May 12 NYC Dopefest Weekend: Up to the Upper West Side

thinksnow:

You’d most likely fly into Laguardia Airport. From there, you can get a cab to the Upper West Side for about $25 dollars (toll and tip included)… Or if any dopers are coming in from Long Island, they might be able to swing by.

As for crashing places and hotels, here’s a website with some NYC hotels. I’m not sure what the final count of people staying with us is gonna be, but I’m sure there’d be room for one more

Maeglin and I are planning on seeing the Mummy Returns on Friday the 11th at 9 PM at the Loews “E-Walk” Theater on 42nd and 8th.

Tickets are $10 a pop.

If anyone would like to join us, please send us an email!

We’ll be meeting up at the theater at 8:30 PM.

Saturday Afternoon Sightseeing: Upper West Side Highlights
Meet at Billdo’s apartment on West 72nd Street at 1:00 p.m. (please be prompt)
E-mail Billdo (Billdo@nyc.rr.com) for his address and directions and to let him know you’ll be coming.

We’ll start with a short walk through Central Park. We’ll then pay an extended visit to the American Museum of Natural History. After the museum we’ll walk over to Broadway, where we’ll see some West Side institutions like Zabars, the Beacon Theater, Fairway, the Ansonia, and, time and interest permitting, head all the way down to Lincoln Center. We’ll then go back to Billdo’s apartment for light refreshments and head to dinner from there.

Sunday Brunch: Bagel Brunch at Billdo’s
A New York City brunch at Billdo’s apartment from 11 a.m. to around 2 p.m.
Contact Billdo (Billdo@nyc.rr.com) for his address and directions and to let him know you’ll be coming.

After brunch you can stop by the West 77th Street Sunday Flea Market, or perhaps someone will arrange another sightseeing trip to a NYC attraction.

DIRECTIONS:

Driving: See first post in thread.

Flying: Fly into LaGuardia, J.F.K., or Newark. Ground transportation options can be found on Port Authority website, and include taxi, bus service to midtown, and the Supershuttle van service (recommended for relatively cheap, door-to-door service).

Subway: Take 1 train to 79th Street or B/C train to 81st Street/Museum of Natural History.

Sending it back to the top…

The good news:

I got a job in NY, starting the 21st.

The bad news:

I’m not going to have enough time to pack and get to NY before the DopeFest on Saturday, so unfortunately, you’ll have to take my name off the probable list.

The next bit of good news:

I’ll be there in spirit and I’ll be in the area now for the next one!!! (Which I won’t miss!)

Favors to ask of any female Dopers, if lurker goes… kiss him for me! Please!!! I won’t be able to for a week, and, since that will be a nice way for my spirit to be there…

Also, any Dopers that feel up to the challenge, kiss Falc for me, too. I’d do that at least once if I were there, too!

Falc, not that I really have to ask but… play the flirt for me? I was so looking forward to this, too…

Oldscratch couldn’t get his check in time. So - without availible funds at the moment - he had to cancel.

No need to cry, I’m still gonna come up. See you all Saturday!

BTW, I’m trying to decide whether to take the train or drive up. How much are parking garages in upper Manhattan for a day. I searched around online but couldn’t find any information. $30?

Silo - try like $50, from what I’ve heard.

Damnit! I want to come sooo bad! (I’m absolutely whining, folks.) I have four papers to write for next week, plus three finals to study for (I hate the professers who give final exams AND final papers). I also have a lot of reading - such is the life of the English major.

Maybe we can plan another sometime in August? Is the Thursday Bar thing still happening? Now that school is almost over for the semester, I can pop up on a Thursday sometime.

I really, really hope everyone has a good time! But all the beautiful babes in attendence better keep their paws of Lux Fiat, or I’ll beat 'em up.

I’ve told Pucette, but I’ll say it here too: as quickly as I thought I might be in, I’m out.
Now the Nor Cal meets So Cal looks promising, and let’s not forget Dopapalooza. One of these days, I’m going to coordinate an Ohio Dopefest, too.

It may take a bit of time, but you can usually find on-street parking in my neighborhood (West 70’s). It’s probably even easier up by Pucette (and the garages there are a bunch cheaper then those in the 70’s).

Driving is probably not a bad option, particularly if you’re coming in Friday night or Saturday morning. It gets tougher late Saturday. E-mail me with when you’re coming and where you’d like to stash your car, and I may be able to give you some more specific advice.

Silo - there are a couple parking garages right near our apartment, as well as oodles of street parking. We’ll check it out tonight if you like.

See y’all soon!

<looks around to make sure no one is looking>

[sub]bump[/sub]

<scampers off>

Brrrrrump-bump!

SO WHERE the hell am I supposed to meet everybody again tomorrow?

What? The UPPER WEST SIDE? Oh, jesus.

I will see you all tomorrow night, definitely for the after dinner drinks. Probably for dinner too. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Grok

You’re coming Grok? Do you live/teach in the NYC area? Where?

Oh, waitaminit, I can ask you all of this tomorrow.

I’ll be staying at the Belleclaire Hotel, 250 W 77th, under the name Xavier T. Anka; probably checking in about noon-ish. I won’t have the computer w/ me this time, so I can’t check e-mail and such for updates.

I have an early train in the morning, so I’ll check once more (between 5:30/6:00 AM) before departing for any last minute updates.

See ya’s!

I’m alive! At least, I think I am. Finals are done, at any rate. I’m trying to find the information and have as yet been unsuccessful: can I pay for any of the parking garages with a credit card, or will I need cash?

** Dammit to hell**. My Monday shoot was shifted- PROBABLY <grrr> to tonight somewhere in NYC. They won’t TELL me where yet, it’s a trade secret. Jerks.

Anyway, I’ll note the location of the dinner and try like heck to make an appearance, even if it means I show up rather sweaty and underdressed. I will, however, be wearing my immense “Miss America” type banner declaring “Cartooniverse”. Beats name tags

I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it. I’m really sorry.

. . . And a good time was had by all.

'See y’all at brunch at Billdo’s.
