Lost 1.14: "Special"

After watching Locke’s face while he and Michael were trying to rescue Walt, I’m convinced that the polar bears are a manifestation of something, and that something in another form is the TCM.

Locke’s reaction when he saw the PB was, “Oh, it’s you. I’ll le them have their trial by fire and stay out of the way.”

I don’t care for a rerun of Sayid’s story, I want 1.15!!!

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. These threads move way too fast.

I still think you’re reading too much into that bit though, and that Locke meant that the dog would come back.

We’ll see.

So why is next week a repeat?

Also, does Michael still have the knife? I thought it was stuck in the polar bear; I don’t remember seeing it after the bear ran off.

My personal theory is that Vincent and the polar-bears are the same being.
(Yes, in spite of one being shot! Look at the evidence - the dog runs off, and a polar bear show up! Correlation equals causation!)

:dubious:
:smack:

In the past few episodes, Locke has seemed a lot more ambigously sinister than this time. He was clearly up to something, playing people against each other, manipulating, and out-and-out lying. This episode, his motives seemed pretty simple and sincere. I now beleive that he was never trying to get between Michael and Walt, just that he did sense something special in Walt that Michael hadn’t seen yet (although Brian did kind of warn him).

Also, we now know that Walt’s last name is Porter, but we don’t know Michael’s last name (I think).

What’s TCM?

Do young, seemingly healthy people suddenly drop dead from “blood disorders” or is that a term doctors invent when there are no other explanations? Since a lot of people are suspicious that Walt has some kind of powers (including the boy’s stepfather), there may be some connection with the mom’s death.

So that they can ration it out and use The Good Stuff in May, during sweeps. Can you imagine trying to write a show that is engaging and high-quality and true to your original vision, and cater to the Mammon-worshipping execs who are backing your show?

I think mid-season re-runs are the compromise.

I don’t think the dog is coming back. Walt said that the dog was his step-dad’s, not his. The last time Vince disappeared was when Walt and Michael were bonding a little. The dog came back and the relationship became strained. Now they are connecting again. I have a feeling the dog symbolises Walt’s ties to his step-dad. As long as Walt and Michael are getting along, Vincent will not reppear.

Tree Crashing Monster

And now it’s TRM - Tree Ravishing Monster.

Tree Crushing Monster.

Yes. Sniffs_Markers’s brother died of a “blood disorder” that still remains a mystery two years later. Autopsy was inconclusive. Left behind a wife and children.

Lost?

Dunmanifestin?

Kate is hotter. Even though we know she’s devious and sneaky, she has a really natural look and genuine smile. Shannon just has a sneer.

I like how Shannon tried to use her “charms” on Boone again, and she seemed bewildered that he didn’t fall for it this time, like he usually does.

I was actually thinking, “Claire?” just before she came out of the brush. I think Ethan and “the Others” wanted her just to get the baby – she had the baby, they kept it, and now they let her go.

WHY they want the baby is the mystery. You’d think they’d want Walt instead…

I agree with the possibility that you’re reading too much into this. Locke found Vincent before and let Michael be the one to return him to Walt. I gathered that what was being unspoken between them was that Locke was letting Michael know that he would find the dog again.
Yay! Claire. I couldn’t tell if she was still pregnant, it was dark and she was pretty much shot from the upper half of her body.
OMGWTFPB! I was diappointed in the polar bear. They can have such nice 'splosions on that show, you’d think a polar bear could look a little better. Did Walt conjur up the polar bear again?

Well, I wasn’t happy with him in the first encounter – where he chastized Michael for not treating Walt as an adult. He isn’t an adult. And Michael is his dad and guardian, and a better move by Locke would have been to get Michael’s approval before teaching Walt to play with knives.

BUT, Locke totally redeemed himself in my eyes when Walt went back to him – saying “he’s your father and you need to respect him and his wishes”. From that point on, I agree – the Great Hunter made all the right moves.

Locke is the most interesting and intriguing character to me. More! Quit it with the reruns dammit! We’ve only had three new ones since the holiday break! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…

I missed the reference to “the cult of knives”. Locke does seem to…attract, engage people, into whatever it is he’s sharing with the island. Has he given knives to all of his’disciples’? Is that it?
I think Michael was really selfless when he reassured Walt about Brian, taking the blame, as it were.
So, so far we have a toy airplane, black rock in Claire’s diary, polar bear in the comic book.
Claire seemed really not pregnant anymore.
Damn reruns… :frowning:

As deep as this show is turning out to be, I doubt that I’m reading to much into Locke’s words. Remember, this Island fulfills wishes and dreams somehow. And not always for the good of the wisher/dreamer. Or, at least, not the immediate good.

It’s a deep show, people. And Locke has been shown as the deepest character so far. What’s so far fetched about his putting double meaning into his words?

Michael’s last name is Lloyd, I think, based on the “you just don’t want to take my last name” discussion he had with his pregnant girlfriend in the Babies-R-Us store.

My take on the Locke character is that he adjusts his style to whatever the character he’s facing responds to best. With Charlie, he was authoritative, “Father Knows Best”, positive and upbeat. With Boone, I thought Locke was dismissive of Boone’s abilities, kept him in the dark, and treated him like a slow child, all of which served to make Boone try extra hard to win his approval. Now, with Michael, Locke was respectful, subordinate and almost servile (a little bit!) when Michael rushed to yell at him about Walt and then ask for his help to find him. It seems Locke can read people very well and tailor his approach for the best way to win friends and influence people.

Incidentally, look!ninjas, this post of yours is very good and exactly articulates my thoughts on Locke. Good work!

Please, the kid is* ten*. Reverse psychology works almost too well with kids that age.

Locke says: “You have to stop coming to me because your dad said so”

Walt thinks: Well, I’ll show him and just come here all the time!

Probably been kidnapped by Ethan, who is trying to crossbreed it with Claire’s kid.

I thought it was stuck in the bear, too. Although there are plenty of knives. Locke has them sprouting out of all his orifices, apparently. Yep, plenty of knives to go around…
On Claire: The shot was dark, so her bellyish region was obscured in shadow, and there wasn’t really a side shot, just the front. But she didn’t look pregnant any more.

Next week, Locke goes back to camp and explains that Claire came back in response to his dog whistle…
