Lost 2.3: "Orientation"

I’m guessing they mean keep pushing the execute button, not pushing the execute button is bad.

I was just passing on the TVGuide writing of the line which is really awkward.

Anybody store the orientation film somewhere? I can’t get it to load from www.thehansofoundation.org site. Probably excessive traffic…

I watched the film again but wasn’t sure if I saw it. In the DeGroots’ office?

It might be a reference to Lord Kelvin.

I take that to mean push the button=good. Don’t push the button=bad.

I rewatched the orientation video last night. Is it just me or does Marvin Candle’s left hand look fake. Could he have lost an arm?

Well that might be a good sign as to support the idea that they’re not just making it up as they go along… of course, they could’ve done the effect when making the DVDs…

Sayid and Shannon have needs which will be met. There will be nakedness for me.

No spoiler box required. I feel a bit responsible for this, having posted the link at the beginning of this thread that referenced The Third Policeman. I can’t say whether the book reference was a red herring or not; I am still inclined to think not. But, the edition that I just received from Amazon doesn’t have a page 4 (pagination starts with Roman numerals for the introduction, Page 7 for the book), so that hint might be a prank.

From this morning’s paper:

No. 42 - Amazon.com ranking for the novel “The Third Policeman,” after a “Lost” character was shown with a copy on the Oct. 5 episode, according to TV Guide. It had previously languished in the 200,000s.

I have not read the book myself, but the synopsis from The Literary Encyclopedia seems to have a lot of similarities to the goings on of LOST.

Mildish spoiler:

In E!'s Chat With Kristin, here was a Q/A:
“From loha26: Jin speaks English?
A:How effing ridiculous was that? I immediately emailed Damon Lindelof who
replied: “And check out Marvin Candle’s left hand. Weird, huh?” I am so Lost.”

I don’t get the impression the two were related, but the hand was definitely something we were supposed to notice.

It’s there in a pre-DVD recorded copy of it, too. (I looked back at that episode to see for myself).

I’ve been trying ever since Honey posted this:

I can’t get into the Orientation film anymore either.

Been looking around online for screencaps. Anybody know where a good one of Marvin Candle might be found?
(By the way, I’ve been reading the Lost threads since 1.1… Finally looked like too much fun to not participate. Hi, everyone.)

… did you become a paid member just so you could continue reading & posting in the Lost threads???

The synopsis doesn’t sound much at all like “Lost” to me. Maybe I missed something…

BayleDomon: I didn’t see it myself, but one of my “Lost” group told me last night he saw it. I trust him-- we do not bullshit about lost!!!

Haha, no, I’ve been lurking around for a while, but I’m always sure to stop in on Thursday morning to see what the Dopers thought of the episode. Figured I might want to make a little better use of my paid subscription.
Okay, let me actually contribute something with this post too… Seems like bigspaceship1 has stopped changing. It’s been the mouse and cheese all day long. The morse code up top translates as “A long time ago on an island far et” (did I put the end of it incorrectly into the translator?)

Is it just me, or does anyone else get the idea that the folks at Lost are having fun with us with that site, and it doesn’t relate at all to the show?

I found this one.

Now that impresses me. Chris Carter should take notes.

I’ve got to get a copy of this now: Robert Anton Wilson included a “sub-plot” (sort of, since it took place entirely in lengthy and progressively surreal
footnotes, which I assume imitate O’Brian’s style in the same way that sections of Illuminatus imitated Joyce) about De Selby and his work in one of his Historical Illuminatus novels. Had him discovering an extra level of semiosis that allowed him to discorporate and move his conciousness into the body of common literature, becoming omnipresent throughout all human history.

I had always thought that Wilson created De Selby out of whole cloth.

I think it’s just a fan site. It’s registered to Matthew Bardram, a font designer, and shares server space with Atomic Media Fonts.
