They do have a fridge/freezer on-site. In fact, he’s the one who maintains supply in it. He did tell me today it’s having trouble keeping up. I’ve currently got every reusable ice pack we own freezing for him to take in tomorrow to help it along, at his request. He has checked body temperature since arriving home, and was OK.
I may go with a KN95 mask tomorrow when outside my apartment, depending on what AQI looks like in the morning. They do seem to do better on smoky air than my usual fabric masks. I have a list of minor maintenance chores I do on the first of the month (easier to remember), and changing the HVAC filter is one of them, even when it’s not fire season. I suspect cat litter dust is a bit of a thing around here.
Buddy is less than thrilled that I’m not willing to open the door and let him out. He’s just going to have to cope. AQI is in the yellow zone, which is iffy for cats in my opinion, and it’s way too hot to be opening the door for him to just sit there for a few minutes deliberating (recent new quirk of his).
Our vet was the one who recommended changing the filters monthly because we had cats. Cats have little lungs that are much more sensitive than hooman lungs, plus they are smaller and it takes less smoke and ash to damager their lungs than ours.
Buddy will just have to suck it up and take a nap with you. Poor babby.
PS I have a lot of reusable ice packs that I don’t use but can’t throw away because they are still good. Want me to send them your way? (I get them when I buy cheese making supplies so more will be coming shortly.)
Evening all. Soccer has been coached and Jack’s (a local burger chain) provided the evening sustenance. Taking a break from the tackleball game to catch up with the MMP (we’re averaging over 50 posts a day so far this week, so it takes a lot of catching). Temperature is heading back down to the 60’s tonight, so may turn off the AC and open the windows again.
JtC, Seanette, fortunately we don’t have the fire problems here in N. Ali-bama (we have to make do with tornadoes…), but hope it doesn’t get much worse. And VBC apparently is not a fan of the vet…
lucky, hope the power loss and burritos are both where they belong.
Nut, congrats on finishing off the Master’s, and I see you’re going to be a Rhodes scholar for a little while (the Greek Islands are marvelous). Enjoy.
Wheelie, glad the heart check is pretty good. And a nice way to celebrate, too…
OK, might as well head back to finish out the tackleball game. All y’all take care.
I went to the pharmacy to get a flu shot. They’ve changed policies. I need an appointment I can ONLY make online. It’s not like I have to have a flu shot STAT, so I can wait. On my way home from the gym, a guy started screaming, “You stole my watch! I’m gonna kill you, you motherf----r!” I wasn’t sure if he was yelling at me, as I wear a watch, but I arrived home unscathed.
shoe, dear, we discussed this after you fainted at work and got that pricey ride to the ER, remember? I thought the deal was that you weren’t going to go a whole day without eating. I know some days it’s hard, but if you could sip at a milkshake or yogurt drink or SOMETHING, it’d keep your online-but-real family from worrying ourselves sick and keep you from face-planting onto the floor or Monkey. A chicken pot pie has 370 calories. I hope you also had a bunch of other good stuff. Do they feed you on your meal break at work?
Well, that sucks. Glad you found someone so much easier the second time around. When I was married, I had to mow because the now-ex had allergies. When we got a Husqvarna that could spin cookies, he decided I was having too much fun and was miraculously cured…except when it came to spraying weeds on our 5 acres. Sorry. I can tell I sound bitter, and I don’t like that.
MetalMouse, I hear you on the weeds. I had nice neighbors who apparently liked weeds. Their weeds kept advancing on my lawn. I’m not a big fan of lawns where it’s too dry to maintain them, like Wyoming, but my house was by a main road, and in a small town, everyone knew I was a teacher, so I heard about it if my lawn was weedy. And thanks for the advice re: travel agents!
Wheelz, glad you’re feeling reassured. Even gladder that it sounds like you’ll be with us for a long time to come. And that breakfast sounds yum!
They must have meant “My Country 'Tis of Thee,” which is the same melody as “God Save the Queen.” It’s not the only melody we stole from the Brits. The melody of “The Star-Spangled Banner” stole a British melody that was supposedly used as a sobriety test. Not sure we passed.
nettie, I hope today wasn’t indicative of what your DH will be going through. It sounds miserable.
nut, congrats on completion! TIme for a victory lap!
boo, I heard many dollar stores have cut way back on the hours they’re open, too.
I don’t know if it’s done over there, but it should be. Also, sounds like a romantic trip into the country with your honey. Is the doc appointment just for semi-annual tests?
We’re under a red flag alert for high winds/fire as well, though not in the zone where the power companies have announced planned outages or those where a go bag is being recommended. I’ll water the front yard tomorrow morning before the air quality gets nasty.
Hour 12 after my bivalent Covid vaccine and flu vaccine: not much to report. My Covid arm has gotten a little more sore, but only if I push on it, so I don’t. Both sites slightly warm to the touch. Boring is good.
