the Chicago Reader to take a chance on us and let him have their little placeholder website when the AOL contract expired. And not only that, to continue hosting it for us on their rudimentary server.
It was Ed who hired all the moderators, and who recommended me for what I’m doing now.
Ed is currently working on a contract for another Straight Dope book, so he continues on.
Ed was not perfect. Who of us are, especially when your moves are so public and there’s a zillion armchair managers who could have done it better? As someone who worked for him for over 20 years, I got scars and stories. As you would.
But you gotta give credit where it’s due and there’s a lot due-ing here.
So let’s give credit where it’s due and not be bashing Ed. Ultimately he did the best he could with what he had going at the time.
And let’s move forward.
Just saying. Your opinion could vary. If you want to discuss it further, please open another thread somewhere else.
Thanks.
