Lift? No. But in a typhoon there could be substantial flooding as it comes in. The portion of the island that it ran into could have been underwater at that point and as the waters receded the ship was stuck in place. That isn’t likely but I don’t have any other explanations I can offer.
I don’t think the numbers were part of the hatch, in the numbers episode the numbers appeared to be etched into the concrete structure of the radio tower that is the source of the French Womans transmission, and before CFL changed the message, the source of the number’s transmission
Interesting, but the poen is about an actual rock, not a ship. No?
Makes as much sense as a jetliner coming apart in the air and parts of it landing gently enough that (at least) 46 people can walk away from it.
I got that impression too. She’s his dream girl in a lot of ways, I think, with the whole bat-shit insanity thing aside of course.
I heard “SHE took my baby” instead of “They”. I assumed CFL grabbed the baby and took off-maybe to protect it?
I also agree that Walt’s got some sort of strong mental power thing going on that we’ve only seen tiny glimpses of. I get the impression that he doesn’t yet know how to control it completely and may not even be fully aware of it. I think the “Go back, Vincent” scene was key to this, as tripthicket said.
…Including one who hadn’t walked onto it in the first place.
Hmmm. I still have that episode on my DVR. I’ll go back and check. I assumed it was the hatch, but maybe not. Of course, there could be other hatches, too.
The spot where the numbers are engraved is back-filled with dirt when Hurley is there.
I just checked my tape and the cameraman is not visible to those of us stuck in the stone age with non-widescreen TVs.
:smack: Sheesh. (Partially) wrong set of magic numbers. I twigged to them because they’re the big Discordian two, and then later my memory spoojed some of the low Hurley numbers into.
Shows you what a slug I am that being woken up at 8:15 seemed like a plausible cause for a shouting match.
She was also in the Resident Evil movie.
I think the scratches were to show us that Danielle still isn’t being totally forthcoming with them.

Possibly pointing towards an answer… Warning: Next Episode/Second Season spoiler from The Fuselage
1. In Exodus part II and III we’re going back to the airport, and this time we’ll be introduced to the tail section cast (Glenn Cannon, John Walcutt, Michelle Rodriquez) who’ll be permanent castmembers next season. They’ll be 3 of 4 survivors from the tail-end of the plane who landed on the other side of the island.
- We’ll find out in Exodus II that Rose’s husband did survive the crash but went missing a few days after the crash when he went off into the jungle looking for Rose (no actor will be cast for this role until next season).
Well, to be fair, its hard to tell how far in from shore the ship was. They walked along the beach for awhile to get there, so it might only be a quarter or half mile inland from the ocean. If that’s the case, then it is conceivable that a very powerful hurricane or maybe even a tsunami could have deposited the ship there basically intact. Or maybe a Wizard of Oz style waterspout…
Seeming as how last names are important on this show (Jack Shepherd) I’ll throw out that “Arzt” means medical doctor/physician in German. I’ll be shocked if he survives the finale…
*tripthicket, I agree with you about Vincent and Walt. Walt made him go back, not by yelling at him, but by something else.
Sawyer doesn’t have a hairy chest. His jeans were rather low around his hips. Glistening with sweat…mmmm.
Anyone get a good look at Jack’s tattoo? And did you notice when Danielle took off her shirt she had no underarm hair? Come on, she’s been on the island for 16 years, she’s French, and she has clean underarms? (Those little things bug me. I guess they can’t have the wimmen of the island getting all hairy and stuff.)
Isn’t it a little ridiculous to be worrying about how the ship got so far inland. I mean inland on an island with polar bears, monstrous “security system”, buried UFOs (?), “the others”, dead people walking around (Jack’s father), ect.?
Speaking of islands, I see no one, so far, has commented on my question about whether or not where they are is really an island…
Minor nitpick. Sun was supposed to have learned English in secret so she could get away from her husband so I don’t find it realistic that she would know the word “starboard.” Left and right, of course, but starboard is a more obscure word for a non-native speaker to learn.
And you may be right that there is a legitimate explanation why Hurley didn’t notice the numbers. Someone suggested it was on the base of the radio tower, which I find implausible, since I don’t think we’ve ever been shown the radio tower. Someone else suggested that the numbers were on the hatch but were covered by dirt when Locke and Boone dug out the hatch. More plausible, in my opinion.
But it would have been nice if Hurley had seen the numbers, as it would certainly make them aware of the weird coincidences we know that they don’t.
Could someone please tell me what happened when they came back from commercial after Arzt screaming “RUN”?? Our channel cut out for about a minute and came back to the cast aways in the tree.
Thanks.
The maps Sayid took from CFL showed it as an island. She’s been there for 16 years, so it’s not outside the bounds of reason that she went walkabout and created the map. It would surely suck to get stranded on, say, the tip of Baja California and think it was an island just because it never occurred to you to walk around it… She may be crazy, but she’s not stupid.
I’ve had that thought myself from time to time – I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be an island, but it’s a good point – asking how do the castaways really know that? They haven’t walked around the whole thing. Sayid saw Danielle’s hand-sketched map in episode 9, and perhaps she has walked the whole shoreline (in her 16 years there).
But it’s amusing to think that maybe they’re on a peninsula, and there’s a gas station and a McDonalds 10 miles up the shoreline.
Hurley: “Dude. I’m tired of McSea Urchin. I’m gonna go get a Big Mac.”
Hey, I’m with ya. Somebody wakes me up at 8:15, and there will be hell to pay.
There seemed to have been a lot of emphasis on Arzt’s name in the last couple of episodes. The writers even went to the trouble of spelling it for us. Significant?
Arzt is German for “physician,” no? (Didn’t one of the castaways refer to the character as “Doc?”)
Just how BIG is the island, anyway? We’ve seen several excursions from the 815 base camp, and Locke & Boone, Sayid, Jack and others have covered quite a bit of ground. But sizable new features are still getting discovered, like
Richard Hatch (CFL didn’t know about it after 16 years!)
Blackrock
The Beechcraft
CFL’s home
And the island’s still big enough to hide other people, places and things, like (presumably) the tail-section survivors, wherever the Others live and wherever that radio tower might be.
Is it possible this island is as big as Oahu or Maui? And yet undiscovered by Polynesians, Captain Cook and Sandals resorts?
