Well put gdave – it helped me understand better. Bo Katan is in a bit of a bind as Din isn’t an enemy. At least not yet. I suppose they could disagree on how to rebuild Mandalore and then fight but even then not the best story. She might have to be the real power behind Din as the figurehead.
Again, Din doesn’t seem interested in rebuilding Mandalore, but his previous quest is completed so maybe he goes for it for the lack of anything better to do.
By the way, one kind of subtle thing in the Boba Fett stinger:
Fennec comes into the throne room, and Bibb Fortuna is seated on the throne, with a slave girl in the classic reclining slave girl pose, chained to the throne. Fennec blasts the chain and shoos her away. Boba comes in, shoot Fortuna, and takes the throne of the king he just killed, in classic King Conan style. Fennec, his hot female companion…grabs a bottle of alcohol from behind the throne for herself, takes a swig, and then takes up her position, standing, next to the throne, in a classic advisor/confidant/partner pose.
Boba’s a ruthless killer, but he’s not a rapist or misogynist.
I did think it would have to be Luke, but didn’t think they’d actually do it. They basically gave the fans what they didn’t get in The Last Jedi - Luke Skywalker, legendary Jedi Knight.
The face was definitely a bit off, but still a very exciting moment.
Yeah, I think that story still needs to be told. Previously I thought there was a chance that might happen on yet another spin-off centred on Bo-Katan, but with how things played out with the Darksaber I think that will have to be a part of this show now.
Gives me hope that they can continue to evolve Din’s character.
The title “The Book of Boba Fett” doesn’t quite sound like the title of a show of its own, but who knows. In any case, I would like to see more of Fett as an actual bounty hunter/criminal, rather than the good guy he turned into this season. That stinger reminded me of the live action TV series that was supposedly in the works before the Disney takeover, that was going to focus on the criminal underworld and bounty hunters. I wonder if this was inspired by those plans.
And I guess Fennec will finally get to be an actual character on this.
Well as someone whose only knowledge of Star Wars comes from the movies, I thought it was an awesome finale! I loved seeing Luke & R2 again and I thought the CGI was incredible and looked completely real! I think people are just nitpicking because they know it’s CGI.
I hope that isn’t really the end of Baby Yoda! The scenes of Din and Grogu together are my favorite parts of the series.
You’re wrong. You’re just utterly, completely, objectively wrong. If the CGI worked for you, great. If the CGI worked for most of the viewing audience, that’s great for them and for the creators. It didn’t work for me. It just didn’t. It’s not “nitpicking because [I] know it’s CGI.” It’s a passing complaint that, for me personally, the CGI was still in the uncanny valley.
I realize this is a strong reaction to a passing point, but having people tell me what my “real” motives are, and that my feelings are “wrong”, is a sore point for me. Please don’t do that.
Whatever. And I maintain that it’s “uncanny valley” for you because you know it’s obviously not a young Mark Hamill and it cannot be a young Mark Hamill. No matter what it looks like, you know it’s CGI.
Is it possible that subconsciously I’m being influenced by the knowledge that the image is CGI and not actually young Mark Hamill? Of course. It’s also possible that the CGI used is genuinely still lacking, and that at least some objective observers with no foreknowledge of Mark Hamill or his real appearance would find the image to be in the uncanny valley. It’s also possible that it’s a combination of those factors.
But it’s not “nitpicking because I know it’s CGI.” It really is in the uncanny valley for me.
Your curt dismissal coupled with your continued insistence that you know more about my subjective perception of the CGI in question than I do is frankly both insulting and a bit bizarre.
Don’t believe “The Book of Boba” will be a spinoff, it’s just season 3.
Granted, I’m having a Mandela Effect trying to convince me that season one had a “The Book of” caption that I can’t find now.
My WAG is this shows Boba’s “good ending” as crime boss, while season 3 will recast and follow Boba’s earlier story post-CW and leading up to ESB.
Fourth or fifth season will be “Book of Bo-Katan” picking up the Din/Darksaber/Mandalore storyline.
I like Luke with the green lightsaber. To me it represents his progress in his mastery of the force. For me this goes a long way towards fixing the use of the blue lightsaber in Rise of Skywalker.
From your’s and other comments, I suppose I should also count my poor eyesight as having at least one beneficial side effect. I wasn’t at all bothered by Luke’s CGI appearance.
@Eyebrows_0f_Doom and @gdave, you might want to cool it a bit. It’s possible that gdave’s impression is just because of his subconscious knowledge, and it’s possible that he’s just a little more sensitive than most to the subtle details that make the uncanny valley. Either way, it’s just a matter of opinions about a work of art. De gustibus and all.
The only real thing that bothered me about how Luke looked is that he didn’t blink. CGI blinking is one of those things that are hard to make look real (for some reason) so maybe they deliberately avoided it. But its absence also drew my attention.
I thought the Luke CGI was disappointing because he never changed his expression and barely moved his mouth when he talked. It just looked weird. But it was 10,000 times better than Leia in Rogue One — when that was revealed, I actually stifled a small scream because it looked so fucking creepy.
For those of you who thought Luke, and maybe even Leia, looked completely real … good for you. I’m honestly happy for you. And a little jealous.
There’s another thread on this board about actors whose appearance changed so much over the years that they’re now unrecognizable. After Mickey Rourke and maybe a couple of others, everyone just started talking about people who’d aged naturally (or as naturally as a famous Hollywood actor does, anyway). That thread is full of:
“I just saw [actor] in [movie] and I didn’t even know it was her until I read the credits!”
“Really? I thought she looked almost exactly the same, except with gray hair.”
Some people are better at perceiving some things than some other people are.
As I said, the SW restored faces looked off to me, but apparently I’m much better with CGI than with actual faces … If I run into someone I haven’t seen in ten years, I’m unlikely to remember who they are unless they tell me.
It was Mark Hamill, but I think he did his best to sound the way he did around 1982. I think he did pretty well. The new dialogue did sound like Luke from the original movies, I thought.
His voice has changed somewhat, so he sounds kind of different in Episodes VIII and IX.
According to IMDB (so make of it what you will), Season 3 of The Mandalorian and Season 1 of The Book of Boba Fett are both premiering in December of 2021.
