LOST 6.8 "Recon"

Yet his last name is still Straum instead of Chang. Significant or a production error?

I say this every week this season, but I’ll say it again. Terry O’Quinn has found a new gear in his already brilliant performance on this show. He is overshadowing everyone. Think of how many distinct personalities he’s demonstrated. Loser. Crippled (Emotionally moreso than physically). Action Hero. Man of Faith. Man who lost his faith. Pure Evil. Likeable Leader. WOW!

Not sure it is a who or a what.

Wouldn’t you watch a buddy cop show with those two as the leads?

I wonder if it is because he was in smoke form when they shot at him.

My wife and I said the same thing. THAT’S not a twist. That’s not worthy of Lost DON-DON!

I didn’t find Charlotte attractive in her previous appearances. DAMN she looked good stateside!

I wonder if Flocke released her a little to keep Kate from bailing. Or he told her to fake it. There is a reason we saw but did not hear her conversation.

Best line of the night!

It is weird. He sent the freighter to the island, so he must have some way of finding it.

He knows where the Lamppost is. He gave Desmond directions. Eloise H. is the one who can find the island. Is he working with her (they don’t like each other) or does he have another source?

Perhaps not easier, but there’s certainly a more forgiving margin for error.

Since I’m in the Jacob is good camp, also put me in the “Widmore didn’t kill all the Ajira people” camp. I’m pretty sure Smokey is responsible.

Who has baby Kwon?

Baby Kwon & Aaron are the new Jacob & MIB. That’s how this is all going to end.

Maybe baby Kwon, Aaron and Walt and Widmore’s grandchild are all on the sub…

From skimming Lostpedia, it looks like baby Kwon is with her grandmother.

Sun’s parents.

I think MiB killed the Ajira people. Initially, I thought he would send the ex-Others to kill the Ajira people, but now I think he’s going to use them to fight Widmore’s people. He’s definitely manipulating the ex-Others. He didn’t tell them that he’s the Smoke Monster (only Sawyer, Kate, and Ben know this), but he did tell them that the Smoke Monster killed their friends at the Temple.

I’m afraid for Zack and Emma (those two kids). I still think MiB is bad, and those two kids might become a liability soon. I also think it’s significant that we don’t hear his conversation with Claire.

I have a theory about the sideways timeline: It is an integral part of Jacob’s plan. Widmore is going to support Daniel Faraday’s research because he wants to change history so the Island doesn’t sink. He will succeed, and in this way the main timeline (with the Losties time-travelling from 1974 to 2007) will be created.

So is Sawyer going to fall for/give sanctuary to Our Feisty Kate on the run? (…blarrffff)

maybe Kate really IS innocent in the sideways timeline, and not so blarfy? still rather have seen Sawyer with Juliet.
am missing Desmond a lot. Hope they leave him happy ever after with Penney if he’s not a big part of show anymore.

On first read, I thought this said that Baby Kwon is her OWN Grandmother.

And it didn’t seem that ridiculous in the scheme of all things Lost.

I forgot to mention that before. In addition to others talking about killing him, he’s talking about being killed (I think it was actually “I don’t want to be killed”) himself. So it seems he’s all to aware that he actually can be killed.

I seem to recall that they shot him when he was Locke, then he ducked behind a pillar, then the smoke form came in through the entrance and killed them all. In the midst of all that someone picked up a bullet and saw that it was kind of blunted.

On another note, had we ever seen those Ajira people before? I was wondering where they had come from, since I kind of assumed all the survivors had gone with Ilana, Frank, et al. Last season, were we ever explicitly shown a group of survivors being left behind on Hydra island?

Yes, most of the Ajira survivors were left behind on Hydra island. Now that they have died I believe we have four camps on the island:

  1. Team Jacob. Hurley, Jack, Sun, Ben, Ilyana, Miles, Frank and Richard.

  2. Smokey’s team. “Locke”, Sawyer, Jin, Claire, Kate, Sayid and the leftothers.

  3. Widmore and company on Hydra island.

  4. Rose, Bernard and Vincent.

Have missend anyone?

What about the Others that were at the foot? Isn’t Smokey’s team just the Others from the temple?

Why would they need two (that we could see) huge padlocks to keep Desmond in? I’m thinking it’s holding something much more sinister, or they’re planning on using the room to hold Smocke.

Now that I think about it, I’m not 100% certain. I think those people who were at the temple are with team Jacob at the beach, having followed Ilyana. I’d have to go back and check to be sure.

Yes, Ilanna’s team wasn’t actually that large: her, Bram, a huge case, Franks unconscious body, and like three other guys at most. They came over in what, just one boat? There were more survivors.

My review:

I think this episode was pretty weak overall.

I’ve been willing give some leeway to the sideways concept, but this illustrates sort of what I worry most about it becoming: every character simply more well adjusted and then a bunch of cameo gooses that never really go anywhere or have any logic to them. I mean, yay, it’s Charlotte. But why her? Could have been Ana Lucia. Could have been Libby. There’s no real logic to it that seems to tie back to, or from, what happened on the Island. And while I think some of the sideways stories have been emotionally resonant wholes (Jack, Locke, Ben) Sawyer’s, Kate’s, and Sayid’s were just sort of aimless. We get the concept of the alties already, and it’s getting thin and feels aimless. And we still have at least Hurley and Sun yet to go.

On Island, we have a different problem. We have so much to deal with and explain, and while, again, I had some patience for things when we were at least getting some answers each ep, this episode really seemed to be stalling for time. About the only truly informative thing in it was that Smokey had a crazy mother, which we’re sure to hear more about. Other than that, we have the character’s refusal to ask questions stretched to the absolute breaking point, even for Lost.

I mean, Sawyer: he knows Locke is not even human, even finds out that he’s a smoke monster. He doesn’t ask Locke anything more about this, to find out who he’s really dealing with. He doesn’t ask Widmore either. It doesn’t make sense in either case.

Likewise, I forget exactly how much Kate knows, but she knows Locke is something quite out of the ordinary.

They’re all face to face with one of the beings who’s been messed with their fates, and they don’t ask it any questions. Worse, Locke even SAYS that he will answer any questions… oh but only after we travel a ways, and then set up camp… which they do… and then no one asks him any questions!

The only potentially excusable one is Sayid, who DOES seem to have asked questions, gotten answers, and is totally shellshocked zombified by it. THAT at least has some plausible sense, even if happened off screen to keep the audience in the dark.

I’m hoping that the Richard ep will at least spill enough beans to the Jacob group that it will get things back on track.

I’m pretty sure that Ilana said they went to the temple. I seem to remember there being a lot more survivors with Locke at the end of Sundown than show up at the start of Recon though. Odd.

Miles explained that he knew her through his father. We know that Dharma was on the island in the alt timeline, because Ben & his father talked about it. Presumably baby Miles and his father know Charlotte’s family from their time on the island.

I keep wondering why all these actors with earlier smaller roles keep agreeing to come back for quick scenes so many seasons later. Wouldn’t they be bitter about missing out on the success of this show and refuse to come back?

Then I thought about it some more, and decided their decision was probably along the lines of “W00t!! I’m going to Hawaii!!”
