Masking up (again) in the MMP

{{Quietly}}

My secondary school was a sprawly mess, with multiple buildings spread over several roads, with a sports field about 5 minutes walk away, but we were still supposed to stay onsite- in the main building- during breaks and free periods, even in the 6th form (optional at that point) unless all your teachers agreed that you were a Responsible straight A student.
I wasn’t- I didn’t even put in the request- so I used to slope out and go hang round the city library, figuring that a) that would be the last place anyone would look for truants, and b) I could probably argue a case for being there if anyone did find me.

That skool had some stoopit archaic rules.

It’s been on-and-off hammering it down with rain here today. I did go out earlier- a friend’s on holiday and asked me to keep an eye on their allotment; basically watering in the greenhouse and picking the courgettes (zucchini) before they take over the world. I’ve been keeping the house supplied with the things, but today was the last day I needed to go.

Hey, Shoe, reckon I can make a bong out of one?

Sure, why not?

Howdy all. Add me to the ‘rain pouring down outside’ group, it was cloudy this morning but we did play our U8 game (we lost, the other side had a minature Lionel Messi playing) and refereed my 10U game in a steady but not heavy rain. Right after we finished (about 11:30), they cancelled all the afternoon games, and with the thunder rolling around for the past hour or so, I think they were wise.

So home drying out.

FCM, chillage is under-rated…

Taters, glad Polar is back home, hope he keeps on the recovery path.

Sari, good job with the AT&T folks. Looks like you lucked out and got someone competent.

red, Italian and Salvadorian seems an unlikely combo, but sounds like it works for you.

OK, need to be about the afternoon with no soccer, so see what needs to be done. All y’all take care.

Mrs. L.A. was angry. She bought a new cat tree. When she assembled it, it was obviously way too small. It was like a ⅔ scale cat tree. She wanted to send it back. (We’ve just returned from the UPS Store). The seller charged her shipping, plus a restocking fee, PLUS they didn’t refund her $6.00 sales tax. So she’s only getting $30 back for her $66 cat tree.

Yesterday we took an Afternoon Sail on Lady Washington. In a normal year she would have made stops from Blaine, WA to San Diego, CA. This year they cancelled the Blaine sail after we bought tickets. We sailed out of Bellingham. I missed our turn, and just barely caught the boat. They’d already removed the gangplank and were casting off the lines. The crew were not dressed in their usual period costumes. It was slow going without much wind; between one and two miles per hour. After the two-hour sail, we went for Japanese food at our usual spot. We get a couple of large bottles of Asahi, but they weren’t serving alcohol because of a change in ownership and temporary lack of a license.

On the way to our sailing, Mrs. L.A. cleaned her glasses. When she put them back on she said, ‘I can see!’ I said, ‘Oh! That’s why you’re screaming!’ (I was driving.)

Howdy! It’s a little after 3pm here in lovely Northern Virginia, and I’ve been on my computer – putzing around online/with various files – for the past six hours. Totally not working on the proposal I need to work on (though I did boot up the work laptop!), and I only have a couple more hours before it’s time to shower and get ready for dinner and live jazz downtown. I haven’t spent any quality time on the couch with the dog yet, either. Poor neglected pooch, forced to nap in her dog bed instead of on the sofa…

It’s not that I felt that I should have posted, it’s that I like to post.

I had not even thought about that. :open_mouth:

…but que sera, sera.

This crap might mess with my plans to go to NYC next month, though. I’ve been planning a 4-day weekend in mid-Sept, complete with Yankee game tix (already purchased), but the uncle I’ll be spending most of my time with is a bit more risk-averse than I am when it comes to the virus…plus, I think hanging out in the city will be less fun with the reinstated masking requirements. (We’re both fully vaccinated, so there’s no issue there.) I emailed him yesterday, and said that if either of us starts to feel uncomfortable about spending a long weekend in the city I would definitely be open to a Plan B.

He and his family live on the Upper West Side, but when the pandemic hit they decamped to their “country house” a couple hours north of NYC (somewhere around the Poconos/Catskills…yeah, they have $). They’ve started going back to the city every now and then, so being in town while I’m there wouldn’t be a big deal, but they’re still mostly based out of the other house. Plan B could be going up there for the weekend.

I can cancel my hotel reservation any time before 9/13, so the only “thing” would be the Yankee game: I’ve been looking forward to it, and he’d be out the cost of the tickets. As of two months ago, though, the stadium is back at full capacity with no vaccination requirement – and masking is on the honor system, which makes me grumpy. If we opt for the country house I think the city might be too far away to go just for the game, but I’ll see what he thinks whenever he’s able to give me a call.

Yay!! I’m glad he’s sipping water and nibbling at kibble; good signs. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for the path report… :crossed_fingers:

I don’t remember the last time I sorted my clothes. Everything goes in one cold-water load. A few years ago I did start throwing in a Shout Color Catcher. I keep thinking that one of these days I’ll gather all of my whites and run a load with bleach, but so far I haven’t been bothered. I don’t even have any bleach.

I guess I should go do some work on this proposal. {sigh} Happy Saturday, all!

I know. But the first thing that came to mind is, “I’m okay, for now.” Which is exactly the opposite intent. The nearest hospital has already canceled elective surgeries, rather than waiting until they are overun. The numbers are increasing, and the mask compliance and vaccination rates have stagnated. The sameness is getting to me.

Despite earlier predictions, it seems that tomorrow will be only a minor washout and then next week’s weather should be reasonable. Not too hot, and not too wet.

