Invisible Idiots

Me too. Spider is awesome. I’m rereading Callahan’s Lady as we speak.

OK, I know I promised, but Q.E.D’s feeling neglected, so…

Sweep, Fast Food Joints:

  • often Burt’s co-star, contained, negatives; fuel dirts, vocalization of relief
    Dom, in, no’s; ? , ah
Domino’s Pizza (What’s up with “fuel dirts”?)

  • Stone’s member, godfather, automaker nickname
    Mick, don, Olds
    McDonald’s

  • it’s cold!, onogrowl; checkers coup
    Brrr, grrr; king
    Burger King

  • question of time, poor grades
    when, d’s
    Wendy’s

  • UK buh bye, with; trumpet part
    ta, co-; bell
    Taco Bell

  • desire, fold in, door-opener; burnt out; babe, food container
    ? , tuck, key; fried; chick, ?
I presume this is Kentucky Fried Chicken, but I don’t get the first and last syllables.

Just two, but hopefully they’ll be cryptic enough to hold you lot for a while:

white lily, pilot Solo’s; gullets; bind, tasty interjection; Western watering hole

long-lasting pungent herb; labor, makes mistakes; mix, yuck!, windless place; Egyptian soul, Quiet!

Good job, Davebear! You got them all!

I live in West Central Florida, “Plant City” to be exact. It’s 30 miles east of Tampa, and about 50 miles west of Walt Disney World.

Balance:

1)calla, Han’s; ? ; tie, yum; saloon

Callahan’s Cross-Time Saloon

2)Thyme; travail, errs; stir, ick, lee; ka,shh

Time Travellers Strictly Cash

Excellent books, btw, highly recommended reading for all Dopers!

Oh maaaaan! Bunny got 'em before I even got out of bed. But yes, those were both excellent books. It wouldn’t surprise me if Spider were a Doper.

Balance, fuel dirt is “peat”, desire is “ken”, and food container is “can”

Here’s another set with a theme:

  • even the score, thrash thoroughly, fish prefix
  • British cans, tag term, chemical suffix, affirmative
  • Conjunction, a Perlman; something to slam, first word clue redux
  • SDMB big shot, pitcher place; effervese, east central German city, metaphorically in winter

Wow. Those are hard… for me, at least.

Okay, I’ll post another one. You’ve seen it a lot on the news.

opposite of con, people who take hard quizzes; recieve; an element of tempo; not down; enclosed; city of Al Capone; connector in a sentence; home of the iris; concentrate; ? ; sound made when seeing something cute, completely packed; number after 3; to bring toward you, to gently pull something, opposite of lady.

Well, then— have at it!

Protesters get(?) tie up in Chicago and I think how awful for (?)

Having a spot of trouble with that last bit…

Hey, hey, hey!! You’re damn close!

Change ‘tie’ to ‘beat’, and you’re even closer!

**[hijack]**Apologies for the hijack, but I just have to mention this, since I’ve finally found people who might actually appreciate it. When I was in Key West on vacation, a few years ago, I was walking up Duval St. one evening, when I saw a stunningly beautiful oriental woman approaching from the opposite direction. She was wearing a shirt that had the words “Mei Ling, 1 Duval St (probably not the actual address), Key West, FL” printed on it. (And, a pair of red satin shorts that showcased a spectacular! pair of legs.)

It wasn’t until I was about four steps past her that I got the joke. Then I expoded with a “Ha!”, and turned to look back at the lady, with a big grin on my face. (My girlfriend didn’t appreciate this, as she hadn’t gotten the joke, and thought I was just checking out the rear view.) The lady apparently heard me, and turned to give me a smile. It was a couple years later that she appeared in one of the Callahan books, as Doc’s paramour. Lucky bastard. I don’t know if Doc actually exists, but Mei Ling certainly does, and Spider didn’t/couldn’t do her justice. [/hijack]

We now return you to your regularly scheduled game.

Hmmm… I was hoping your post would be the answer to my puzzle, but apparently not. Oh, well! I’m in a good mood! Hijack reading is always fun.

I’m still trying get that last word. Did you type a comma instead of a semicolon, or am I just thick today? :smack:

No, you’re not thick, I’m just no good at this. Okay, here is what I was thinking:

to bring towards you: pull.
to gently pull something: ease.
opposite of lady: men.

Pull Ease Men.

Policemen. (Although as I think about it, I should have written “opposite of ladies” [using plural] because just the one would have been “man,” and that’s not what I meant.) :smack:

Sorry. I don’t know the news story you’re referring to, so I can’t even guess. It looks like the last bit is “…awful for…” ?, tug, man (or tramp? or gentleman?). But, I can’t make anything sensible out of that. And, I have no idea on the “bring toward you” clue.

I guess Q.E.D. didn’t appreciate the highjack story, either. Sorry, dude.

No, no. That was VERY good. I’d say you were were bad at this if your puzzles were easy to solve.

:smack: Preview, preview, preview!

I still wasn’t close. I was thinking “pull” couldn’t be “pull”, because you’d used it in the previous clue.

err…next clue. :sigh:

No way, Dave! That was an awesome story. Mei Ling is da bomb! Man, I sure wish I knew where Callahan’s Place was…

Here’s an appropriate one.

not night, yogi; exists; fifth of AD; donkey; chapeau

Whoa— simulposting like crazy, then, are we?

Thanks, Q.E.D for the compliment! This is fun, you know.

Unfortunately I have no idea what the hijack thing is even about (never even heard of the subject) so I’ll stay out of that one…
