Lazy, Drunken MMP [merged threads, edited title]

Keep an eye on that plant, flutter, and make sure it is really a hollyhock and not something else. We had a velvet leaf spring up in our garden this summer, which is in the same mallow family as the hollyhocks. It has similar leaves and buds as the plant you posted. Yours may very well be a hollyhock, but since I just had this issue this summer, I thought I’d post a warning.

I do like swimming so a little bit of summer is good. And fresh veggies. But I hate hot overnight temperatures so I’m really really looking forward to fall with its crisp nigh air. And I like the winter holidays and then (if it ever snows) the winter sports - snowshoeing and x-country skiing for me - so I like winter. And spring is always so optimistic after the darkness and cold of winter. So I like all of the seasons. Probably summer least. But it’s still ok for a few weeks.

My first real summer job was a dishwasher and then a short-order cook at Howe Caverns. It was actually a pretty good job. Because it’s a tourist attraction that sees most of its visitors during the summer, most of its workers are seasonal employees and therefore mostly high school and college students. So a fun atmosphere. And I really liked the fast-paced kitchen environment.

My desk:

  • Two pictures of KT and me in NYC a few years ago, including one of us on the Brooklyn Bridge.
  • Pictures of our honeymoon
  • A philodendron. Boy, do they like office light. Mine’s very happy and a couple coworkers have them as well, and they’re all thriving.
  • A kitty calendar. 'Cause a little cuteness never hurts.
  • Various swag from conventions that I went to with my old job.
  • A sample of bullet-proof glass with a bullet in it. My ex-bf’s father used to work for a company that makes (and tests) it, and they always had samples lying around their house and said I could have one. It’s pretty cool. And most people don’t know what it is.

The big excitement at our house over the weekend was that our cat - who used to pal around with our hamster, showing no predatory instincts - caught and killed her first mouse ever! (Although we like small animals and do have two gerbils, mice are pests. This mouse has been tormenting the cat since early spring when she caught and released it.) She was out on the patio while I was getting breakfast, and I heard her come running up the stairs. I turned around to see her, and there she was with the mouse in her mouth! I panicked a little bit because I assumed it was still alive and that she was going to let it go in the house. I ran upstairs and woke up KT who came running back downstairs with me. But fortunately, the cat had done her job, and the mouse was dead. No chasing the mouse around in the house. Whew! Go kitty!

you mean like this?

it’s noon (N.O.N.) here on the Guylandt - I think now I will get my tuchus to the doctor

Blurf.

Figures that the one weekend I decide to go visit Mumsy Dearest, it turns out to be the first (and possibly only) weekend of hot, muggy, sticky, nasty weather all freakin’ summer. I love Mumsy to bits, but her lack of A/C? Not so pleasant.

(See, The Boy is a snuggler and radiates ludicrous quantities of heat… so no A/C means I spend all night scooting around the mattress trying to avoid gross, sticky, hot snuggles… URK)

We survived, though. Brought home the compulsory Montreal-style bagels - one dozen each of white (sesame) and black (poppyseed), minus one or two that were scarfed down immediately while still warm from the oven, as per tradition. Also found some bottles of Ephemere Cassis, which I’m rather excited about since I’m a huge fan of the apple flavour already.

Speaking of beer… it’s gonna be a hell of a week for me, so I’ll probably be scarce. I’m expecting most of my time to be taken up by work, with brief interludes of drinking as a coping mechanism. :stuck_out_tongue:

I hate summer. It’s supposed to cool off in a few days. I still hate it. I’m hiding inside as much as possible.

Got the grocery shopping done, looked at an appalling visa bill, and when Nat conks I’m napping and then cleaning/packing/organizing. Whee!

I love summer, it can’t get hot enough for me. In my next life I’m coming back as a pelican. Hot weather, the ocean, and seafood all day long.

On my desk, in sort of a rotational order: The in-box, which is in reality the 'holding box, people wanting to leave me stuff just drop it in my desk randomly. Stapler, business card holder, letter opener, little cup thing full of paper clips, scotch tape dispenser, plastic star shaped slinky thingee, baseball squeezy stress ball, post it dispenser, business card binder, 27 inch HP monitor, phone, big steel cup for pencils and pens, stack of stationary note pads, and pile of folders.
PS: I hate August, it’s when school starts and all I have to do is work, piss people off and not sleep enough.

