Well, it’s Labor Day. And Labor day is always on a Monday, just like our MMP. Which got me to thinking… How did the MMP get started, anyway? Who started it? When? Who started the nickname thing? What do some of the acronyms and “Mumpspeaks” mean? (Swampy, I’m looking at you) So in honor of Labor Day, and to answer the burning questions of some of us newbs, I’d like to make this a FAQ and MMP history. Sorry if this has been done before. I couldn’t do a search for it. Anyway, Happy Labor Day, All!

Ooh, nice topic, Pearl.
Who started it? Rue DeDay, AKA Unca Rue, who was a stay-at-home dad for a while, got into the habit of starting threads on Monday. He’d generally start with some anecdote, such as this one and then meander off wherever it took him. At some point, he went back to work and didn’t have time to post any more and we started taking turns and including MMP in the title so that people could find it. I think FCM and swampy have been posting in the MMP since the beginning. Oh, and here’s an homage to **Rue **from an MMP a few years back.
I should be asleep by now, but am curiously awake. Probably because I fell asleep for a bit earlier while watching a movie.

Wood, you get an A-. The only points you lost were in misspelling Taters’ name.
The MMP has become a clearing house for things too mundane for their own thread. Some things have grown into traditions, others into ‘in jokes’.
The nicknames started because a few of the original (2nd Gen, c. 2007) Mumpers (and where have they been lately, anyway) had very long screen names. Also, as we came to know each other, the nicknames became terms of endearment. Some, like Noone Special (who better get his butt back in here if he knows what’s good for him), have a few.
The N.O._. thing took on a life of its own once the nicknames took hold, as some nicknames sounded like food or everyday objects.
‘Firday’ (as in T.G.I.Firday and its kin) started from a poster who came in late on a Thursday after a night at the pub with friends, and was thankful she had no classes the next day. Most of ‘mumpspeak’ started that way, from someone’s durknen psot, which eventually became ogilbatroy.
Keep asking questions, n00bs, and we will answer them. Then you’ll know and you’ll have to stay. <insert evil laugh here>

Afternoon, mumpers! Great OP, Pearl - looks like a lot of your questions have already been answered so you already know all there is to know, apart from the fact that Swampy is obsessed with the amount of TP we have in our homes and probably despairs of me because I shop for more when I’m down to the last roll.
I’m at irk and irked, been busy all morning and now I have to go over to the other building to collect a load of stationery so I can finish stuffing envelopes. At least I should be able to go over there in time for tea break!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Been up and caffienated and fightin’ with Mediacom, my rotten, awful internet/phone/teevee provider. We had a two second power glitch last night and natch this causes all that to go haywire. :rolleyes: After restartin’ my modem several times, it’s workin’ (or given the level of aggravation, irkin’) for now. Anywho, 'tis seventy-five degrees Amurrkin out with a predicted high of gasp 83! There’ll be an iceberg in my cee-mint pond by day’s end! 
Pearl great OP! Most of the info on how it got started, why the nicks etc seem to have been answered. If there’s an acronym, nickname, whatever that doesn’t make sense [del]that’s because we rarely make sense[/del] feel free to ask. We don’t bite unlessen ya wants us to bite.
We have a task to complete today. We bein’ OYKW and me. We are goin’ to Verizon to look at phones and switchin’ over to Verizon. OYKW pointed out to me a fact that he had overlooked, bein’, his company gets a twenty percent discount with Verizon. I can’t believe he never mentioned this before! I mean, he’s every bit as cheap as I am even!
I shall now go roust him outta bed. I do this by fryin’ bacon (fully clothed thankyouverymuch). Gets him every time!

Happy Labor Day All. I’m gonna make some root beer baked beans today. Aarti from the food network made them a couple days ago on her show and they looked and sounded so good.
Sure sorry I wasn’t around to read Rue. The single post I just read is delightful.
As for toilet paper, I start to twitch if I have fewer than 20 rolls in the house. The thought of waiting to shop for more until I’m down to the last roll is making me feel faint. I think I might need to go lie down. 
Welcome, Surprise!! Someone with a cleverer nickname for you will be along shortly. I have a bunch of MMP links that I saved at some point when I was procrastinating about something. I’m awake and should find some caffeine. I’ll be going to an Arts Festival today. It’s a long-time tradition for me since I moved to Columbus on a Labor Day weekend and my first roommate took me to it on my first Labor Day. It’s gotten better and better over the years. Really good artists, hardly any junk and, this year, greatly improved food. (Several excellent food trucks/food carts will be there.) Now I have to decide what time I’ll go. I really like going as early as possible because parking is impossible otherwise. I guess if I get there just before 10 I’ll still be OK because it will take an hour to walk around and 11 won’t be too early to start thinking about food. Right?

Today shall be a day of slacking. I have busted butt for two days, and I ain’t gonna do that today. So there! I will marinate some steaks, and grill them for dinner. And there is one load of laundry in the dryer. :rolleyes:
Yesterday was a distribution day for my charity. We gave out 250 men’s kits, 50 women’s kits, as well as 22 kid kits, 175 bottles of cold water, 100 bottles of mosquito repellant, and 100 cold oranges. I roped Mr Rebo into helping this time, because he has a truck. My friend who usually goes with me (and has a truck) couldn’t make it this time. It was awesome! I love seeing the children’s faces when they get their kits with snacks and juice, and crayons and coloring books.
Ok - back to surfing. I might go try to scroungs something for breakfast. Maybe cereal?

I am really enjoying this holiday Monday. Every holiday in the last 18 months since I came back to the US I ended up on a plane for work travel. So I am still in my jammies. I am however going to run out in a bit and return the Redbox DVD’s and by a bottle of Dr Pepper as we are having Dr Pepper marinaded flank steak for supper. mr ems has gone to hit some golf balls at the driving range so when I am out I may take myself out for brekkie at the local diner. It is a holiday after all

Yesterday, we got just about all of the woodworking tools and equipment out of the garage. Today, I’m going to clean the garage the best I can. I gotta say, it’s great being able to open my car door all the way when I park. No more worries about hitting the tool box or the sander, so yay!! I’ve also got to do some laundry - probably only 2 loads today - gotta save some fun for the rest of the week! 
And my class starts tomorrow, so I need to gather my ceramics tools and miscellany. I’m very excited about getting my hands back into clay.

the ‘d’ could also stand for ‘damned’; it’s all in the context.
There are other traditions: n00bs are expected to lavish chocolate upon FCM & beervrages upon swampy, catdude, and bobbio; there’s also a goat and a squid sitting patiently somewhere on the 3rd floor waiting for, …, well, just waiting.
“dh” is more of a generic message board acronym, I think. Not specifically MMPish. I don’t think many people use it in here.

Drunken poster is HazelNutCoffee, who is mostly AWOL in the MMP since moving back to Korea. I still see her elsewhere on the SDMB and Facebook.

One of my first experiences posting in the MMP was calling **FairyChatMom, **"FairlyChattyMom". Fortunately, she took it with grace and humor.
I’ve been here ever since. It’s a nice, homey place that allows you to kick off your shoes and relax.
Whew! Canoeing yesterday, bike riding today. My hiney is sore from the canoe bench, and will be even more sore from the bike today. I wonder if I’ll be able to walk tomorrow, much less sit!
