It’s freaking pouring in western Mitten State today.
I’ve done literally exactly the same. It sucks. You have my complete sympathy, although, sadly, no useful advice.
Does it help to know that other ppl do the same? And then kick themselves as well?

Crush trauma to two fingers on my left hand from the log splitter. Lots of blood. Wifey RN put gauze on it and took me to urgent care. They put better bandages on and sent me to the ER. No pain to speak of, I can wiggle my fingers, and I can feel with my fingertips. Waiting for a quack to (probably) sell me some stitches. Wifey RN will come to pick me up when they’re done. Probably in several hours.
Fun day of roaming some more remote areas, until we got home and the front door was not actually closed. No apparent disturbance, all belongings where they belonged, but Buddy was nowhere to be found. He just now showed up on the patio, came inside, got hugged, and is chowing down (his canned gunk for supper, plus some treats). He appears to be fine.
OK, so the lower digestive disturbance did not improve matters. Think I’ll skip that fiber supplement tonight.
I’m about 112 miles from the Oak Fire, which is southeast of my location. Do we have any MMPers closer to that mess? It started yesterday and is at nearly 12k acres, with behavior the fire experts are calling “explosive”.
OWIE!!! I hope that you are right and it will just be a few stitches and no complications.
Oh NO! I’m glad nothing was missing and that Buddy is home safe. Are your doors cat-proof? I once had a regular sized cat who figured out how to jump on the door knob to unlatch the door so she could hook it with her claws and escape.
So, tonight hubs suggested we try the new pizza place about 15 miles down the road and we left after giving the cats their dinner. By the time we had dropped my ballot off and got to the pizza place, it was close to 6. We were pretty shocked to learn that the only restaurant in town closed at 6 every night. We were able to order to go and it was pretty good pizza but I don’t think that their business hours are the best.
Finally got a bed. The doctor should see me soon.
If you were having a heart attack or gushing blood, they would have gotten you in much faster. Be happy you were able to wait.
Things must be different up there, three or four years ago hubs got a couple of stitches at the local Doc in a Box. I thought that was what they were for, patching up the minor stuff so the trauma docs can deal with the heart attacks and gushing blood.
Hubs wanted to cook some beer in the morning and has chosen to cook inside because it isn’t cooling down at night. He’s set up in the kitchen with the pot timed to start heating the water so he can start cooking around 6am. This is a fascinating process that involves many trips back and forth from the kitchen and his hobby room. GG is about all worn out from all the helping he was doing.
Pretty sure neither one can figure that out, and the bolt SHOULD have been latched as well and wasn’t. Allie was inside when we got home. DH and I have conflicting memories of which of us was last out. He thinks I was, I think he was.
Gotta agree with you that a restaurant closing during a prime dinner time is suboptimal for them and for their would-be customers.
Please be more careful, since you probably need those fingers to type to us and to make those great meals for your wife. Also, please follow medical advice instead of machismo.
you know i was reading about the log splitter and had a bad feeling about it … the small experience I have with chopping firewood was when foster dad bought 8 cords of wood unchopped and I inquired about a wood splitter and he said “no way in hell” as hed seen too many people lose hands and fingers due to those things ,
After the scare you both got, I’m fairly sure that the bolt will always be latched from now on. The important part is that the hoomans have learned an important lesson and no harm came of it.
I chose to wait outside, under the shade of a 30-year-old tree and enjoy the breeze and view. Plus I wanted to smoke. In the half hour I was there, I saw five vehicles come into the parking lot, families/groups get out and go to the door, read the hours and then leave disappointed.
It makes me sad, I was excited about having a real pizza place close by and I doubt they will last long.
No apology needed. One of the things I really like about MMP is to hear about people’s interests. I now have an interest to go to Eureka Springs and try fly fishing. Probably won’t happen any time soon, but if the stars line up…
Two weeks ago hubby and I came home from a walk and realized we left the back door wide open. Oops. So now we’re both checking up on each other when we go to bed and when we leave the house.
Poor kitty. Sometimes I wish we could know what they are thinking.
