Lost 1.20: "Do No Harm"

Well, it’s pretty clear now that Locke’s gonna need to get himself a new puppy…

In my mind’s eye I see a knitting needle. No idea if that’s actually correct.

Having suffered a collapsed lung myself (repeatedly, in fact), it’s not that Jack was “puncturing the lung,” it’s that he was puncturing the chest wall. What happened to Boone is called a “tension pneumothorax.” The lung is perforated, and air is leaking out of it into the chest cavity, between the lung and (IIRC) the pleura. As the air builds up, it becomes harder and harder to draw breath, and in fact the pressure can force the lung toward the center of the chest and impede the heart from beating. (This happened to me.) Emergency treatment is based on the idea of relieving this pressure; the lung is still collapsed, but the associated effects are no longer endangering the patient’s life.

Re the baby-as-reincarnated-Boone idea, at least in terms of maintaining net-zero in the number of castaways (one dies, one is born), don’t forget that a couple of people have died previously. There was the woman who died (who Boone the lifeguard was trying to rescue), and there was the Scott-or-Steve dude who was killed by Ethan. As far as I know, we haven’t had any births to compensate for those deaths.

Duhhrrr: “…the woman who drowned…”

Awwwww. . . I was under the impression that we had new episodes UNTIL sweeps. Gah! Hey Rockle, we share the same birthday!

did you see how much boone freaked out with the resetting of the fracture? IMAGINE the sound he would have made after the hatch? or the axe? plus, i’m not a dr, but didn’t jack just pump him up with blood? wouldn’t cutting off a limb severe a major artery? they aren’t in an ER, i think it would have been a little difficult to turnacate that sucker.

You’re right, now that I think back–I have the same knitting needles.

Jack had already tied a tourniquet on Boone’s leg.

point remains the same. OHWEEEE!

btw thanks for the spelling tip…i knew it didn’t look quite right :smack:

I just have to point out how amusing I find this–you asking me if I saw it when I was sitting next to you on the couch.

Another thing that struck me today was that if Jack had known about the heroin, he could have at least eased Boone’s pain a little, though I don’t know how advisable it is to dope up somebody who’s already barely breathing. He did already have the tourniquet around Boone’s leg. He certainly would have severed an artery if he took the leg, but I was imagining he’d immediately cauterize the stump.

I shouldn’t have thought about that right after eating spaghetti for lunch. Ugh.

quarterize the stump lol…i’m sorry i had to laugh outloud there. people are now looking at me :dubious:

I loved this episode. I went into it thinking “Ok, Claire has a baby, Boone fights for his life and we see more Jack. blah blah blah”

But that’s not how I felt during the episode.

I was gripping the coach during the decision to amputate and felt crushed during the scene where Jack told Shannon. I loved that long shot without dialog, because we knew what was being said. Plus, you don’t have to be a great actress to pull off grief from a distance

I think this will be the only major death this season. I don’t forsee anyone else biting it. But I could be wrong.

No, but that trunk full of money that one rich guy had…oops! Wrong Island! :o

I thought the episode was going to get real interesting when Jin answered the calls for help, apparently leaving the boat unnatended.

I may need to see the episode again, but when Jin and Charlie left Jack to to Claire, I think it was still light out, but it was well after dark when they arrived. Just how big is this island anyhow?

And how is it that no one else was around when Jack was treating Boone or Claire was giving birth? It seems too unrealistic that the other castaways just disappear like that. I think in reality, they would interact with the faceless castaways more than they seem to.

Happy birthday to us! You, me, and Audrey Hepburn.

Over in my LiveJournal I took an informal census last night.

I figure our little community has 44 members, not counting Danielle, and assuming no deaths or births have happened offscreen and unreported.

I agree – plus, we never heard “I now pronounce you husband and wife”. Marrying somebody for the wrong reasons isn’t the way to fix things if you have problems with commitment.

Or non-commitment. Whatever Jack’s problem was. Or is. (Confused much?)

Well, after Jack passed his hand over Boone’s face to close his eyes, and the camera stayed on Boone’s face for a few seconds, I was bracing myself for the inevitable dramatic moment where his eyes fly open - he’s not dead!! I’m glad they didn’t go that way. There are only so many ressurections you can pull off in one season, really.

Do we have any volunteers to go back and check taped episodes for the presence or absence of a wedding ring on Jack’s finger? The whole wedding storyline really threw me for a loop. But if he’s married, it would explain his disinterest in Kate.

I dunno. I’ve chopped wood before. Sometime you hit where you’re aiming and sometimes… “Uh, sorry about your penis, Boone.”
