Lost 2.5: "... and Found"

Despite AICN’s ‘spoiler’ on who the lost member will be, does anyone want to put forth any speculation? Just pulling out of my butt, my money is on Mestereko because he fills the role that Locke fills and there is no need for the two so the writers will conveniently dump one.

According to my source, and I still need to confirm, regarding something tragic next episode…The person who dies is Michael, the person who kills him is Walt

He said they lost the track, and he would go back and look for it.

I’m guessing broken spines release something in the water that acts as bait.

Personally, I think that Mr. Echo and Locke being so similar is very important to the plot. Remember the whole white stone/black stone thing? There is definitely a white and black theme on this show. Mr. Echo and Locke are perhaps living representations of that.

Don’t the spines release poison? I thought it may have something to do with that. But how?

I like Echo – I think he is the Tail Section’s own Locke… I can see the two of them becoming friends. But I have the feeling he has a sinister past. I’ve read speculation that he’s one of the Nigerian drug dealers from the small plane. My guess is he was a real bad dude before his plane crashed on the island some time before Oceanic 815 came down, and living alone and trying to fend off the others by himself made him appreciate having other people around. Where the Tail Section Survivors seemed to stick together only when it helps them, Echo really seemed to respect Jin’s refusal to leave Michael behind. When Ana told him they wouldn’t wait, he responds with “I don’t expect you to.”

But I also got the feeling he might have gone with Jin to control what he saw. Could “Goodwin” have died at the hands of his fellow survivors and not of the other’s?

EZ

I refuse to read those spoilers about who’s supposed to die. I refuse!

It doesn’t help that I didn’t see the preview, because my channel always cuts it off at the end of the show. Do they say someone definitely dies or might it be like Boone’s dead-Shannon hallucination in season 1? And if it’s definite, is it one of our Losties, or could it be a Tailie?

I’m going to go with Analucia if we can kill off Tail people. Mostly because she annoys the hell out of me, but I detect a slight softening of her character in this episode which bodes well for a “kill off the hard-hearted character who learns to be happy again” death scene.

If we’re killing one of the original castaways, I really think that Michael’s days are numbered. We know pretty much all we need to know about his story now. There are no real mysteries left to solve except maybe his wife’s death, but if we keep Walt around we can use his flashbacks instead. Everyone else on the island (main characters, anyway) still have things to tell us. Why was Hurley in the mental ward? How did Jin and Sun get together if Jin’s from such a poor family? Sure, because he’ll be daddy-in-law’s enforcer, but I still have a hard time believing that a man who resorts to expensive matchmakers for his daughter will allow her to marry a fisherman’s son. What’s with Jack’s wife? Dead? Divorced? Kate’s still a mystery with her plastic plane. And why is Locke in the wheelchair?? Tell me!!

Maybe there’s a little less to fill in for Shannon, Sayid, and Sawyer, but they still have more interesting lives than Michael and I think we’ll probably get more from them.

But if the writers are screwing with us and decide to kill off a minor character instead, I think Rose is a goner, just because the happy-sappy moment of her reuniting with her husband absolutely cannot happen. I can picture the scene where Jack gives Bernard the chocolate bar, telling Rose was waiting for him to come back.

Interesting. I like that idea. But I don’t think Locke would cotton to having competition, and a struggle would ensue. I remember reading about a “mysterious black man” in some of the previews this summer. Mr. Echo = Mysteryko?

It seemed like that to me. I distinctly remember saying that the one pair of legs with the mud streaks looked like it went by twice. I’ll have to rewatch it in slow-mo.

Just a note… This episode was definitely a yawner, as these threads usually have a LOT more posts by now.

Just a few odd comments…

First, the tailies say that they have “trust issues”. Kate said the exact same thing in her first flashback (to the farmer about her hiding her money).

Second, I’m not certain that Kate was really looking for a message from Sawyer when she was reading the notes from the bottle. After all, Sawyer was on the raft; why would he write a message? Especially one to her, since he was leaving with it. No, I think she was looking to see if any notes said anything like “Hey, we’ve got escaped fugitive Kate on the Island, come get her! (Do I get a reward?)”

