Heading into our second night without power here, along with about 20,000 of our neighbors in this county. Not complaining, though, no matter how desperately I would love to have a shower. My family is safe, my home is intact, and the weather is beautiful.
Damage reports are still coming in - one cousin and an old friend had trees on their homes, lots of vehicles smashed by trees and debris, power lines down all around us, and far worse. Two deaths confirmed in my county, including the manager of the propane service we use, and a rupture and explosion of a gas line in the county northwest of us. As travel to the barrier islands reopens, I expect to hear more casualties. Matthew was a lot worse than most folks around here ever expected.
But…
We managed to stage a pretty nice wedding yesterday. Not elegant, perhaps, but friends and family pulled together to feed us all, a bridesmaid’s husband brought in a big generator so we’d have lights and running water, preacher made the trek safely, and the bride and groom are married. A good time was had by all (except maybe the bride’s mother, who seems constitutionally unable to enjoy herself, and spent the evening critiquing the best efforts we all made. And maybe the videographer, who spent the evening flirting madly with Girl 2.0, until I found a discreet way to point out that a. She’s 15 years old. And b. He’s at an isolated pond house, surrounded by The Girl’s redneck step dad, granddad, uncle, and a dozen of her honorary uncles who are very protective of “our” little girl. I felt sorry for the poor fellow, just a little bit, but he’s probably 30 - inappropriate!)
Anyway, not much else to do, so the teenagers and I will probably go volunteer at the food bank again tomorrow. The Boy had power and water as of noon, so I might impose and go get a shower before I go to the soup kitchen, or maybe we’ll get power back tonight. Fingers crossed.
