Lost 2.18: "Dave"

Damnit!

Since Hurley has spoken Korean and heard Jin speak English, we can only assume he’s mental. Hurley does not have the mental capacity to create a Hanso-like project in his mind, he simply does not have the background. He sells chicken.

I’m a fairweather viewer, unwilling to put up with a lot of the scheduling irritations, so this may be quickly shot down, but my interpretation of the big “Libby in mental hospital, too” reveal toward the end was that “Island Libby” is merely another Dave-esque fabrication of Hurley’s mind, and that Hurley is basing Island Libby on a random woman that he remembers seeing in the mental hospital when he was there. For all I know, Libby has interacted with other characters in ways that make this a complete impossibility, but I just got the connotation from that last shot that there was no real Libby on the island, just a delusion in Hurley’s mind based on the random woman from the mental hospital.

Any chance of this being legit “sixth sense” style?

Firstly, I have to say that I wasn’t buying the whole “it’s all in your head” thing, because that would just suck. There are too many other non-Hurley related storylines going on. It would be a copout to end all copouts.

Secondly, if someone mentioned my favorite line, I missed it: “There was a rollerskating polar bear with a mango, though.”

Disclaimer: I haven’t read the whole thread. I started with the most recent post once the show was over.

That being said…

I interpreted Dave as the latest interactive toy from the writers and producers to us, the internet contemplators. His “character” managed to vocalize many things I’ve seen and heard discussed on this very board and others, but in a way that eventually was just absorbed as nuance to the actual story they are telling. If that’s the case, I thought it was pretty slick, and it makes me wonder if it is a peek at what is to come with this interactive stuff over the summer that they’re teasing us with.

God could see purgatory. I think the island is in another universe/dimension.

Did anyone else notice Dave say, “pretty sneaky Leonard.” when he beat Hurley at Connect 4?

In the old commercials for Connect 4, the classic line was the kid going, “pretty sneaky Sis” when she connected on him.

I had a little chuckle out of it.

Anyone else notice that the door to the armory (where Henry is being kept) makes the same sound as the Smoke Monster?
When Ana Lucia opened and closed it, it made the same screechy and ratchety noise, sort of like the s/f guy has cut it in half and toned it down a little.
Very interesting…
I also think Eko is building a church.

Nope. Libby hypnotized Claire, just to choose the most obvious counterexample. She also interacted with the the other tailies.

I still hold out that Libby IS a pshrink who went off the deep end herself…

So…did anyone else catch that Balderella said, when leaving the hospital, “See you in another life”?

Wasn’t that Desmond’s catch phrase?

Finally, to be fair to Libby, it’s entirely possible that she’s a therapist AND a psych patient. Probably not, but possible.

Typically for anxiety. Ex of mine used them pretty continually - so did most of her friends.

Not likely it was there, so it’s probably more along the lines of Saywer finding it in Hurley’s bags.

I think people are mixing up some cause/effect on Henry, the button, the blast door, and Defcon Penguin. Why did Henry have to do anything? The sequence of events was as follows:

  1. Countdown on speakers
  2. Lockedowne (I’m hilarious)
  3. Parachute Resupply Drop
  4. Lockdown ends

Henry didn’t have to do anything. And the timing of the drop doesn’t even have to be that perfect…assuming that the lockdown lasts at least 108 minutes someone would HAVE to be in the computer room to Save The World. Particularly when the lockdown is for the sake (apparently) of preventing “contamination”.

My money is that Henry didn’t do anything. Either The Others (or That Other) doesn’t know anything about the computer and is trying to learn, or he just didn’t care.

-Joe

I personally think he didn’t have the time… the alarm was on the “final x seconds” and he was still in the air duct… I think he got to the computer as it hit 0 and then chose not to try and observed the affect.

Also, knowing how Locke percieves the neccesity of the button, it’s another way to manipulate him… IOW, it’s not about wether PsuedoHenry pushed the button, it’s about Locke’s since of pourpose…

Which can mean - “Now I’m done lying. After I told you that.”

What will Locke do now? Will he push the button the next time?

Also:

  • Him has to be Alvar Hanso.
  • Cheers to the casting directors. They know how to cast “creepy.” Between Ethan, the other that Ana Lucia killed (Played by Brett Cullen), Pseudo-Henry and now Dave, they have been on fire. Psuedo-Henry is incredible.
  • Psuedo-Henry also mentioned that he was “good”. I really think Dharma is some kind of science cult.
  • There was a line in the show that mirrored a Doper’s line (or prediction) from last week’s thread, but I can’t rememeber what it was!
  • Is the asylum a Dharma lab by any chance? If so, could Dave be real as part of an experiment on Hurley? The only thing that blows this theory is that Charlie and Eko would have seen him.
  • Didn’t Hurley give Dave back his slipper?
  • I LOVED that for the first few seconds, Jin and Sun were laughing at the Sawyer ass whupping. Only after it got intense did Sun make Jin break it up.

