I’m starting to ponder what ice cream I’ll make for the 4th of July weekend. I’d like to make ice cream that’s a good, yummy flavor, which can be eaten alone (by kids) and added into a cocktail (for adults).
So far I have:
Coconut (can be mixed with a Pina Colada)
Coffee (can be mixed into a White Russian)
Has anybody ever done this before? Did you blend it with ice? What flavors would be good? And what other cream-based cocktails are there?
Chocolate ice cream plus Baileys, creme de menthe, or rum is excellent.
The way I’ve made alcoholic milk shakes is to add ice cream, liqueur, and maybe a little milk. That makes a nice, creamy, delicious milkshake with a kick. I’ve never added ice, since there’s no call for ice in a regular milkshake.
Mint Chocolate Chip / Grasshopper
Bailey’s, Amaretto and Kaluha with vanilla ice cream. For a virgin version use coffee ice cream and butter pecan or something nutty.
Speaking of nutty, one of my favorite obscure mixed drinks is Nuts & Berries, mix Frangelico’s and Chambord and shake with cream. Serve up or in a rocks glass over ice. You could make an ice cream version.
What about mint? I don’t mean the mint-chip flavor – I mean fresh mint, like you grow in your garden. That’s next up on my homemade ice cream list. You could fashion some sort of mojito-like drink for the adults.
Speaking of mojitos - what about lime ice cream or sorbet? That would be good! Or lemon. Seems to me those could go into a variety of cocktails, and you could mix them with fresh berries for the kids.
Hm, maybe I’ll do lime next instead of mint! Since the weather’s finally cooperating…
When hubby and I lived in a suburb of Baltimore, we frequented a bar that would make any drink that featured cream with vanilla ice cream instead, on request. A White Russian, made with vanilla ice cream instead of cream or half and half, is delightful. I’m going to guess the new wave of flavored vodkas make it even easier. .
Vanilla vodka, strawberry vodka, chocolate vodka, all would blend delightfully with vanilla ice cream to make a yummy cocktail!
Mint! I’ve made mint ice cream before, and it’s came out lovely! Perhaps double the amount of flavoring if you’re going to use most of the batch with booze.
My friend said that someone made him a beer float one time and it was excellent. They used a high-quality vanilla ice cream in a very dark beer (Guinness stout?)
I don’t drink beer so I don’t know if it would be good, but he swears it was awesome.
Just FYI - in South Africa, ice cream and liqueur cocktail has a name - it is called a “Dom Pedro”. The “standard” is vanilla ice cream + Kahlua, but vanilla + Amarula (local marula fruit cream - a liiiiitle like Bailey’s) is popular, as is peppermint liqueur and choc-mint ice cream.
I was going to recommend a frozen Velvet Hammer, which I remember my parents serving when I was a kid, but I looked it up and realized it’s all booze and vanilla ice cream- not so much fun for a kid!
I used to make a poor boy Brandy Alexander with brandy and vanilla ice cream ( and a little milk to get it going). Great stuff, though it sneaks up on you.
