Lost 1.14: "Special"

Are you saying you think Locke was trying to say this to get Walt to come see him more often? I don’t buy that.

And I didn’t say that Walt was going to respond to it by staying away. I simply said that I saw Locke handling things more appropriately by actually treating the kid like a kid – I think Locke’s intent was genuine – whether or not Walt would have obeyed or not.

Nope. That was Susan’s (Walt’s mom’s last name). She repeated the name “Walt” when Michael suggested it and then said “Walter Lloyd” out loud and Michael commented that she didn’t want to get married so the kid would have her last name. Inferring that Lloyd was her last name.

Yes, we’ve talked about it before, and although it hasn’t been explicitly mentioned on the show, it’s persisted.

I had mixed feelings about this. It was a noble, selfless thing to do, and yet, making yourself “The Bad Guy” is probably not the best way to start off a relationship with the son you barely knew.

I think you’re right – good way to put it! Locke definitely handled each situation differently, but with lots of insight into what would work on each character. Great point!

Sounded to me like her last name was Lloyd, from that discussion. Just rewound, and here’s the dialogue:

Her: Walt, huh?
Michael: I’d like to do that, you know. Name him after my dad.
Her: Walter… Walter Lloyd.
Michael: Lloyd?? Aaaahhh alright, that’s why you won’t marry me. It’s not that you think marriage is too prosaic. You just want him to have your last name.

It’s Michael Dawson. Brian Porter (the adoptive father) used Michael’s full name when he showed up at Michael’s door (to tell him about the wife’s death).

This is why I tape these things…

Hey, what if a sunburned penguin show up on the next new episode?

The producers / writers stated which comic book it is.
(flogs the hamsters trying to find the info)

I got it from here:

Brian

I’m still trying to tie Vince into being Vincent Van Gogh, but so far coming up dry. If walt’s name was vince, it would be a lot easier. :-/

Sorry for double post, but… what about Walt disney. (It’s ABC, I wouldn’t put it past them). He was a sort of visionary who created things that he thought were possible… It’s a stretch, but so far most of the names have meant something.

And it attacks Shannon, trying to steal her sunscreen.

Hmmm… Dawson…

Can’t find anything special in his name. Maybe this time, a cigar is just a cigar.

Unless we want to fixate on his first name.

You can find a summary of Walt’s comic book here.

and scans of it in english here:

Dammit dammit dammit.

I missed everything after Charlie found something exciting in Claire’s diary and went to read it to Jack and His Hotness… er… ahem… Sayid.

Can anyone recap?

Hmmm… Dawson… Dawson…
Dawson’s Creek… starring Katie Holmes…
who was “First Daughter”…
with Michael Keaton… (Hey, “Michael” is Michael’s first name, too!)
who was Batman…
also Batman was George Clooney, who…
was in Ocean’s Eleven…
with Julia Roberts…
who was one of the Flatliners… with…

[Peter Griffin]
Holy Crap!! Kevin Bacon is going to show up on the island!!

Was I the only one who, when Walt was being attacked by the bear, thought: “Son, just wish it into the cornfield…?”

I couldn’t tell if Claire was still pregnant either.

That scene with Charlie picking up the diary and putting it back down again repeatedly was the comic highlight of the evening.

Michael and Locke should call a truce.

I like the kid playing Walt.

js, I think they went to an ad or another scene when Charlie wanted to read a bit of the diary to the others. Locke helped Michael to rescue Walt and then they rescued Michael as well. The bear took a few slashes to the nose from a knife and ran off. Then Claire came back looking rather bedraggled; she approached Locke and Boone.

Boone is a disciple of Locke’s now, isn’t he?

I watched that scene several times (thank you TiVO) and it was pretty dark, but it appeared that she was no longer pregnant.

How long do we have to wait before we get a new episode? Does anyone know which episodes they’re planning on repeating until then?

Actually, there was a bit with the diary. Charlie read to the others an entry that Claire wrote about the “Black Rock” and how she can’t seem to get away from it (in her dreams, I think). Charlie remembers what Sayid said about the Black Rock from his time with Danielle, and they speculate that the Black Rock is what the map coordinates locate, and may be where Ethan took Claire . However, Jack reasons that they can’t do anything now because it’s nighttime, so the scene then cuts to the action with Locke/Walt/Michael. A few minutes later, lo and behold, Claire’s back!

Wow, what an interesting episode. The writers are doling out the facts very so slowly. What did we learn this time:

  • Walt is “special”, in that he can manifest things. Birds, polar bears.

  • Boone is not 100% under Locke’s spell.

  • The polar bear special effects were pretty weak. Is that because the bear isn’t real, or just a budget limitation of the show…?

  • The Banyan trees are a safe haven. No one has been attacked while they are in the protective girdle of the banyan vines.

  • I couldn’t see for sure, but I’ll bet dollars to donunts that Claire is no longer prego. Ethan (and anyone he’s working with) wants this baby for the same reason they wanted Alex. Maybe it’s as simply as wanting cord blood for a cure to whatever it is that Rousseau’s shipmates became “carriers” of.

It’s important to remember that there are already people on the island. Rousseau, Ethan, and “the others”. Our castaways are not the the origin of what is happening. They are players. Walt didn’t manifest this whole scenario.
