Lost 1.14: "Special"

Inappropriate laugh out loud moments:

  • Michael getting hit by the taxi

  • Hurley, “Dude, your kid’s gone” to Michael who was five feet away from Walt.
Was I the only person thinking “Vincent, bark twice if you’re in Milwaulkee!”

And I think that was probably very intentional on the part of the writers. Look how much we’re discussing it and going over all the possibilities.
“Was she still pregnant?”
“Yes!”
“No!”
“Maybe!”
What a great cliffhanger, especially since next week is a repeat. Claire’s back, but we don’t know exactly what shape she’s in.

Yes, they did.

Good job on the screen capture link!

Still, it’s a bit difficult to to tell definitely one way or the other(s).

If she does end being still pregnant, tho, it raises a new category of questions. So, I’m going to go with my gut feeling as I saw it. Maybe it was more an issue of body language, she didn’t act pregnant (in those 12 seconds).

That Green Lantern comic had quite a lot of space stuff in it, didn’t it? Also, a secret government project? So…, two of our original WAGs in one place. An X-Files type of mix? (You know, secret gov’ment plan with aliens)

Kate definitely hid in some banyans, then did Jack’s “count to five” trick. Charlie, if I recall, wasn’t actually with her at the time.

The show has really gotten on track. Why do they always schedule the BEST cliffhangers before going on hiatus? It got me worried about how harsh the season FINALE is going to be on us!

Several random thought:

  • My wife had a great theory (that is seemingly shared by others here): The dog died in the crash and Walt conjured him. His attachment to the dog is a symbol of his old life. That was why I really liked the theory that the Dog will come and go as his relationship with Michael fluctuates. (Was that Achren’s post?)

  • I guess we can drop any speculation that the comic book was just foreshadowing…

  • Walt’s conjuring (if it hold true) manifested itself PRE-ISLAND.

  • Walt’s mom was an evil bitch. Calling Michael selfish because he didn’t want to surrender his parental status. A LOT of people have STEP-fathers! Her death made me think- was she supposed to raise HER baby alone? I have a feeling Walt’s powers caused her death. It seemed TOO mysterious and came on quickly when Walt was being ignored (cue Glenn Close line!) Out on a limb WAG- Walt caused Locke’s paralysis! YEAH, I SAID IT!

  • Michael takes the fall- I like it a lot. I have no mixed feelings about it. Michael was being a dad. He cared more about Walt’s feelings than about the pereception Walt would have of him. Walt had just lost his mom. It is better for him to hate the new guy than to think he is unwanted by the man who raised him.

  • NoClueBoy- I agree 100% that the “find him” comment was a double entendre. It is very Lockeian!

  • look!ninjas- I agree with everything you said about Trusting Locke. I think NOT being able to trust him makes him a better character.

  • I’m getting tired of the cliche Sawyer scene. Something goes missing. Let’s ask Sawyer. He has it. (INSERT RANDOM WAY OF GETTING ITEM). At what point are the rest of the cast going to do something about him? I’d LOVE to see a big plotline next season revolve around his murder!

  • I dug the Boone/Shannon rift. It worked, I guess. Interestingly, she was showing depth in the scene with Jack and Sayid. But when Boone comes around, out comes Vapirella! I have a feeling they will clearly be on the opposite side of the rift we all see coming.

  • Did anyone else get the absolute creeps when the camera panned away from Locke and showed an evil looking Boone leaning against the tree? Gave me the creeps. I don’t notice directing in television much, but that forced me to give a silent applause. WEIRD!

  • I liked the Charlie comic scene. A little levity is fine. What WAS odd was the ease with which they took the news of her vision. No one was concerned that she had never HEARD of the black rock.

  • I laughed at Jack’s ‘we can’t do anything at night’ rationale. You didn’t seem to be doing much at daytime…

  • I wondered if Claire was still pregnant. I assumed not. But Harborwolf did make me think about the needle (and the bastardly writers not giving us any resolution). I now think the baby has been injected with some carrier gene!)

  • Incidentally, I thought a penguin was going to come out of the woods instead of Claire (I had earlier thought there was one swimming in the pond behind Charlie when he was reading the diary!)

On the subject of banyan trees.

Lots of stuff to work with there.

*In Hindu mythology, the tree is called Kalpavriksha, the tree that provides fulfillment of wishes and other material gains. *

This tree is also sacred to the Buddhists. After attaining enlightenment, the Buddha is believed to have sat under a banyan tree for seven days, absorbed in his newfound realisation.

Fun stuff…

I have to admit that I laughed out loud when I saw Shannon as part of the raft committee. What’s she going to do-- decorate it?

Didn’t the Crazy French Lady also say something about bears? Were those bears being manifested by Walt, or did they pre-date the plane crash?