I like early summer. My fave time of the year is late March to about the 2ns week of July, when things are green and growing.

My least favorite is the dead of winber, or any time [del]Ellie Mae[/del] VWife brings home a new critter.

Da cave is defilthyfied. I have some beef stew simmerin’ that shall be dindin for a couple of nights this week. Tonight is men’s night at the church so we’re goin’ for that. Thus I have steaks marinatin’. In a while Ima go on over to the church, make the sallit and peel and dice N.O.T. for garlic smashed N.O.T. cause I volunteered this time and I’m all nice like that dammit.

On my wAy home from the doc- not pneumonia but very nearly bronchitis. I am waiting for my Zpak as I type.

I’m home. It got up to almost 90° at the office, so I took 1/2 a day off. Blergh! Too frickin’ hot!

Home early. First on 2?

ETA: Yes, indeedy. Wooooot!!!

Merged MMPs are hilarious AND oddly coherent. I was the other merge request because I was thinking pretty much what twicks wrote in her merger post.

I’ll post this before my time runs out and then come back and actually contribute.

Who needs a coherent MMP anyway?

10 hours and 10 minutes more of work total (today and tomorrow) until my vacation. It’s killing me!

Home. Daughter made supper tonight - cheeseburgers and beans. Yum. The dishwasher is washing dishes. The damned van is in the shop for $800 in repairs - rear wheel bearings and something.

**FCD **and I had a long conversation about the van. Come Nov, we’ll have had it 13 years. It’s just about to 220K miles. Right now. SIL drives it daily. Apart from that, we need it to haul trash to the convenience center, buying big stuff, or going to the dump - it’s the only vehicle that’ll drag a trailer. I hate putting money into it, but for the moment, I think it’s the best alternative. We’ve got 2 car loans and I don’t want three, nor do I want the rise in insurance that will accompany a new vehicle.

So, we’re hoping this repair will get us thru another year. We looked into Cash for Clunkers, but I *CANNOT *bring myself to buy a brand new vehicle and hand the keys over to SIL. I don’t want to drive a truck daily, nor does FCD. And frankly, it seems silly to buy a brand new truck for dump runs and Lowe’s shopping sprees. Instead, we’ll make a concerted effort to pay our cars off (I figure we can get rid of both loans by May) then throw those payments in savings against getting a decent used truck. We’ve offered to give the van to the kids provided they take over the insurance and the maintenance costs. That way, they’ll have something to trade in when they get SIL a real vehicle. If they opt out, well, we’ll just trade it in or get rid of it when we get the truck.

Are you bored yet?

Next phase of the ongoing project at work will last till Sep 10. We’ve been told we’re not to work overtime, but there *might *be a chance of being called in on a weekend, maybe, possibly, if necessary… So I’m keeping my calendar clear, just in case.

Other than that, just another boring Monday. I love the merged MMP! I guess we now know what happens when no one volunteers! **swampy **gets drunk! I still think one of the less frequent starters should volunteer for next week. C’mon you slackers! Step up!!

That’s all I got.

You can hang in there, snowbunny! Have a great time.

Here’sa nice article on hollyhocks, Flutter. And another. And here are lots of pictures.

I’m from the “ignore them and maybe they’ll go away” school of thought when it comes to most bugs. I agree that cleaning things up will probably reduce the population.

As for the raspberries… Are you sure they’re raspberries? I thought they were less invasive. Blackberries act like you’re describing. I dig them up when they sprout where I don’t want them. Have to say I haven’t been very successful. I’ve been told that RoundUp (or equivalent) is really the only cure, but I’m averse to poisonous stuff, even if it does dissipate eventually.

And you know who would really know answers? twickster.

It will come as a great surprise to those of you who know me that my favorite time of year is spring. Also summer. But I also like fall. And winter. As long as temperatures and weather don’t get too extreme, I like 'em all, for different reasons.

