I don’t really get the wagon on septimus. The timing and rationale for his leap off the Colby wagon are certainly weird…possibly even TSTBS? (Too Scummy To Be Scummy) Seems like a scum needing to get off his buddy’s wagon would be more likely to find another wagon and focus on the new candidate rather than simply unvoting. But more to the point, septimus’ unvote is only scummy if he is Colby’s scum teammate…so why are people voting for him now, while Colby’s status is still unresolved?

It makes sense regardless of Colby’s alignment. If Colby is Scum, then leaving the bandwagon could mean that septimus is Scum and wants to save him. If Colby is Town, then leaving the bandwagon could mean that septimus thinks he’s going to hang anyway, and doesn’t want the blood to be seen to be on his hands. The problem is lack of accountability: If septimus thinks Colby is a reasonable vote (as evidenced by the fact that he did vote for him), and doesn’t have any better prospect in mind (as evidenced by not voting for someone else), then why isn’t he voting for him?

And yes, I do find that a bit suspect for septimus, but I don’t think it’s enough to move my vote. Especially given the presence of multiple Scum teams, as he points out in 345.

I’ve been thinking about this (thanks also to others who have commented). septimus’ unvote post is drawing heat because it looks so much like a scum panicking and trying to get off a wagon quickly, without taking time to make it look townie. But really, no matter what the alignments of septimus and Colby are, there were about SIX DAYS until the lynch deadline when septimus unvoted. There’s just no good reason he, as scum, would have felt such a huge sense of urgency to get off the wagon.

I am now leaning towards thinking that this is the sort of thing that would most likely be done by a player who wasn’t concerned about looking Town, because he actually is Town.

Do you really think scum would be admitting they hadn’t read the rules? I could easily come in here and just make random comments and slide through.

Yes, I think that if Scum had not read the rules, the would come here and admit it. As you point out, it seems a “Townie” thing to do…

The number one rule of being a successful Scum is to do exactly the same things that you would do if you were Town…and we have a lot of very experienced players in this game…

@Guiri: I kinda agree with you on both Prof. Preppywicker and Biotop (and myself actually, I suspect you might not have reached the post where I explain a bit more of why I’m slow, to Normal Phase…). Especially Biotop is usually heavy on analysis and less on the chit-chatty side of things. Prof. is more of a coin toss if you ask me.

This is even more unwieldy a game than I had imagined, and my imagination is usually prone to OVER-estimating, rather than under-.

A note- I hate the use of multiple names for the same person. Just something I have to get used to. I am a novice, so I never played with “roosh.” I get that many have, so calling the player ToeJam “roosh” makes sense for many. It throws me off, and there are already so many players to keep track of. My issue, and I will adjust. Just a note.

Okay, you caught me napping. Normally I would be spending Day 1 with Fluff because I am not an aggressive player, and there is rarely any kind of case that can be built. This game doesn’t really have room for much Fluff IMHO, so I’m reading and looking, but there doesn’t be much to comment on. Colby’s slip? Possible, but not anywhere near certain. My M.O. has been to joke through the first part of D1, and focus on Lynch the Lurker at the end of D1 (which would be, say, Friday or Saturday this time 'round) and see if a case can be made there.

So basically you lurk in plain site by posting fluff and then accuse others of lurking?

Or are you saying that the former implies the latter?

On Day One? Little of each, really. It’s as much (or slightly more) to go on as the minor slips so far, IMHO, and setting up a pattern of “it’s okay to be uninformed or miss things that are handed to you” is definitely not something we should want.

Yeah, I do, because scum do things to appear townie. And this way, you have an pre-set-up “tee hee, I was just SO OVERWHELMED that I MISSED IT” defense to a play that might otherwise be a scum tell. It wouldn’t be the weirdest gambit I’ve seen (or used).

On another note, on re-reading I realized that we do know more about the switches. I think most people glossed over it because it was in the same post as the link to the roles document, and we all went off and read that big long thing:

So what we know from this is that some powers have switches, those that do have two switches, and the switches were given out in separate PMs (hence why they don’t show up in the big-ass document, and probably what took the mods so long to get things started). Given that the game has three main factions, I’m guessing that all three have switch-controlled roles, with the two switches for each being held by the other two factions. Assuming no coordination between the switch-holders, this probably leads to a 50% chance of each of those powers functioning (on most cycles, at least: The three switch-related one-time powers probably override the ordinary switches).

This has implications, in particular, for the doc-killer scum roles (Hitman and Outrider, which were the roles I found most troubling). We’d been assuming that, given a single confirmed Townie, the Scum would be likely to use the doc-killer on that player, and that if they did, they’d kill the protector. But it looks like it might be more like, they kill the protector, if the doc-killer isn’t turned off, and if the protector also isn’t turned off. This makes it a lot safer for a protector to target a confirmed Townie.

On the matter of discussing power roles, I consider it mostly harmless and possibly helpful to discuss Scum powers: My general thinking is that, with seven people who know they can trust each other, all thinking together, they’re probably going to come up with any idea we have, anyway. But thinking about what they do can, sometimes maybe, help us come up with counters.

If I’m following you, your assumption is that:

A power town role will be controlled by one switch held by the mafia and one switch held by a wolf

A power wolf role will be controlled by one town switch and one mafia switch

A power mafia role will be controlled by one town switch and one wolf switch
And while I don’t see a reason to not believe that - I have no evidence to the contrary - it seems like it’ll make for an incredibly difficult to operate game mechanic. I don’t see how any of the switch holders can know what their switches do without knowing that the other faction also has flipped their switch.

In Mahaloth’s last game with switches, you only really found out if things worked at Dawn. There is an Olympic-pool’s amount of wine to wade through.

I think the conversation about switches are useless unless you are either third party, scum, or a person who has to rely on switches (which we didn’t see in the sample roles provided)

The votes on Professor are interesting, because they call him out on posting only fluff posts. Yes, we do have a week, and some fluff is great. But I don’t know if all of his posts are fluffy or not.

Besides, I’m still happy with voting septimus.

A question: If I have a post on a page, but continue reading, when I refresh, I always get bumped up to my last post on the page. Is there any way to adjust the settings so this doesn’t happen? I’d like to stay where I am on the page when I refresh.

No way to fix settings, but if you click on the “new post” arrow, the URL points to the earliest new post. A refresh will always take you back to that post. You want to use a URL that points to the thread itself (or a sub page). For example http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=815701&page=3 will take you to this page of this thread. Now you can scroll as far down as you want and refresh, and while you will briefly jump to the top of the page, it should kick you back down to where you left off once it finished loading.

My reasons are as folllows. (I know I’m repeating some arguments some others have already pointed out.)

In post 231, he changes the lead in vote tallies from 3 votes to 2 (Colby leading ToeJam). It’s early in the day, and it’s not like it’s an end of Day swing in momentum, but his main reason is that he doesn’t want to be on a bandwagon. But so what? It’s early. There’s no real lynch danger yet. The vast majority of players haven’t even voted.

He then in post 345 mentions his suspicions of Lakai, Johnny Bravo, and ToeJam as well as still being suspicious of Colby. Yet he votes none of them, doesn’t really go into detail as to why he’s suspects them, besides Colby, who he was so suspicious of he unvoted him with no replacement. Votes are cheap. Why be afraid to put yourself on the record? Townies shouldn’t fear screwing up.

septimus, you ask what your scummy motivation would be. It’s to hide in plain sight. To look like you’re playing as a townie, but to not actually commit to anything that could come back and bite you in the ass.

You also say Colby’s possible slip is the biggest ping you’ve got right now. That implies you have other pings. What are they? What exactly pings you in other posters?
