Anita and Nitwatch have one or two posts only with Straight Dope. They both are from Florida, as is Mark, and they both posted, one right after the other, defending Mark. Both from AOL, as is Mark. What a bunch of coincidences…
I think VegForLife responded to all of their thoughts quite well, as did many other people.
This concept of defending bigotry because “everyone does it” really repulses me.
Sure, we all have our bigotries. Little, big, latent, overt, supressed, whatever - we all are guilty. But that does not get us off the hot seat when confronted with it. That does not make it OK. The goal of all human beings should be to try to minimize bigotry, not feed into it and excuse it.
First of all, nitwatch, just because some companies practice illegal hiring doesn’t make it right. There is a big difference between working for someone who does it and actually doing it yourself. When an able-bodied person wants to work, and can’t because of guys like Mark, it puts an unnecessary financial/tax burden on all of us.
Secondly, the main point of this thread is that some people feel compelled to openly, vocally insult people that don’t fit their personal views of how folks should look. It’s rude and wrong and Mark violated the basic rules of manners by posting the way he did. He went much farther than what was necessary to make a point, and did so with no regard to other people’s feelings. He talks as if he’s an authority on fat and sloth, and has a little checklist of assumptions that can make or break a person’s chance at honest employment. That SUCKS and there’s no place for it in civilized society. You shouldn’t be defending someone who feels compelled to violate a person’s civil liberties because he has a hard-on about fat people. Incidently, he never said what the limit is on fat. 20% over average? 30%? 15%? Nitwatch, you never know. You may be just an ice cream soda away from being on his shit list.
I am quite sure that most people find bigotry appalling, yet most people are bigots in one way or another. Those who try to deny it are fools and liars. Hey - at least I POST my e-mail address for anyone who wishes to contact me, unlike some of you hit and run folks.
I’m bigoted towards fat folks. Big friggin deal. So long as I not act on it, there is no social problem. I’m also very bigoted towards criminals, especially car jackers, but when I investigated becoming an officer I discovered that I was close to 50 times more likely to shoot the son of a bitch than the other officers would, so I never signed up. I did not act on my bigotry. (My brother, who is a Chief of Police, agreed with my decision. Now, he has his own bigotry’s but in his profession cannot allow them to influence him.)
I wonder how many of you gripers here dislike homosexuals probably even more than I have problems with fat folk? (Notice - I never said hate.) That is bigotry. Maybe you who are without sin, who are appalled at all forms of bigotry, might not quite like the way Catholics practice their beliefs. Perhaps you go into a slow burn when you go into what used to be a 7-11 and buy stuff from the ‘towel head’ behind the counter, who jacked up the prices. Anyone here who would not sleep with an available Black man or woman? If so – bigotry. Maybe especially here in the tropical climates, you find you like blondes more than brunets. You feel better if they dye their hair. Bigotry. Ever get steamed at that ‘old fart’ doing 30 in the 50 lane and wish laws would keep them off of the road? Bigotry.

That one of you who know that the AOL addresses of the new comers are from Vero and Vero is in Indian River County, which indicates to you that I have friends here standing up for me – so what? Besides that, if you know Vero and spent some time in the hospital within the last several years, I probably worked on you. If you have been here longer, and needed mental help, I probably was one of the counselors.
To the mouth of the South who did gripe because of my business practices, I did get fired for trying to stop violations of labor laws. I was also prevented, illegally, from getting back into that profession because I had a reputation as a whistle blower. Later, in another job, rising to boss again, I tried to correct discriminatory practices and was warned not to bother. Then I lost my position and was reduced in rank. When it comes to major cash making, companies care little about the individual.
So, you who gripe about my morals being low because I just accept the corrupt, bite my ass. You friggin’ do it, 'kay? After loosing a couple of good paying jobs, having to change careers and discovering that bill collectors are NOT sympathetic over reasons why you can’t pay bills, I shut up. I dunno about you, but after spending a time living off of rice, cheap cans of peas and cheap bulk margarine along with crappy instant broth, I decided I like making money.
One eats better. The power actually stays on.

We all have our prejudices, the difference between most of us and Mark is that we (I assume) would not be proud of our bigotry - we’d back away and try to retract some of it, when confronted with it. We’d have enough social awareness to know that it was bad.
(Did I ever say I was not aware? I stated a simple fact, neither expressing fondness nor disgust at my bigotry’s, just admitting to them. So, what is your gripe or are you griping because you fail to admit to yours?)
The actual thing is that I have admitted to and expressed my dislike for fat people – not hate. There is a difference. If I hated them, I would not have fat friends. Since I did that, I gave you a target to attack and spew forth your pent up venom and hatred towards people of similar ilk who have probably picked on you for ages. This indicated that you are bigoted towards me, because my beliefs do not match yours. Many of you are the same type of bigot that I am, only in different areas, and you don’t act on those bigotry’s either, knowing that you should not. Just as I. Yet, for you, it is acceptable and ‘holy’ but for me, it is damnable and something to deride me about.

