Lost 1.20: "Do No Harm"

I assumed it was “letting go of enough of his commitment to being a doctor so that he could be a husgand.”

Wasn’t there some conversation between Jack and Rose about Rose’s husband taking off his wedding ring because of altitude swelling? Didn’t Jack give a knowing respose?

You’re right–but I think it was a doctor’s knowing response, not a “Yeah, that happens to me, too” response.

I thought so at the time, as well.

FWIW, after watching the episode, I was left with the distinct impression that Jack DID marry the girl. Which means we get another flashback to show why she ain’t around anymore.

I think the key would be to look at Jack’s first flashback, and check for a ring there: the wedding obviously took place before all of the trouble with his dad. I don’t think he was wearing one then, though, because someone would have noticed something like that.

But even if Jack’s not currently married, and hasn’t been for a little while, I think the fact that he was married could be enough to explain his disinterest in Kate. But maybe that’s just the part of me talking that wants to see Kate and Sawyer kiss again.

I don’t think that Jack drinking the night before his wedding (and he didn’t seem that drunk to me) can really be compared to his father operating under the influence. I didn’t get any kind of a “Jack is/was a drunk, too” vibe from that flashback. <shrug>

(My kingdom for an “I dunno” smilie!)

It made me think about Jack’s scene on the plane–when the stewardess was handing him extra bottles of vodka. I think he was well on his way to becoming a functioning alcoholic.

omg DEFINITELY hero worship going with his wife or whatever she becomes. you could so tell during the speech she gave at the dinner. it was kind of disappointing though how blatant the writers were about that. they could have just had a sign above her head that said “hey, i’m in love with him because i can walk!”

i don’t think he’s still married. it would have come up, especially with kate. unless…now this is far fetched. his wife died or something, or maybe her paralysis came back…ooooooo.

lol you should post that over in the “are there circumstances where it’s ok to cheat” thread lol.

I think Jack did go through with the ceremony. When he first started his speech (I hesitate to call them “vows”) it looked like he’d back out, but by the end I think it was clear that he intended to stay. The look on his wife’s face showed the same doubt and then affirmation, I believe. And it could be that he doesn’t wear a ring because he’s a surgeon. I don’t think they’re allowed to wear jewelery into the operating room, so he may just not wear his regularly, if at all.

StG

This is of no real value but - a lot of physicians I know (I work in healthcare, so know a lot) don’t wear rings - they get in the way of washing their hands and doing intricate, dextrous activities. Obviously this is more the case with surgeons…

I, too, thought the ep made it clear that Jack did go through with getting married, but the lack of a ring doesn’t tell us much at this point.

Misnomer, At the rehearsal dinner, when she took the microphone from Jack, his fiance said something that made me think he was drinking a lot. I can’t remember the exact words, but something along the lines of “This microphone is tipsy.” And then he was downing vodka or something straight from a huge bottle. If you can drink a half a liter of vodka straight and still stand up… I definitely got the impression that he was a drunk. Which is strange because we know that he eventually turns his dad in for operating under the influence.

I think the microphone line was a reference to the best man being hammered. But Jack was drinking heavily down by the pool, and he was also drinking on the plane before the crash–anybody remember him drinking in other flashbacks?

I just watched the first episode again recently, and if you look at how he downed the vodka that the flight attendant gave him, he looks like he’s really needing it.

A couple of things that have been brought up:

  1. IANAD, but if I recall my biology, you don’t need a pump to do a transfusion between two people. The hearts are the pumps. You put the needle from the donor into a vein pointing “upstream”, and you put the needle into the donee pointing “downstream”.

  2. See previous caveat, but I’m given to understand there is tissue damage from any type of amputation where impact is involved, that travels backwards away from the impact site. Which is why they didn’t use a guillotine method back in the days prior to anesthetic.

  3. My wife has decided that she would like to touch Jin in his swimsuit area. I told her if she’s ever stranded with him on a deserted island, she’s got my blessing.

That third part really has nothing to do with the show…

I had to look it up, but I knew the Best Man had played someone’s dim-witted brother before.

Zack Ward was on the show Titus. He played the title character’s brother.

Since people are talking about flashbacks and drinking, do y’all remember what Jack had to go through at literally the last minute to get his dad’s body onto the plan? I don’t blame him at all for needing a good drink after that.

He’s drinking from the bottle the night before his wedding and you think this means he’s a budding alcoholic???

I knew I recognized him, but couldn’t figure out from where.

The quote is from Entertainment Weekly if anyone is interested. The men of Lost made the cover for the new issue and there’s a short interview with Ian Somerhalder. He only sounds a little bitter.

And I got the impression that he wanted a stronger drink on the plane because he wasn’t particularly crazy about flying, although I don’t remember if he said anything specific about not liking to fly… Some people are nervous fliers and usually want a stiff drink to help them through it.
