Lost 1.24/1.25: "Exodus, Part Two"

That’s something I noticed, too. Hurley wanted the flashlight because he didn’t want to carry a torch around his dynamite. Of course, that left the people actually handling and working with the dynamite with only torches for light. Sloppy writing.

Tsunami, anyone?

I realize that it’s a bit silly to complain about their use of artistic license, however…

**Claire’s boobs would have been leaking like faucets had her newborn been taken away from her for more than a few hours.

**I own a 32 foot pontoon boat and I have no delusions that it’s sea worthy. Even though Walt’s raft was well built considering they had no power tools, the raft is too flat. One rogue large wave and woosh! they’d all be swept overboard. Speaking of the raft, how are the getting fresh water? Are we ever going to see them fish?

**My biggest complaint of the episode: Sayyid racing through the forest like a stallion and then suddenly insisting on stopping to rest, knowing that The Others were supposed to come and KILL THEM in a few hours, not to mention that every minute that passed took Danielle and Claire’s baby farther away from them was the most CONTRIVED and ill-fitting scene I’ve ever seen. It’s like they knew that it didn’t make sense, but they wanted to expose Charlie to the heroin, and just shoved it in anyway. Blech.

I feel Sayid was Hawkeye-ing it and only stopped for Charlie to rest, not for his own benefit.

Normally, the name of a town under the ship’s name would be the home port of the ship. Indicating that the Black Rock is an English ship.

I found the Seating chart off of the Oceanic Airline’s website. I had assumed the plane had more seats, so the chart was really helpful to giving myself a better idea of where everyone was on the plane. (for extra fun, click on the seat #s 4,8,15,16,23,42 in order)

So, what happens when you click them? This is not loading for me…

I thought so too. In fact, doesn’t Sayid say something like, “You can’t breathe. We’re stopping to rest.”? I didn’t find that scene contrived at all.

Well, actually I don’t think Rose has officially “disappeared” – we just haven’t seen her specifically for quite a while now. Although that’s the case with most of the “non-clique” survivors…

But I was mainly pointing that out as another recurring theme. Found it interesting that Boone used pretty much the same words to Jack.

Or maybe Hurley was the only person being overly safety-conscious. Although he needn’t worry. His numbers tend to protect him and kill everybody else. (Unless now that he’s at the island, the numbers don’t care about that any more).

Well, they did load up a lot of provisions onto the raft first, although I don’t know how long they intended for them to last. There was even a mention a week or two ago about loading the raft with coolers of fish, and Sawyer wondering why they weren’t just going to catch fish FROM the raft. But you’re right – one big wave and woosh, everything’s overboard. The castaways might make it back to the raft, but the provisions would be seriously gone.

It takes a while to load but you see a very interesting trailer for the second season. If you click on individual people’s seat numbers you can see info about them and if you go to certain pages you can read secret messages.
I didn’t fully explore that site before I posted and I accidently stumbled across a possible spoiler. :frowning:

DO NOT CLICK RANDOMLY AROUND THAT SITE UNLESS YOU DON’T MIND SPOILERS

It contains a picture of Abram’s screenplay which includes a description of the monster.

Locke, upon seeing the mining gear and dynamite, said it must be heading to a mining colony. Perhaps there was a small-scale slave trade on the east coast of Africa for specific colonies?

She set the fire probably because she thought the black smoke was a meeting signal for the others. She wanted to find the others, and bring the baby to them, in exchange for her daughter.

How long does diesel keep? The scientific team’s ship was grounded, but not necesarily lost. If diesel keeps indefinitely, then they could be using the diesel from the tanks of that ship.

Right - writing goof. Sayid even said, I think, when he was installing it, that it had a +/- 15 degree search area, meaning they’d only see 30 degrees in front of the unit.

That’s not sloppy writing. Hurley could just be more squeemish about it, and the others figured they were competant enough to handle dynamite and a torch, so they made him feel better and gave him the light.

I understand that thinking, but I just don’t agree with it. Basically, the others lit a fire with black smoke when they came for Alex. Now while this might not be true, it would seem odd that she would think that black smoke would call them if this didn’t happen. Now assuming the others are the one on the boat who took Walt, then they did come after the child. Now wouldn’t it be a big coincidence for CFL to have lit the fire at the same time the Others came after the child?

That’s why I don’t think she set the fire. Although as usual, I could be wrong.

The last three scenes are…

Last) Jack and Locke opening the hatch and peering down

second to last) the scene on the plane where all the main characters find their seats.

third (the important one supposidly)) Sayid and Charlie bring TH back to Claire. Claire hugs Charlie, Shannon hugs Sayid, and we see the statue Charlie took from the plane.

I think CFL set the fire and set off in search of the baby, then, in her madness, forgot that she had set the fire and went there because that’s where she thought The Others were.

Well, duh, it’s been eating people!

What was the rationale behind the airline personnel having to carry Locke on? I know they said the airline’s wheelchair was missing or something, but why couldn’t he use his own wheelchair to get on the plane?

