All you gotta do is decide what kind of person you are, and consider a little humility.
People who have done this are beyond possible punishment, there crimes are that great.
To torture them as “punishment” or retribution is to put a small price indeed upon the lives lost and the suffering caused.
You can’t pay these people back. You can’t exact retribution. Their capacity for suffering is tiny compared to the pain they’ve caused and the books can never be balanced.
Yes, if and when we catch them they should be executed. A rabid dog must be destroyed, so you do it, but it brings no pleasure, offers no retribution.

Ok, I’ll bite here. I submit that even a death by torture would not be seen as so horrible a thing, since they see what they have done to advance their sadly misguided “cause”. So then what?
First, show that we are not the foul animals that they are, deny them that victory. Let them sit in prison for an eternity, but do not give them the victory of [sub]what they see as[/sub] a martyr’s death.
Crush their dream. Make sure that America and other things which they loath remain powerful. Make them watch. Let them see that what they have done was a waste of time. This might require America to genuinely reach out and embrace right thinking Muslims as friends instead of feared strangers. Not sure that we could pull it off, but it may be possible. Should have started this one before.