If the owner was there, saw that, and doesn’t change things, the place deserves to go out of business. Pay the employees OT to get the customers in, especially when starting. Word of mouth is critical. And a pizza place closing at 6 pm? Why bother even being open?
Yesterday I finally gave the conservatory panels a second washing, but could only wash the ones in the shade. Those look much better, and the others I’ll get after our getaway.
We got about 3 dozen cherry tomatoes off of the two plants - the summer heat and last Wednesday’s downpour really helped things along. We’ll probably have another dozen or two by the time we’re back home on Thursday.
Was planning to do more work in the yard, but the rain made the decision for us. We are not yet in a drought state, but we are definitely in a critical situation. Much of Switzerland has already banned open fires, private fireworks, and some places might even cancel the official fireworks planned for August 1st. Just glad that the current heat wave has an end in sight.
Today we’re going up in the mountains. Tomorrow it’s supposed to rain there. Also on Wednesday. Guess that means we’ll have to enjoy the hotel room.
Stay hydrated!
Doozy of a thunderstorm here all night.
I used to love storms, it was like I derived energy from them. Now they just scare me and draw up the anxiety.
I don’t like this shell of a husk of the person I used to be.
Part of that is me mourning/being pissed off. Gentleman Caller has ghosted me. Granted, my phone was unreachable for a cpl weeks, but as soon as it was back on, contacting him was literally the first thing I did.
I’ve texted, I’ve called - straight to v.m. each time, so maybe his phone is on the fritz? - and I’ve explained that I wasn’t ignoring him, but … nothing. It’s like shouting into the void.
More lightning. More thunder.
We experienced this once - we lived in Florida in a fairly remote development. FCD made me stay in the car with our then-toddler daughter while he walked thru the house. I guess we just hadn’t pulled the door closed tightly enough to latch. But it was spooky!
Could be a staffing issue? Around here restaurants seem to have a hard time staying fully staffed. It’s weird to see a section of empty tables but they can’t seat anyone because they don’t have servers to cover that area.
Despite hardly doing anything yesterday, I was exhausted and crashed early. Maybe it’s the heat? Or just one of those things…? Anyway, before we head to the boat, I need to clean the critter fountain. I should have done it yesterday, but I didn’t. Nor did I scoop their box, so that’s also high on the agenda. And I haven’t made the list for our trip. What the heck did I do yesterday??? Shame on me!
OK, I did get the chicken smoked, and I just now realized I left the smoker outside and open on the front porch. Dammit. Hope it’s still there. Anyway, I cut up the chicken, bagged it, and stuck it in the freezer so it’ll be ready for the cooler. Whatever night we eat it, I’ll put it in the oven for however long it takes to thoroughly warm it, and it should be good. And that further reminds me - I need to fill a few coke bottles with water and freeze them to keep things cold for our trip.
So, a week from today, we’ll be on the road. blech At least FCD’s car is pretty comfy, and gas prices have been falling, so that helps. Still, it’s Florida and at least 13 hours on the road followed by a week dealing with his folks. I apologize in advance for all the bitching and whining I’ll be doing here, because I’ll need to hold my tongue around them - they get their feelings hurt so easily, and I know a lot of this isn’t their fault. Getting really old sucks. So feel free to ignore me all next week. ![]()
And Happy Sweltering Sunday!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 72 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 92 with possible rain/tstorms/apocalypse this afternoon. We shall see. The big item on today’s agenda is deheathenization followed by some form of McN.O.L. and lots of sloth. I predict nappage as well. I don’t want to do anything, so I won’t.
shoe sorry about the job interview.
Hippy glad you enjoyed your vacation.
FlyBoy OWIE! Hope the fingers are better today.
Nettie glad nothin’ was missin’ and that the kitties were OK.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, purtification for deheathenization must commence. Hope the power is back.
Happy Sunday Y’all!
Up. caffeinated, and sheveled. Day one of vacation, and I am having an attack of feline paralysis. Luckily the coffee pot has a thermal carafe, so I’m set till bathroom time.
Ouch! Hope they heal quick.
