Lost 2.18: "Dave"

That was my first thought on seeing the polaroid.

And no, I didn’t realize Dave wasn’t really there until then. I’m quite gullible that way.

Also the photo that someone linked to which was pretty much exactly that last shot of her sitting at the table in the hospital…

Well, that was more hard evidence (of a spoiler nature)… but many of us were suspecting it since the laundry conversation, which was some time ago.

Pseudo-Gale is still creepy when he and John talk. He’s a great character. Especially when we get to see Sayid abusing him.

In addition to being a huge waste of resources, that food Hurley threw on the ground is bound to attract polar bears.

Lotsa funny lines tonight. Kinko’s…photoshop…Do you think they really blew up the Death Star?

Just my opinion, but I think Henry’s telling the truth about not pushing the button. I orginally thought his purpose in getting captured was to check on the status of the hatch. I’m thinking now that maybe his purpose is just to cause friction. If The Swan really is just a Skinner Box, Henry’s stirring the pot could be another part of the psychological experiment.

My DVD recorder ran out of room during the last 2 minutes of the episode… could someone recap what happened after Libby found Hurley on the cliff? Pretty please?

She talked him down, they kiss a couple times and then they do a quick flashback to when Doc was taking a picture of Hurley alone and pan back to show Libby sitting at another table and being given meds.

Question, who is the guy playing Hurley’s doc? I know I know him, but I can’t think who he is and I don’t see him listed on IMDb.

The doctor was Bruce Davison, who’s been in a bunch of movies but may be best known as the mutant-hating senator in the X-Men movies.

Yeah, including me. I must have replayed that part a dozen times. Thanks, Tivo.

(bolding mine) Libby convinces Hurley that the Island is real becasue her experiences are real. Then she says her feelings for him are real and (kisses him) “that was real.” Hurley suggests maybe another kiss would convince him, but she doesn’t kiss him again. [/nitpick]

The fact that Libby didn’t kiss Hurley again after he suggested it, combined with their somewhat awkward chemistry, made me doubt her real motives. I sure hope she’s being honest, but I will be holding my breath until they show some real heat together. Their “romance” seems very junior high, especially compared with the one kiss that Kate and Sawyer had, which could peel paint 100 yards from the TV.

Yes, we most certainly were. That scene was at least as obvious as the polaroid scene in this episode.

BTW, I was the only one in my “Lost” group who figured out that Dave wasn’t real. I think most casual viewers were taken by surprise. But they sure did mess with us about the idea that the whole thing is taking place in a mental hospital. I mean, it’s the best overall explanation yet, especially since we know that a psych experiment is a big part of it one way or another.

Leave it to the writers, though, to keep a new idea completely open-- what the hell is Eko building? That was a nice little touch thrown in.

Well, I called it back in post #19, which was just after the first “Dave” appearance.

But then, I’m not a casual viewer – I’m a fanatic, like the rest of y’all…

Oh yeah, I forgot to add…

I started thinking about the whole “this is all happening in a mental hospital” idea during the first (I think) flashback when Hurley was sitting under the picture of the island in teh doc’s office. When we saw him in the later flashback, in the doctor’s office, was the picture different? It looked like it didn’t have any palm trees, but maybe you just couldn’t see them from that angle. Anyone else notice?

I laughed at fake-Henry’s description of the sound that a magnet makes. WTF? Unless you know it’s a magnet, you don’t say it sounded like a magnet… dude.

Also, the “he” that fake-Henry referred to is obviously the same guy as the “him” that Zeke referred to in Claire’s flashback inside the medical bunker.

No, no! He’s best known as “Willard.”

(cue rats munching on peanut butter!)

My friend was rambling at me at that point, which makes me glad that I usually watch Lost alone. No one to distract me from what’s happening on the screen.

It does seem somewhat junior high, but it seems sweet whereas the Sawyer/Kate thing is more like burst into flames.

I do question Libby’s motives though. I’m sure she recognizes him from the hospital and is keeping close in an attempt to divert him from thinking to hard on why she looks familiar. The question is why exactly though. I can’t wait to see one with flashbacks from her.

So, what was the entire point behind the main plot of the episode?

Did Dave represent Hurley’s resistance to change, or self destruction? I think he appeared only at moments of weakness for Hurley.

Why he was he trying to get Hurley to kill himself? Some sort of self-hate self destructive impulse? That contradicts him previously being a force of complacency, trying to convince Hurley that he didn’t need to change.

So why did he appear, and what was his purpose? And why did he try to convince Hurley he was in a mental hospital?

SenorBeef, you ask too many quesitons. Did you take your meds today?

Just to add another Sawyer-bestowed nickname: “Babynapper.”

Many great lines tonight from a number of people, good showcase for Garcia and Watros, good Hatchinations. The actor playing Pseudo-Henry is effectively creepy. Poor Desmond…He lost months of sleep over that damned button. I still wonder where he is.

I also want to know if Locke will be able to walk on his own when he’s done with those crutches. Are we to assume that Jack actually cleaned out the wound before he bandaged it? Sure didn’t look like it.

What!? Did I miss something?

Oh. Okay, never mind.

The first rule of Lost club is, you do not talk during Lost club.

:sigh:

I was wondering when this would come up. I’m glad it did though, since it’s relevant for once. As a Dave, I’ve heard this phrase more than one could possibly stand. However, tonight’s episode was worthy. I said it quite early in the show.

Since Hurley has spoken Korean and heard Jin

Anyone else notice that the Doc said that there were 23 people on the platform that only supports 8?
