I turned on avatars today.

I’m sure this has been addressed somewhere in this thread but it’s big and I do not wish to read through it all to find the answer. It seems to me that finding an image that fits the 50x50 limitation is hard (but not too hard I guess, given the proliferation of avatars since they’ve been allowed…).

Every one I have tried gets rejected for being too large, and I have looked online for resizing options and am coming up zeroes. Any help?

Let me help you. Go to picresize.com it’s easy enough for a 3yo to do. It gives you an option for custom sizing. If I did it anyone could. :)I so tech-y and shit!

Hey…it worked! Thanks! The damn images are so fracking small though. They really should allow up to 100x100. You can barely see them.

Winner, winner; chicken dinner!

Chicken *liver *dinner.

:flees:

I believe Tuba said something about wanting to see how the server handles things first, then she might allow larger avatars some time in the future. (Probably after people get used to them as well)

I just kill me;)

(tech is now my life)

Ah geez, see? Give you guys an inch and you want to take a mile.

What is it with the people who don’t like avatars bitching? You can freaking turn them off. Christ.

Oh, I get the joke you made. What did that take? 24hours +? I am slow sometimes.

I think it was a joke.

Most likely, but considering the fuss over avatars, you never know.

Why is there such a huge gap between the right edge of the avatar and the user name? It is about 2x the width of the avatar.

Because you’re using the new theme. The original one doesn’t do that.

BTW, how long will the phrase “new theme” get used?

Other than the avatar, the new theme is much better.

Blame the boomers.

The Pittsburgh Mills Galleria is a shopping mall near me that opened 13 years ago (and is slowly dying as we speak).

I called it “the new mall” when it opened. I still refer to it this way and people know the mall I’m talking about.

If you prefer, we can start calling it “the theme where nothing works right”, or perhaps “Ed’s Folly”.

There was fussing on both sides, you now have avatars and nobody is really complaining about them being here now.
You won-deal with it.

I don’t have time to dig into this right now but it is on my “to-do” list and I will get into it. I want to fix that if I can. And maybe come up with something else.

And hey, as far as Ed’s concerned, for all his sins, a few things to consider here, please:

It was Ed Zotti who edited Cecil for all these years. His predecessors only hung in for a couple of years or so; Ed went the distance. Anyone who manages to do something for the better part of 40 years deserves some commendation.

It was Ed who syndicated The Straight Dope column to newspapers across the country.

It was Ed who sold the idea of the books, first to the University of Chicago Press, then Ballantine.

It was Ed who sold the idea of The Straight Dope to AOL, where we got our start on the internets.

It was Ed who sold the concept of The Straight Dope to A&E, where The Straight Dope as TV show was a reality hit way way ahead of its time. It took another nine years before shows like “Mythbusters” got popular. Proof that indeed Timing Is Everything.

It was Ed who persuaded the Chicago Reader to take a chance on us and let him have their little placeholder website when the AOL contract expired. And not only that, to continue hosting it for us on their rudimentary server.

It was Ed who hired all the moderators, and who recommended me for what I’m doing now.

Ed is currently working on a contract for another Straight Dope book, so he continues on.

Ed was not perfect. Who of us are, especially when your moves are so public and there’s a zillion armchair managers who could have done it better? As someone who worked for him for over 20 years, I got scars and stories. As you would.

But you gotta give credit where it’s due and there’s a lot due-ing here.

So let’s give credit where it’s due and not be bashing Ed. Ultimately he did the best he could with what he had going at the time.

And let’s move forward.

Just saying. Your opinion could vary. If you want to discuss it further, please open another thread somewhere else.

Thanks.