First of all, you’ve already admitted that you act on it, not just on a personal level, but on a professional level, acting illegally. Secondly, you act on it every time you open your mouth and discuss “fat folks” with anyone. Both of these have social implications.
And finally, although it’s not germane to the topic, please watch some Sesame Street or some other educational show where the proper formation of plurals is discussed. You don’t want to give those of us who are bigoted against “stupid folk” any more ammunition than you have to.

I can’t speak for everyone else here, but:
I like gays, as long as they’re nice (which, btw, is my criteria for liking just about anyone). I am straight, but considered volunteering for Stonewall simply because I think the world would benefit from a bit more tolerance.
I am an atheist, but I believe that religion has a perfectly good and acceptable place in the world, and that people should practice their beliefs any way they see fit, as long as they try not to use their beliefs to espouse bigotry.
Don’t think I’ve ever dealt with a “towel head” at the local UDF. But they do jack up the prices there. Damn those rich white CEOs!
I would love to sleep with an available black man, and have found several attractive. Problem is, I’m looking for more than just sex, and generally I don’t have many common interests with black men. While I have several black male friends, we’ve agreed that the relationship would not benefit if we tried to take it to the next level. If that’s bigotry, then I guess I’m bigoted against all men that don’t fit a certain set of somewhat culturally-based standards. But I doubt that there’s such a thing as bigotry against people who don’t like Foo Fighters or Sharon Olds.
I don’t have a preference for hair color that would go so far as to keep me from finding a man attractive. While I generally like darker-haired men, I’ll accept just about anything. I find personality more attractive than “looks,” anyway.
I don’t drive, but I LOVE old people. My first job was in a “home,” waiting tables. I gained a great deal of respect for the elderly during that summer.
So I guess I’m not a bigot. Keep trying to justify your own bigotry by trying to attack us, though. I think that’s called “ad hominem.”

It seems to me that some posters only want to respond to the nasty parts of the posts. Not the questions, not statements. I’ve pulled back and really am trying to have a rational discussion. Your jumping in with further put downs just takes this back into a mud flinging contest. But I think that’s what you would like it to be. It’s no fun watching people discuss an issue unless they are fling hate all over.
I think I’ve made my points in a polite, honest and tolerant manner. When I posted out of anger I apologized and tried to bring this back on line.
Oh, and Opal, my line of “Fuck your post of a picture” wasn’t meant to offend you. Just that even without a picture, I’ve read enough of your posts to know that I would like you, regardless of your looks. Just wanted to clear that up. When I re-read it I thought it sounded really rude.
As for all of us being bigots: I may not like certain things about people but I work very hard on tolerating those differences. I would never call anyone a racist name. Ever. I would never discriminate against someone for any reason. I may not like everything about people but I do my very best to just see it as a difference between us and then find something we have in common. I recognize what I don’t like but I also go out of my way to find something I do like.
Flora– not everyone is screaming. And obviously, this is an issue worth discussing. If you don’t care to join in but just want to put us down than I would respectfully ask you not to post. There are threads out here I find silly or stupid too. I just don’t post. Lest this come off as rude to I’m just trying to get everyone to calm down a little and discuss this.
I think most of us would agree that we would not yell rude things at ANYONE. And that bashing someone just for their weight is inappropriate.

The anal-retentive part of me just has to point out - it’s “bigotries” not “bigotry’s”. That pesky apostrophe has a purpose - but it is not used to pluralize a word. (I hasten to add that my spelling and grammar are less than flawless, but the inappropriate use of apostrophes bugs the hell outta me!) So, I guess I am an apostrophe bigot. I can deal with that. 
As far as the rest of this bullshit - I freely admit that everyone has bigotry. No news flash there. I am not trying to say that I don’t have it. The big difference is that I don’t cherish it and savor it, like you do.
And, I don’t defend it the way you do, or act as if because “everyone does it” it is socially OK. I do agree, however, that if one can contain their bigotry internally, and not impact anyone else with it, it really is no one else’s business. However, most of us here would agree that you are NOT containing your bigotry internally - you are letting it spill out onto your hiring policies, and onto this board.
