Lost 6.7 "Dr. Linus"

I liked the symmetry of going from scenes of Arzdt to dynamite not exploding.

I don’t know if I would do this, since Illana specifically said that both Sun and Jin were named Kwon and she didn’t know if she needed to protect one or both of them. And since she said this to Sun, who didn’t correct her, I am going to bet it’s “canon” so to speak.

Dammit, I wanted to be the first with the Dickless reference.

I think in a way that Dr Linus gets the best of both worlds, in Sideways World. He gets to manipulate Principal Dickless into getting out of detention, without having to do all that nasty administrative stuff.

I was startled when Ben and his father referred to Dharma. Isn’t the island underwater in Sideways? Does this mean that it sank suddenly and after the Dharma people were there? Islands don’t generally sink, Atlantis notwithstanding.

A good episode. Perhaps the best of the ATLs, but still what does it accomplish. Without some context as to the importance of the ATLs, it is hard to appreciate them. Sure, I might retroactively be blown away by a future revelation and think how clever. But week to week, it seems like a waste of time.

A few random thoughts:

  • I was SO hoping the sub would have a Dharma logo on it. After our discussion last week, I am looking for ANY signs that we will get a FEW more answers regarding the DI. Yet, Widmore was the next best thing.

  • Regarding the resolution of minutia, I am coming to terms with my inner fanwank, and appreciating the producer’s disinterest in resolving every little mystery (e.g. Henry Gale). I came to this conclusion last night when the diamond issue came up between Miles and Ben. I thought it was brilliant, but my wife didn’t remember what it was about. I reminded her of Nikki and Paulo and the spider bite. She said it might sound vaguely familiar, but I think she was humoring me. She’s watched every episode, but only once. And she has NEVER looked at a Lost website or MB. If my wife, who watches every episosde and is a bright person, doesn’t remember characters who were featured in an episode all their own, then maybe the causual viewer doesn’t care about a fat black guy who never appeared in the show anywhere but on a driver’s license.

  • That said, I think the DI is important…

  • Anyone have any opinion on how Alex wound up in LA speaking English? If the island was sunk in the 70’s, the French team never landed there. If so, Alex (whose last name is still Rosseau) should have been raised by (N)CFL and have a roaring French accent.

  • Any apparence by Artz is much appreciated. Though he may not need the work soon. He played Leno in the HBO original film, the Late Shift about the scheming behind Leno getting Carson’s job over Letterman. Surely, they will make a sequel now that there is new material!

The crazier Jack gets, the more interesting he becomes. I think his mad-eyed approach to this season is incredibly realistic. He’s seen some bizarre shit, and he’s just throwing logic out the window. It makes me really respect MFox’s acting ability because it is really a whole new character. I especially liked his handling of Hurely’s lying (any scene where Hurley is attempting deception is an instant classic).

I have not read the HP books yet, but I already knew that. Isn’t it very similar to:

Obi Won Kenobi, who Hurley referenced, who was more powerful when struck down and was able to guide/inspire Luke to meet his potential of defeating the Emperor/Vadar?

Also, do we give any credence to Mile’s comment that Jacob didn’t want Ben to kill him? Miles seems like a straight shooter here. If so, it negates the Kenobidorf theory…

Twice they’ve made it an issue of which Kwon it is, implying Sun or Jin. What if it is neither? What if the Kwon in question is the baby back off the island? Widmore and Sun were working together. What if Widmore brought the baby with him and she is in the sub? Chew that over!

I noticed MVP as well. But **Larry Mudd ** wins the thread with his comment on MVP’s BADASSSSS daddy issues.

I knew he looked familiar but didn’t make the connection! One of the best comeback lines ever! Ghostbuster, one of the reasons they invented the PG-13 rating!

Well, they went there and left. Unless it was the wrong island, we’re talking about The Island. So, it definitely did sink.

Keep in mind, as well, that the island we were shown underwater had New Otherton, including an easily-identified swingset.

Wasn’t it funny when Ben was scheming to take over the island…err… high school. It is so in his blood!

I’m guessing this confirms that the island sank when the Losties detonated Jughead. Ben and Roger must have escaped. Though how is unclear as I think Ben was still at the Temple at the time.