Sorry about GC, shoe.
Ouch flyboy!
Do you just use the knob lock on your door seanette?
Sorry about GC shoe. Could it be that he’s incommunicado for the same reason that you were for a couple of weeks?
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, dogparked and fixing to do KP and the week’s breakfast / lunch prep. I need to get a shower shortly though, so’s I can go have coffee with the heathens.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
Breaking alert:
The cat has hiccups.
We now resume our normal programming
That’s what I’m hoping. He seemed emotionally mature and capable of communicating difficult stuff, so for him to just poof disappear is … weird.
And concerning.
Enjoy the entertainment! Hell, get video if you can.
Thanks, everyone.
The accident happened at about 16:30. I got home at midnight. I have 16 stitches; 8 on the largest wound on the underside of my middle finger, 6 on the top of my middle finger, an 2 on the underside of my index finger.
Third time pays for all, eh?
Anyway… I was about six hours into splitting logs, and I was getting tired. All I’d eaten were the eggs and bacon for breakfast. I was thinking maybe I should quit and rent the splitter another day to finish the other half of the pile. I put a log onto the machine. I guess I was thinking about knocking off. And After putting the log on, I failed to remove my fingers from between it and the foot plate before I brought down the ram. Since X-rays (or ‘imaging’ as they call it now) showed no bone damage, I’m hypothesising that my two fingers were caught on the teeth on the floor plate that hold the log from slipping.
No pain at the hospital. In triage, I estimated the pain level a 1 on a scale from 0 to 10. I could feel with my fingertips, and I could move my fingers. No pain during suturing… because my two fingers were full of lidocaine. I’ve always known about a ‘surgeon’s stitch’, but I’d never seen one being done. That was neat. The PA (not a doctor) put the suture needle in both pieces of flesh, and then wrapped that end three times around her forceps. Then she went back and caught the needle and pulled it through the loops she’d made.
This morning my fingers are sore, but they are not actively hurting. If I put pressure on the sutures, or try to curl my fingers, then they’re more sore. I need to figure out how to shower. I hate being in public unless I’m clean and properly attired, and there I was dirty and sweaty in my grubby clothes. Too tired and hurt to shower last night, so I had to go to bed dirty. The instructions I got in the stack of papers I was sent home with say ‘Keep the wound uncovered unless it can get dirty.’ So showering shouldn’t be a problem going foreward; but I’m not sure about it with a fresh wound.
If I can get cleaned up, we’ll go out to breakfast. I can’t really cook this way. Don’t really wanna, anyway. Then we need to hook up the log splitter and take it back to the hardware store.
lol in the old days you’d have a helluva story to tell the guys 'round the checkerboard at the hardware store
Additional:
The guy who went to the registration desk right after me had a bandaged left hand. I heard him say he’d crushed his hand in a log splitter. I let out a ‘Ha!’ I held up my hand and told him I was in for the same thing. What are the odds?
Back to me. The woman at the registration desk had my name and insurance information. I don’t recall ever having been a patient there. In the almost-19 years I’ve been here, it’s possible; but I don’t remember. My PCP is not part of Peacehealth, but everything came up when I gave her my name, DOB, and last-four. I was wearing a KN-95 mask, there was a plexiglass partition and it was noisy. Now, the skin on the backs of my arms tears fairly easily. I’d dropped my phone between the car seat and the console. Naturally I hit something under the seat, and I noticed in the foyer that I was bleeding. I got a tissue from the dispenser to hold over it. With the conditions it was hard to make the receptionist know that I was in for my left hand, which had been nicely bandaged at the urgent care place we went first. When I got to the triage nurse she verified I was in for my left hand. She said she could put a bandage on my right hand so that I wouldn’t have to hold the (fresh) tissue on it. I told her a not-too-sticky bandage, because too-sticky ones tend to tear my skin when I take them off. So I got a kid’s bandage, blue with Bugs Bunny on it. I’ll take it off after the Spousal Unit gets up.
Wifey reports that the cats were good all afternoon and evening, and they didn’t go to be while I was gone.