Off to bed, which should be interesting since I can only sleep on my side, not my back or stomach. Guess I have thought of that instead of feeling so clever getting them both out of the way on the same trip. Oops.
Nothing really juicy. It’s just how do you lose a piece of plastic that needs a 5 foot by 6 inch by 6 inch box to hold it? Especially one that has Maserati stamped all over it.
Morning, mumpers! It’s 16c/60f with a predicted high of 18c/64f and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “Just balls. I’ve got fucking nothing”. Sounds about right, since we had meatballs and sketties for dinner last night!
@Bumbazine our new figurehead is Charlie. He’s decided to be King Charles III since he gets to choose his name, and Camilla is Queen Consort since she’s royalty by marriage and not by birth. Much shuffling round of titles in the next few days while they decide who gets to be what.
Typical media frenzy so far, I am avoiding tv/radio and much of farcebook too because it gets quite ridiculous. Yes, most of us under the age of 70 grew up with nobody but Lizzie on the throne, but the monarchy is so far removed from our lives that I struggle to understand why people are standing outside royal residences bawling their eyes out.
Swampy sadly devilled aigs aren’t really a thing over here. However, if you were to turn up with a casserole and perhaps some cucumber sandwiches (white bread, crusts cut off) then that might be deemed acceptable
Off to do boring irk now, still mopping up from the end of session stuff as nobody bothered to read my handover notes nor follow the very precise instructions I left before I abandoned the office for two days. That means I get all the crap to deal with now that I’m back. I has a peeve.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 71 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 81 with rain/tstorms/apocalypse predicted for the day. I hope it holds off until I am back from the doc. Nellie this is a semi-annual face to face with my PCP. He likes to see folks at least twice a year. This is all routine, i.e. check pulse and blood pressure to assure that I am indeed still alive and he’ll renew all my ‘scripts for six months. Next Tuesday I get to see the vampire and will get my flu and pneumonia vaccine. While I’m there this mornin’ I’ll ask about gettin’ an appointment for the plague booster. Outside of the doc I foresee high sloth for the rest of the day. Sup shall be grilled chikin tenders sallit and cheesey garlic bread.
OK, BooFae has informed me that deviled aigs are not a thing, so guess I won’t do that. I could show up with a plate of cucumber sammiches, I suppose. Or maybe cream cheese and pee-kahn finger sammiches? At any rate, they were not goin’ to get my fancy milk glass with gold trim deviled aig plate. That only comes out at Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, alas, alack, and bother of all bothers, I suppose I must needs purtify and don attire acceptable for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. I just hope the doc appreciates all the trouble I go through just to visit him.
For some ridiculous reason, I find myself unnaturally interested in the Monarchy and the whole royalty things. I can’t even claim it’s part of my heritage, since my ancestors were pretty much all Polish farmers and miners. I can’t keep track of the ranks and the titles and all that fiddle-faddle, not to mention who inherits titles and lands and all that stuff. I’ve watched several documentaries that start at the birth of England, of or what was to become England, I’ve looked at charts in Wiki, and of course, I’ve read way too many cheesy period romance novels… Maybe it’s just a big puzzle that I’m trying, in vain, to figure out.
However, I do think Elizabeth II was a classy lady who did what she believed was best for her subjects. I can’t imagine what it was like for a 25-y/o girl to become Queen. But she carried it off rather well, I think. It will be interesting to watch her spawn take the reigns (hehehe)
That’s our predicted high, too, but we’re starting at 60° - I opened all the windows yesterday evening and it’s been loverly in here!
You have this frequently - is it something you cheese up yourself, or do you buy it ready to warm?
I’m going to have to run to Food Lion for mozzarella - can’t believe I forgot to get some, since I’ve been planning this lasagna for a week. Sheesh… I did remember to get the sauce out of the freezer yesterday, so there’s that. Oh, and I should check for parm - I think I’ll buy a pack of the fancy shredded stuff. I like really cheesy lasagna.
FCD is going to take his folks on a ride thru a few other areas of the county to show them where they could (should) be living. And there’s a “Taste of St. Mary’s” event in Leonardtown square tomorrow. Local restaurants will have booths, plus there will be a classic car show and other stuff. I’m going to suggest we check it out.
Apart from fatigue and weakness, FIL seems to be doing much better. And he really perks up when Tobias is around. Plus Taz seems to have decided that FIL’s lap is the bestest! He’s still easily confused and sometimes we have no idea what he’s talking about (nor does he) but he’s been pleasant and all the emotional breakdowns of the first day here haven’t resurfaced. And I think the new meds schedule is helping.
The plans for next week include a visit to the apartment complex on Tues, an appointment with our money guy on Weds, and departure on Fri. Then next Sat, we’ll meet with a realtor in Ocala and see what he’s got to say about their house.
They’re still not totally convinced, but I think it’s becoming plain to MIL that they have to move. FIL won’t make a decision - honestly, I think he’s incapable at this point. Even something as simple as “What would you like to watch on TV” seems beyond him. So it’s going to fall to her. And she’s got the added worry of their son in Ocala - it’s hard to tell what he thinks.