I agree, my first thought was not that Bluebeard was actually ‘nobody’ as in Gale is lying to cover for him, but that Gale was laughing at their cluelessness of what is really happening, like “are you kidding, that Bluebeard guy is nobody!” (compared to the Real Leader who is apparently powerful and terrifying.) If I believe anything about Gale it is that he is really afraid of The Leader, so much so that he is more afraid of The Leader’s wrath than getting killed by Sayid (although he is afraid of that too.)

He is there to mess with them somehow, and he has obviously chosen Locke as the person to get to. He is trying to get Locke apart from the rest of them and has been messing with him since the start, suggesting he not listen to Jack, etc. So I don’t know if he really didn’t press the button or if he is just messing with Locke. I am inclined to think the latter, since I think he wants to get Locke to trust him and to question himself. That is also why he helped him before. He does not really want to escape, or else he is just too afraid of leaving the hatch without completing his goal.

I don’t know if he really thought his Gale balloon cover story would hold though, but I think it really did throw him off when they discovered his lies and now he is frantically trying to make up ground. He is trying to get something from Locke. But if he is lying now and he did press the button then he obviously knows what happens when you don’t press it, and he seems to know that Locke has seen defcon penguin before. (Unless he watched it count down to the same point Locke did before and then pressed it, I guess…)
My first thought was also that Eko is building a church. And I still think Libby may be a shrink that went nuts (hey that is a stressful job  )

I thought it was a good episode about Hurley. I mean who wouldn’t think they were going crazy with all those numbers everywhere, especially if they had a history of it before!

I think Libby’s attraction to Hurley and her not wanting to tell Hurley where they have seen eachother is plausible.

She’s attracted to Hurley because he has been through the psych ward like she has. She can relate to him and has that bond with him.

She probably doesn’t want to tell him that since she doesn’t know how he will react. She may think that once he knows where she’s from he may not want to hang out with her.

OK, IMO Henry’s lying. What the hell does a “big magnet” sound like? Perhaps electromagnets make a sound, but I have no idea what sound that might be. Would it be very frightening? I think he’s playing with Locke’s mind and he knows a hell of a lot more than he’s letting on.

What would it mean for the show if the timer was a fake? Is it then just an experiment to see how people will behave under duress? Why do the hatch doors shut all of a sudden, and was it a coincidence that the computer timer was running out just as th doors came down? That seems like a piss poor set-up.

Question about the preview:

Why the hell was Jack going out into the middle of the woods and yelling, trying to get Walt back in exchange for Henry? Wouldn’t they just take Jack and trade HIM for Henry if they were so inclined? Seems kinda dumb, unless the preview is misleading (but that NEVER happens…)

It’s not just Henry doing a number on Locke. Now he has to ask permission from Ana-Lucia to talk to Henry. He should have smacked her with his crutch.

We heard the sound that Henry was describing. I could imagine describing it as a big magnet. It sounded like an electrical generator. I don’t understand how the description implies that he is lying.

Another good chuckle on Charlie’s line: “Is it a Starbucks?”

So correct me if I’m wrong, can we assume that Hurrley and Libby were the most connected “strangers” before the crash (Sun and Jin and Boon and Shanon don’t count)? Will this mean anything?

Sure other Losties had close encounters with each other, but Hurley was staying in the same psycho ward as Libby.

Man there were some great lines tonight, I loved it when Sawyer called Hurley “Deep Dish”!!

I’ll also say that:

  • Yes Eko is building a church
  • Yes Libby was probably a shrink who went off the deep-end for a while
  • No Pseudo-Henry did not lie. I’m sure he never pressed the button. How else would he know of Def-Con Penguin? Unless he was a hatch-mate before? Maybe with Desmond?
  • Next week Jack will try and lay some kind of a trap. Maybe he’ll win the guns back from Sawyer in a game of Omaha?
  • I agree there are far too many storylines for this to be all in Hurley’s head and would be way too much of a kop-out by the writers.
  • I totally called the “Good Cop”/“Bad Cop” routine of Sayid and Ana Lucia. I’m actually not minding AL anymore.