Enjoying a glass of Japanese whisky in the glassed-in patio. Probably watch something weird on Netflix and go to bed. Excitement R us.

I’ve made dipping sauce for the leftover tempura. (Boil 1 cup water, add 1 tbsp dashi and simmer for a minute or two, remove from heat and add ¼ cup mirin and 2 tbsp soy sauce.)

Helped my buddy load a washing machine into and out of his truck this morning. They’re surprisingly heavy. We didn’t end up putting it into place, since his baby son has been in a disease incubator of day care and they all have a stomach bug so I wasn’t about to go into the house. Here’s to hoping I didn’t get it staying outside.

Now awaiting what hurricane Henri will send our way. We should be on the outskirts, but more rain is not needed around here. Hoping some trees don’t come down on the house or garage.

So I cleaned the fridge, kitchen counters, bathroom, and went to Lowes to finish off the washing nook storage, and bought a couple of towels at Tar-Jay. And I made myself a Vieux Carré.

Technically he has sorted them by color then. Although I do my whites separately.

I watched 2012 last night.

Yes, they are. And i heave heavy things for a living.

Evening all. The salad bag I bought which had an expiration date of today was soggy and spoiled, so it went in the disposal and I went to Olive Garden. So home stuffed and with 7-8 mints for my evening enjoyment.

Rain has pretty much cleared the area, but more is expected tonight. VanGo,, those Northeastern-hitting Hurricanes can be bad news; take care.

Oopsie, hope you can make it to the Yankee’s game; I think NYC is pretty-well vaccinated, but do what you feel safe in doing.

Flyboy, sounds like getting on the boat was more of an adventure that the trip itself.

OK, probably should call my brother and check in. All y’all have a good night.

Glad Polar is feeling a little better taters. May he continue to improve.

High school was my first experience with public school. We had an open campus and the Geneva Street parking lot was the one designated for student smokers (the teachers could do that in the teachers’ lounge). We would go to the Flagpole, Burger Dairy, Ho’s Chinese or the San Jose Market to grab a bite.

It rained here on and off all day, postponing the pool party to celebrate a friend’s birthday. I went into the city to Smart Art for their $30 basket sale. I walked out with ~$50 worth for that price. It’s a craft oriented thrift store benefitting job training programs. I SHOULD be donating instead of buying. :stuck_out_tongue:

Howdy Y’all! Much sloth ensued today. Go Us! I decided to make Nat.O.T. sallit instead of slaw for tomorrow so that got done. Also made up the baked beans. So, I managed some nonsloth today.

Taters glad Polar got to come home and is eatin’ and drinkin’ some.

Now I shall peruse teh intartoobz for a while before nitey nite.

My school had open campus, but only a small percentage of students had cars, primarily the rich kids, so most of us ate at the cafeteria. A friend and I sometimes walked to a little cemetery at lunchtime. I guess it sounds morbid, but we loved it because it was so tranquil. When you’re in a school so overcrowded, there are 4 shifts and no homerooms, you grab your serenity where you can find it. It was a big campus, but there were 4,000 kids. Today it’s an even bigger campus with less than 1/4 of that.

VanGo, you’re a good friend to your friend. Sacre bleu, I hope Henri spares you.

I solved the sorting business by not buying white clothing. My socks are black, my undies are …well, depends on the day of the week, but not white.

Serious question: do people in your line of work tend to develop back issues or knee problems or anything? Are there people who heave for many years?

Yes.

Also shoulder issues. Hubs was an autobody repair guy and his body is totally worn out, the poor guy.

The seniority list goes back to the mid 80’s, so people can make a career out of it. But if you don’t follow the safety rules, then you can screw up your back(or lose an arm). On the other had, I have a bad knee(semi dislocated it as a child, had a toddler headbut it at full speed, arthritis) and it doesn’t bother me a bit.

Yeah. That’s one of those jobs like EMS where you can’t always do a safe lift. :frowning:

The library doesn’t have the last 4 Anna Pigeon books, so I ordered them from thriftbooks. All 4, including tax, came to $17 And change. Not sure when I’ll get them but I hope it’s soon!

Meanwhile, bedtime.

Tour of a UPS 747-8
Although the air cans we get are 50% shorter than the one on this plane.

Added to the queue. Thanks!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN 'Tis 74 Amurrkin out and mostly clear (partly murky?) with a predicted high of 94 and a 70% chance of rain/tstorms/apocalypse. We shall see. The big plan of the day is deheathenization and then back to da cave for a N.O,L. of ribs, baked beans, N.O.T. sallit and garlic bread. Fartfest to follow. Once again I get to plop my behind in a pew and be amongst the rank and file.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then purtification for deheathenization must commence.

Happy Sunday Y’all!

Yanno, earworms are bad enough, but when it’s the theme song to a stoopid kid’s show and it’s running in your head while you’re trying to fall asleep… I’m trying to counter it with a local radio station that plays stuff I LOVE! Right now, it’s Spanky and Our Gang singing Sunday Will Never Be the Same. I love streaming!

Not sure what the day will hold - I’m still caffeinating, so not quite awake. I may have to venture to WalMart because I’m almost out of cat food, and that just won’t do. Or I’ll do it tomorrow while everyone is at work, so it’ll theoretically be less crazy. Dunno.

Today, my baby brother turns 65. Naturally, he’s getting a snarky e-card from me, because that’s how it works. Meanwhile, Roxy’s baby brother is definitely apparent within his mama’s person. Three months to go, and my daughter is quite large…

And so begins the day. An adventure waiting to happen.

Happy Sunday!