OK, no more depressing updates for the moment. But thanks for letting me spew. I’ve got a semi-busy day planned and I’ll start soon by running to the store for cheeses. Then the fun begins.
To be honest, a lot of people here are hugely underwhelmed when it comes to the titles. None of it has any real meaning to us, nor any bearing on our lives. In fact, a good deal of the titles are ceremonial and had to be created simply to be given to someone - mostly they seem to govern in which order various members of the family enter and sit in Westminster Abbey!
The biggest thing at the moment is discussion about who would assume the title of Duke of Edinburgh. It belonged to the queen’s husband and obviously has been unused since his death. She apparently had an idea of who she wanted it to go to, but Charlie may disagree. His eldest son has already been touted as assuming one of his father’s titles (Cornwall) and there’s some speculation about which order those would go - Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge, or Cambridge and Cornwall. The former seems more likely as the Cornwall title is older and carries more weight than Cambridge which was a made up one for him when he got married.
Then there’s the endless speculation on whether or not Wills become Prince of Wales, in which case the Duke titles become reasonably pointless as he’ll be referred to as the PoW instead. This kind of thing is what our news reports will be full of for the next couple of weeks, that’s why I’m not bothering with TV at all.
Morning all. Slept again without AC, will see how far into the day I can get (66F now, but heading to 83F with a 1-in-7 chance of rain) before switching it back on. Swimmin-n-sauna-n-soccer coaching should take up a fair part of the day, we’ll see about the rest of it.
FCM, sounds like you guys have a good plan for FIL/MIL…and not surprised, I expect Toby would perk up most folks, albeit Roxy might exhaust them quickly…
boofae, I can just imagine the papers are full of this Royal stuff too, so media in England will be tied in knots for a couple weeks, which…but no, that’s speculation for the politics thread, not the MMP. Hang in there and read a good book or two…
swampy, I only get one visit per year, think it’s my insurance coverage or something. And the 'scrips are only for 90 days…I think I like your Doc better.
BBBoo, nellie, guess I need to call/make an appointment either with my Doc or Walgreens about getting shot twice, need to plan it though what with the soccer and all…will shoot for next Wednesday, I think.
OK, pills have been taken and once I can be bother to put on some form of clothes, the newspaper will be rescued from the driveway or wherever it got pitched this time. Everyone have a good Firday.
swampy. I think Death Chikken and Funeral Taters would be welcome.
I was very upset yesterday about the Queen. I spent a lot of time online and watching the teevee coverage. I hope today is better.
Retirement is not what I expected. There is a small very tiny thought in the back of my mind about going back to irk. The Hallmark store is hiring part time $20-28 dollars per hour……
FCM my guess is that FIL enjoys being around people (not that his wife isn’t people but you know what I mean). Plus his day now has structure.
Sigh. That’s really tough. At the moment we’re dealing with a minor version of this. My youngest has discovered some of BF’s online activity that, if not outright cheating, is unacceptable. Despite my attempts at levity (“Maybe he was looking for HVAC cost savings, and thought that group could help manage with just fans?”), the Missus ended up traveling to console/advise her down south. Apparently there’s watching and there’s becoming too involved with, umm, Individual Contributors. .
I’m remaining clear of the issue, but at this point all his belongings (at her apartment) have perished in a tragic fire. Shame, that.
On the good news front: My eldest’s membership in the OOTSK (Order of the Sleepless Knights) brought him to our town for the day, and got to have dinner with him last night. Fun to catch up and hear of all the doings in the Far Nawth and Far East.
More good news: Appointment with the eye-docs today. Hopefully they’ll declare the end of retina danger and I can get out and resume my important fishing and camping tasks (my job now). I dread being subjected to “the machine” again – as last time they refused to tell me what it would do, fearing I’d head for the door like many of the patients. (It involves poking things into your eye). But I’ll manage, and the missus has returned to chauffeur me afterward.
Let me add my encouragement as well. After the studies and finally getting my machine, life improved more than I can describe. It’s the boiling frog scenario, the decline is gradual and unnoticed. I didn’t realize why I was failing at work, and on the “improvement plan” for the first time in my life. The change was astounding. I am so enamored of my CPAP that I bought an identical backup on eBay to ensure I am never without it.
They’re really such a personal issue it’s hard to give any generic recommendations. At the start, the CPAP providers let me try a variety of them, including the pillows, chin straps, etc. All I can say is try everything they’ll let you take home, and give them a chance. My only other advice is to try the machine if you take naps. For some reason, my subconscious wasn’t screaming ALIEN FACE HUGGER! into my brain when I was upright in the recliner. I spent weeks tearing the mask off in the night and is only stopped after getting used to it during naps. Then it was smooth sailing. Best of luck to you.
Hope everyone has a good day/week, will try to post updates later.