OK, wild speculation time (no spoiler box since this is purely wild speculation).
<WildSpeculation>
Jack mentioned his wife again last night when he told Sun the story about losing his wedding ring. Apparently his wife was away at the time, since he had time to search everywhere then get a duplicate made. So, let’s assume that his wife traveled at lot.

Suppose that the reason Jack is no longer married is that his wife died. In a plane crash. Somewhere in the Pacific… Hmmm…

Are we sure Walt’s legs weren’t in the line? Could he be the one with the bear? (I couldn’t tell if they were black or white legs, too dirty and going by too fast.)

There is an interview in this week’s TV guide with one of the creators that suggests a lot of interesting things, and tells a hint about who will die:
It said a main female character will die.

He also pointed out that it might be worth noting that everyone is just assuming that the plane crash took place in present time, that is in 2004. He said nothing has ever been said about the date of the plane crash and that they have been careful not to say anything in the show that would put a time on things, like having a character refer to a current event or election or something. Also in flashbacks we are unsure how long ago they took place.

When asked about the idea that the survivors are part of a big psychological experiment, he said it was an interesting theory, but one that they hadn’t considered.

He also said the reason Walt is not in promo photos is that he had a big growth spurt, but they don’t want to replace his character with another actor so they are trying to work around that.
I counted thirteen legs going by in the jungle, but it was tough to tell when they switched the view a couple of times if you were seeing a new pair of legs, or the same ones from the opposite angle.

He was taking off the spines and tossing them towards the camera (to his right), then pulling out pieces of meat and throwing that into the water to use as bait.

Oh, that’s good. 10 points for** tanstaafl**!

For a second I thought that maybe the bottle wasn’t even theirs. Maybe the Tailies had their own bottle of notes, or something.

I agree that the same legs seemed to be passing by, but it was hard to tell. Someone with a TV recorder and too much time on his hands can surely help us!

I loved the episode but I am also particulaly fond of Jin and Sun stories. I always thought there was more to Jin before we ever saw his story. It was great to see him showing up smart-ass Rambina with his almost effortless fishing technique.

The whole “orange” thing was driving me nuts. They kept teasing us with little things. They’re drinking orange juice, Sun will get some spilled on her and then they meet! The flower is orange, Mr. Lee will give it to her when she leaves and then Jin and Sun will meet! Then I started screaming, “where’s the orange?!”. Then we see see the chick in orange walk by and I thought “Noooo! It has to be Sun!” and bam they smack into each other. It drove me nuts how they strung me along but I loved it. It also shows that those two are fated.

As for the spec on who will be “lost forever”. I thought it would be Walt but other possibilities (if it is not the spoilered person) are Bernard who would probably be killed just before he and Rose reunite and maybe even die in her arms. I don’t think Rose will die. Or it could be Libby, she could be considered a “main character” now since she’s in the title credits. I would have said the red-shirt Cindy who we barely get to see but being a red shirt makes her too obvious and I don’t think they showed her in the previous as they said “one of these survivors will be lost forever” so she may get to hang around.

What freaked me out was, after Jin’s roommate told him his love would be orange, the next time I saw orange was when Jin found Michael.

You might have the makings of a slash fiction there!

Although I expect it will indeed be a death, it’s possible that if something turns people into ‘Others’, then “lost forever” means that.

With respect to the Lost Boys clothing - I figured it was taken off the tail sectioners.

Not entirely true. Last season, in the conversation between Jack and Sawyer leading up to the revelation that Sawyer met Jack’s father, the tip-off, or clue, for Sawyer putting the pieces together was Jack’s reference to the Red Sox never winning the World Series. Well, they did in OUR world, so this obviously all takes place before October of 2004. How much earlier, we don’t know.

I thought it had been established that the plane took off more or less the day the show premiered, and we’ve been watching the survivors from late September, 2004 forward.