Actually, in the movie “Real Genius” he was suspected of hammering a 6 inch spike through a board with his penis. (not in the quote, but he got the girl)

And Ben’s dad (John Gries) played the guy who ruined his house with a giant popcorn bomb.

They both look a lot different in LOST.

Shoot, you JUST beat me w/ the REAL GENIUS connections.

Anyone think that Hurley is going to be the next Richard alongside “New Jacob”? Think about it… The old “How come Hurley never loses any weight on the island?” question is answered… Richard never ages and Hurley never loses weight. Think about it.

I came in to say this, but you said it better. Fox’s performance was wonderful - his serenity in the knowledge the dynamite won’t kill him clashed with the doubts anyone in that bizarre situation would inevitiably have - all of that written on his face. Wonderful.

And in the same episode that’s already full of Emerson acting goodness! Makes one almost forget my laundry list of unanswered questions and simply enjoy the ride.

Almost

Bram said they didn’t know if he was a candidate or not.

The way Roget talked about leaving the island, he made it sound like he chose to leave. So I’m thinking that the island sinking didn’t happen right after the bomb went off. There was a delayed reaction.

Which means if Hawking and Widmore got off the island, they could be the key to the ATL. They’ll remember Jack and Sayid going to blow up the bomb.

I’ve been thinking this all along since the baby was conceived before they came to the island and could have been chosen by Jacob. (not sure how he might have “touched” her though.

Seconded. The actor is great. Actually I like Kate’s actress too. I hate Kate-the-Character, but whatshername, the actress, is doing a wonderful job portraying a fairly loathsome character.

Oooh! I like that.

And if Little Turniphead and Big Old Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaalt are there too, we could get a lot of resolution on a bunch of issues. (The “Raised By Another” thing from the psychic is a MAJOR unresolved issue as are Waaaaaaaaalt’s super-powers.)

My take is that the timeline was altered some time in the '50s: maybe Mommy Locke wasn’t hit by that car or something.

If so, then time could have just slightly shifted here and there: Daddy Locke might have stuck around and therefore not have been a few hours late to a meeting with Mommy Sawyer and not started the chain of events that led to Mommy and Daddy Sawyer’s death etc.

If so, then the ripples could have affected Daddy Linus and made him a lot less of a dick–they went to the island, Daddy Linus rather than sticking around as a workman decided to leave and find a better job and not been on the island when it sunk after the bomb blew up in 1977.

I’m wondering if maybe the Island sank slowly, like a ship with a leak that can’t be plugged (hmmm…)

It looks now like Daniel should be alive in the alternate timeline. I wonder if he’s going to end up going back in time to stop the Losties from sinking the Island, and in the process destroy the happier alternate timeline.

I really like how Esau/MiB tried to temp Ben with the offer of power. I know he’s the bad guy now. Claire, Sayid, Ben; all have been offered the thing they want the most (Aaron, Nadia, and power). Ironically, it is Ben who is strong enough to refuse.

Esau said that his group will be on the Hydra Island. In last season’s finale, he told Richard that the survivors of the Ajira flight would have to be “taken care of.” He wants to kill them, and now he has a goon squad to do the dirty work for him.

I agree, but how do we reconcile this with Jacob’s offer to Dogen (bringing his son back to life). That seems like the same type of offer and it seems un-Jacob like. Or is it a more selfless offer?

I liked how they had Alt-Ben give his Alt-Dad gas (oxygen), only this time to keep him alive instead of to kill him.

Who? Oh, I didn’t recognize the name without the proper punctuation; you meant WALT!

I have nothing relevant to add.

I dug the Dr. Linus side story. It felt like Glee.

The baby was definitely conceived on-Island; Juliet told Sun so when she snuck her into the medical station for an ultrasound. It was a big deal to Sun because it meant the baby was definitely Jin’s, even though he’d been infertile before coming to the Island, rather than that of the guy with whom she’d been having an affair.

I thought the same thing! Nice ironic twist!

I stand corrected!

I assumed that the baby was not conceived on the island since she and Sun survived when all “the others” who had been pregnant had not, which was what Juliet was researching.
