Lost 2.15: "Maternity Leave"

I loved the little baby Dharma jumper hanging in the nursery…

does anybody know if Desmond’s vaccine was clear or yellow? I remember it being clear, and the stuff tonight was yellow.

Claire wanted the potential adoptive parents of her baby to teach her kid “Catch a falling star,” and that was what the mobile in the nursery played… they were following her that far back?

Boy, Mira Furlan can sure go from one end of the beauty spectrum to the other, can’t she? When she was trying not to cry, she looked just awful, but when she looked like she was about to smack Claire, she was gorgeous…

Oh, and I think this one answers the speculations on whether there are multiple groups of “Others” – namely, whether Ethan and Bluebeard and the “Others” that took the tailies (including Goodwin) are all from the same group.

It would seem so. Since beardless Bluebeard (I think that was him) referred to how Ethan was supposed to make a list (just like the list that the Tailies found in the attack on them), and the presence of the fake beard and grungy outfits in this hatch. Seems to tie them all together into the one group of “Others”.

Just went back and looked at episode 1 from this season – Desmond’s appears to be exactly the same. The yellow tint, as well as the same bottle. Remember, Desmond’s was labelled with the numbers at the top:

CR 4-81516-23 42

The bottles that Ethan used in tonight’s appeared to have the same numbering on the label.

Except that Ethan’s also had one of the Dharma logos on the bottle labels, and Desmond’s didn’t (at least in the first scene from 2x01, when we first see Desmond’s vaccine bottles). But the rest of the labelling looked the same.

It also seemed to eliminate the possibility that the Others we’ve seen are just another group of castaways. They clearly had access to an operating hatch and an outside source of supplies.

Considering the clue she found in the first locker she randomly opened in the first room she randomly entered, does anyone else think Kate might have benefitted from looking around a little more?

Swan hatch didn’t have as good a health coverage plan and had to accept generic equivalents.

Maybe she did – after she found the beard and glue, the scene cut away to Claire, but maybe Kate did look around a bit more.

Wonder if she’ll tell Jack about the beard and outfits.

::snerk:: good one. :slight_smile:

This could explain why the others were so aggressive on the tailies and have been much easier on the main lostaways. They knew who they had with the tailies and what they were up against. No such luck from stupid, stupid Ethan. For all they now, the large group is comprised entirely of Space Marines.

Kind of a shame that nobody has the common sense to get all of the key players together to compare notes on what they know.

I agree, that was the most intriguing thing tonight. They’re putting on this big act to hide the fact that they apparently have a wholly modern, fully functional…something…going on. Very interesting.

Oh, and someone asked if Kate had ever seen Bluebeard. Yes, she has - he kidnapped her for the aforementioned line-in-the-sand confrontation.

middleman:

As a DVD-only viewer, let me assure you, I enjoy it just fine. The cliffhanger at the end of each episode is just as suspenseful as it would be if I had to wait a week or two rather than just a few minutes for the next one.

I can’t say how much the “water cooler” factor might bother me, since I work from my home.

The problem is that I burned through my entire supply of Lost in two weeks, and am now stuck waiting a year until I see more. I am not going to pay $2 an episode for an iTunes video when I know I’ll be paying for the DVD set. I keep myself semi-sane by reading the spoiler threads here.

Jimmy Kimmel is on right now, and just did a couple little “Lost” jokes. Including this one:

“Remember earlier this season, Michelle Rodriguez’s character accidentally shot Sayid’s girlfriend. Well, in tonight’s episode, Michelle Rodriguez’s character was elected Vice President of the island.”

heh

Yep. Tania Raymonde (Cynthia). She grew up good.

When Claire was leaving Aaron with Sun, and Sun seemed really apprehensive, I asked my friend "You think Sun will get “infected”? Didn’t the psychic Claire saw say that it was vital that Claire was the only one with a hand in the child’s raising? The previews seem to indicate I might have been right.

I thought that maybe the 2 little goatee-lets Eko cut off symbolised the 2 guys he killed. Is that painfully obvious?

The ballon guy is evil, “other” or not.

Airliners as a baby mobile? I smell a red herring perhaps. Unless the others just like shooting down planes, baloons and maybe SCUDs.

The alarm didn’t go off once, maybe the writers are giving that a rest.

Mine is that, as a deeply religious man, he needed to confess his sins. Since none of the Losties or Tailies qualifies as a proper priest, he needed a stranger. (I’m not sure why, but it feels right to me.)

p.s. that scene reminded me of one from Stargate SG-1, when a traitor is being held in custody. Teal’c comes in, sits down and says nothing. The traitor spills his guts in fear of what might happen. Uncle Henry must have had a puddle on the floor when Eko walked in.

I like that the logo for the new station has a caduceus. Fits with the “medical station” feel, of course, but with the Lost writers being the way they are I’m sure that the hermetic connection is intentional – especially since it’s combined with another mystical symbol.

So…

What happened to the medical lab over the last 20 days or so? (I.e. since Claire’s kidnapping.) Why was it ransacked and abandoned?

Maybe they were afraid Claire would remember where they were, so they decided to skidaddle? That’s the only reason I can think of.

(I missed the last five or ten minutes so if it was explained there, my apologies.)

-FrL-

The origins of the caduceus symbol are an archaic medical procuedure. (Sensitive readers might want to skip the ret of this.) People that were infected with parasitic worms would have a shallow cut made where the worm was near the skin. It was important to remove the worm in its entirety to prevent infection. A portion of the worm was gently pulled out each day and wound around a stick to prevent it re-entering the body. Eventually it reached a point where the entire worm could be pulled out and killed.

So there is a rough parallel here with what was being done to Claire. They were removing something from her body. They were, by our standards, not following modern medical procedure. They applied a minor medical procedure at the start to allow them to proceed. They were being gentle with her at first to get her where they wanted her. But eventually they reached a point where the time was right and they could rip out what they wanted.

Am I reading too much into this? Almost certainly but that’s what this show’s all about.

Was this the first episode that took place entirely within “island time”?

Just a few comments…

This ep. was more satisfying than some in the past month or so. At least we got more material to chew on for a while.

How much longer will it be before we get a bit of a scoop on Michael and Waaaaaaalllt?

One more Sawyer-nickname for Kate: “Thelma.” He never runs out of ideas.

The great thing about Eko is that he hardly has to say anything, because he can make every word, every bit of eye contact, count for a lot.

Anyone else totally annoyed by Jack’s constantly glancing to his left, whenever he’s talking to someone?

There’s a theory that the Rod of Asclepius developed that way, but the caduceus developed separately and has only (relatively) recently become confused with the Rod of Asclepius.

Serpents are associated with Hermes because they symbolize wisdom.

If we couldn’t read too much into Lost, it would be no fun at all.