I liked the episode but it suffered from heightened expectations. I wasn’t left with my jaw dropped and the hair on the back of my neck standing up. There have been better episodes earlier in the season, leaving me wanting more. I figured the end of the season would be a doozy.

You know what? Editing it differently may have made it more climactic. Wasn’t the Walt/Boat People revelation more interesting than the hatch that…wait for it…LEADS FURTHER INTO THE GROUND!?

Many Random THoughts:

  • Even as a hardcore fan (defined as a person who read all 6 pages of this thread before posting) Arzt’s “clique” comments worried me. This show does not need to get too self-referential. Sure, we all get a good laugh, but at a certain point, constant “camera winking” crosses the line from Drama to melodrama.

  • Anyone else think the BOP of the plane people will be like the guys from that episode of Seinfeld with the Bizarro Jerry? They have a Doctor named Lamb. A bald survivalist named Keyes. A guy from a band named Rear Suspension?

  • I think our debate from the “Boone is converted by Locke” episode is settled. DEFINITELY from the ground.

  • Anyone else find Kate’s mention of the $23,000 bounty a little forced?

  • When Charlie was yelling there were no “Others” I laughed. Didn’t Charlie KILL one of the Others?

  • I doubt they will start over from Day 1 of the BOP cast for next season, but it will make for a LOT of flashback fodder. Heck, what about a spinoff?

  • I liked Jack’s comment about wanting him to be a leader until he makes a decision.

*I think Hurley’s curse caused the crash (witness the fritz out of machinery around him) and Walt’s powers saved them from death. I think that moment of recognition was to hint at the clash of their powers.

*I don’t think Walt has ANY true control of his powers.

  • I can’t believe the “Others” were just some asshats in a fishing boat. There has to be more. Did anyone get a bead on the main guy’s accent? And were there a larger than average number of flies around him?

  • Finally, to those calling Lost the second coming of Twin Peaks. Wait to be disappointed until they actually disappoint you. Don’t get disappointed because you FEAR disappointment. It’s not a healthy way to live. It is like dumping a girl who has been nothing but good to you because you fear losing her.

Absolutely agree. Once was funny, any more and it gets tired and lame.

Good point.

I don’t think so, either - in fact, I don’t think Walt even realizes he has ‘powers.’ He just thinks he’s lucky. Remember his comments to Hurley while playing backgammon?

I believe regular wheelchairs are too wide to fit in the aisle of a plane. That brings up the question of why Locke’s regular wheelchair was found on the island, but I assume it was just stashed in the luggage compartment.

Huh? Could you sum up the debate in a couple sentences?

The question about “no footprints by the fire” was raised. I see it as a trivial matter to brush away footprints with a leafy tree branch, should one be so inclined. But more relevant is that it is a sandy beach on a windy day. And they first saw the smoke in last week’s episode. Consider how much time must have passed between lighting the fire and when our heroes got there. Hours and hours, by my estimation.

So it wasn’t the footprint-free sand that I found strange. The fact that there was no sign of human activity (other than the fire itself) within site of the fire was what I found strange. I expected to see…I dunno, maybe huts or something.

On second viewing, I noticed that Hurley was bone dry when he got to the final boarding gate. Then the back of his shirt was damp 30 seconds later when he hugged the gatekeeper. A few minutes later, as he’s stepping onto the plane proper, he was drenched. Annoying continuity error. (Of course, when he sat down, I imagined how much it would have sucked to sit next to him, all stinky and whatnot. And then I imagined 3 of him crammed into the 3 seats across, and was reminded of how much I am a fan of the double-seat-purchase requirement policy.)

I was annoyed by one thing pretty much the entire two hours: “Um, why is the only doctor on the island anywhere near unstable dynamite?”

I didn’t see tentacles around Locke’s foot. In slow-mo, I thought it looked like an obvious “not meant to be seen” rope used by the crew to do the actual dragging. (But then again, I don’t have HDTV, so maybe my VCR just blurred up a cool effect making it look mundane.)

The blonde chick who blew up the raft, in (low-def) freeze-frame, didn’t look like any definite age to me. Could have been 30, could have been a teenager, IMO. Speaking of that scene, Sawyer appeared to have been shot in the shoulder. Should be fine. Aside from the adrift in the middle of the ocean bleeding like a stuck pig thing, of course.

Overall, I was stoked with the finale, and was thrilled that they showed them back to back. How annoying would it have been if they only showed one? At 9:01, Locke was looking up at the monster in terror when they went to commercial. Yikes, that would have been brutal to wait an entire week.

Oh yeah, last point, someone in thread asked what the “Locke problem” would be. Anytime you have a deranged, (“Let me go!”) fanatical, charismatic “believer” in your midst, you will likely have problems. The number of things they might believe in that wouldn’t cause problems is vanishingly small; zero when you factor in that part of their belief is that (human) sacrifices are an acceptable part of the bargain.