Spring because there’s all this pretty bloomy stuff out there and I can decide what I’m going to plant and how I want my garden to look and and and…

Summer because I can enjoy all the pretty bloomy and leafy stuff that I planted. And because there are tomatoes and corn and other yummy summer veggies.

Fall because, well, there’s other pretty bloomy stuff, plus also there are those nice leaves.

Winter because, if you’re creative, there’s still pretty bloomy stuff that’s either dry or about to bloom (yay for hellebores!).

My desk. Well, yes. Currently I’ve got the laptop either on or near one of those nice bed trays that I scored at a White Elephant exchange my friend hosted. Also there’s a pen and an index card.

The actual desk in the home office is scary and needs to be decluttered (as does the whole office, really). At work, I’ve managed to keep my desk fairly clear. Right now it has 2 calendars. A pretty German garden calendar that Faraway Best Friend gave me for 2008. I keep it for the pictures. Also, a Monet engagement calendar that I also use for pictures. And an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper that my employer gave me with all 12 months, paydays and holidays on it (and also, our logo - wooooot!). That’s the one I refer to most frequently. Somewhere I have a frame that I was going to put it in to protect it from the coffee or tea that I would inevitably spill on it. Spill day was last week. But it was minor and, well, I don’t have time to figure out if the calendar is somewhere that I can conveniently print it from. I supposed there’s always our friends at time & date (or is it date & time?).

Somewhere in there I took a break and made chocolate mousse (the Dr. Oetker kind). That would be tonight’s and tomorrow’s and maybe Wednesday’s dessert. I’m thinking sauteed spinach and a couple of red-skinned potatoes, zapped, will be dinner tonight. And maybe a bit of ham.

Guess I should go figure that out.

Off to knit a bit then find din-din, then back to work on that fun document I’m still writing. :dubious: :smack:

Oh, and I agree with FCM: a newbie should start us off next week!!!

(Newbie! Newbie! Newbie!) (Chant it with me!)

Yes, I’m in a weird mood. Why do you ask?

Back later.

Sweet blessed A/C, you’re the best use of $2000 EVAR. swoooooon

The office is in an older building, which is plagued by all sorts of temperature control issues. Two summers ago, it was frigid temperatures on the ground floor (and I do mean frigid… we were using space heaters to de-numb our fingers and toes)… and now I seem to have traded it in for sweltering heat on the 6th floor.

Not sure which is worse. Glad home is a reasonable temp, though.

Time to dig up some dinner. Lunch was the frantic-dash-to-McD’s-between-tasks special, so something healthy is in order.

Martini time! I made it through another day. Not hungover either.

On my desk:
My PC and peripherals, a Dogbert pencil holder, a bust of Verdi(From Dollar Tree), a magic 8-ball(My sources say no), a non functional $20 Wal-Mart PDA, a springing nun from Archie McPhee’s, a figure of Ray Whitney, a figure of Eric Staal, a Mountain Dew can featuring Cam Ward, 3 reams of assorted paper, a microscope, 2 old printer cartridges, 8 Jimmy Buffett cassettes, the phone, the noise meter, an LP of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, and one half consumed gin martini.

BBBobbi, TVCTPMO is back in spades. Sorry.

rosie, hope you feel better quick.

Wow, page two already!

Well, the first day back at work was busy as expected. However, I heard one piece of good news. I get to move to my own office, with a door and everything! Woot!

My boss approved my leave request, so it looks like I’m off to Hawaii on the 31st of October! Woohoo!

I kind of skimmed because I’m getting ready to dash off to a movie.

Hugs, smooches and gropes to all!

I read and now don’t remember a thing. Am back from work and HP Exhibit at the museum. It was worth it, but not a WOW!
Daughte’s Mini-Cooper has taken to overheating so they’re off to the dealership (which is not near us). I hope they get it fixed before her road trip this weekend. She’s going to visit friends in Iowa City.
I just had a slice of lemon meringue pie for dinner. It was very good. Tis a sauna and a shower outside. Ugh, yuck and blech. I HATE summer!

it’s so humid here - you could turn raisins back into grapes

I so wish I had a walk-in fridge I could stand in for a few minutes