I thought it was interesting that Walt called Brian by his first name, not “dad”, even though legally Brian was his father. It’s possible that Walt never called anyone “dad” (or even thought he had a dad) until the bear.

Although do we know for sure that Michael signed away his parental rights? I can’t remember that being confirmed.

I just got to watch the episode (my sons think their Wednesday night soccer games are important ; they have no sense of priority), and wanted to chime in on a couple of other comments.

Yep, me too. If I don’t read the Lost Questions thread, I actually forget some of the mysteries. Glad to see that the “Black Rock” hasn’t gone away.

That’s too weak a limb, dude, even for Lost.

Yep, she did. IIRC, she said something about “there is no monster”, but she did mention the bears. So…how can the polar bears be a manifestation of Walt’s if they predate the crash???

As soon as it became apparent that someone was going to emerge from the bushes, I *didn’t * think “Claire.” Instead, I thought, “Great; they’re going to end it right here and we won’t even know who/what it is for two more weeks.” At least they didn’t do that !!

Y’know, for some reason I find the Locke-worshipping Boone to be much more appealing than the Shannon-worshipping Boone. Hey, Locke really is Boone’s new boyfriend!!

Yes, when Brian goes to Michael to tell him that he needs to take Walt, Brian says he never really wanted to be a father it was just part of the deal to get Susan. Michael yells at him and says “but you adopted him!”. So we must believe that Susan’s guilt trip about doing what was best for Walt got Michael to sign over his parental rights after all. Although Michael never really gave up and did continue to send him cards and letters (which the mother never gave to Walt).

One would guess from what we saw that Michael really wanted to be a dad, heck he’d have willingly been a single dad if she had left the kid with him but then so many years went by before it actually happened that he really wasn’t prepared when it did happen and has no idea how to handle it.
Back to the black rock, if it is some huge rock with possible magnetic properties wouldn’t it throw off a compass? Have any of the extra-geeky fans that like maps and geology and all that stuff been plotting the direction of the black rock?

I feel the same way–of course, I just like looking at Boone, to be completely truthful.

The latest on TV Tome regarding upcoming episodes …

February 9–“Homecoming”, which is Charlie-centric.
February 16–“Outlaws”, Sawyer–maybe we’ll find out what he did to get himself in trouble in Australia.
February 23–"…In Translation", Jin–what are the odds he speaks English, too?
March 1–“Numbers”, Hurley!!! This is the one I’m really looking forward to.

Here’s a WAG: What if the black rock is the covered remains of a spaceship? Or perhaps a huge nickel-iron meteor that would throw off compasses and that might have carried some sort of alien infection to Earth?

Nope!

Yes. When they heard the roaring sound that Sayid thought was TCM, she said “If we’re lucky, it’s one of the bears”. ONE OF the bears…

I think we’re reading WAY too much into the banyan trees. I think they’re just a writer crutch. We need to have our heroes in peril, but find a way to get safe. Hmmmm…hide inside a banyan tree. That’ll work.

AS long as she didn’t say “da bearss!” :stuck_out_tongue:

shakes fist Oo, Rousseau that bitch! What a tease!

“If we’re lucky it’s one of the bears.” Meaning, there is something out there more dangerous than the bears. Okay, TCM, right?

“There are no montsters.” Okay so Tree Crushing Non-monster?

Yes, the bears pre-date Walt. So he’s not creating them, although he may be “calling” them somehow. Like the poor bird that said “On my way, Walt. AAK!” and hit the window.

I took her “there’s no such thing as monsters” comment to mean that whatever it is Sayid calls a monster, she doesn’t. It could be Alex, or it could be something else that, once you see it or understand it you wouldn’t call it a monster.

Of course, the french woman never said how long the bears had been there. She just said that there were bears. Walt had been on the island for a little while at least, and we don’t know how far his influence spreads so it’s still possible that the bears are a recent addition.

When you really think about it, it’s amazing just how little we know about the island.

As far as Sun goes, I don’t see her as being an anti-Locke. More like a power outside of his influence. Locke seems to be into the big picture as far as the island and the castaways fate whereas Sun, and to a lesser extent Hurley, seem to be more concered with the day to day details. She hasn’t clashed with Locke yet and I really don’t see it happening at all.

I’m with Charlie about trusting Locke. If there is anyone that is going to keep them safe on the island, it’s him. He lied about the door, but what would happen if he told everyone what he found. It’s possible that the others know that Locke has found the door, but seems unlikely as they haven’t done anything about it. If Locke spilled it, everyone would be out there to peek at the door. The others would know for sure, and craziness would ensue.

Also, Locke has yet to push anyone farther than they could go. He may be a bit harsh sometimes, but everyone gets just what they need.

I think Vincent will be back within the next couple of episodes, likely as a harbinger of something important. He may have run off after the bear. He may have run off for something else. We’ll have to wait and see.
