Chicken far more than anything else. Beef as the occasional burger or meatball sandwich or very rarely as a steak, some pork in sausage or pepperoni on pizza.
Everything else varies between a couple times a year to never eaten at all.
Chicken, mostly because it’s cheaper.
This. Beef is my favorite of things that are easily available, but I mostly eat chicken.
I love chicken, can eat it a LOT. And that’s what I chose. I love seafood, but expense-lack of freshness puts it on the back burner. Also, I was spoiled growing up and caught-cooked fresh trout and smelt, and…it’s just not the same as getting it elsewhere. (Also spoiled by home-grown tomatoes).
But when I want beef, I REALLY REALLY WANT IT!!
Pork, I think I crave the least…except for bacon. And sausage. And posole. I have eaten more pork since moving to heavily-latin-influenced SO-CAL than I have eaten during the last 45 years of my life, total. I’m not exaggerating even a little.
Ok that cracked me up; I might have to use that. ![]()
And, because of said previous joke, I actually read this as ‘Pork, with children in second place’. WAY TO GO!!! :smack:
Ha, I was going to say ‘This’ to this but then this:
…was directly below, so actually, ‘This’.
Wish I could afford more beef, but it’s actually better for me that chicken is so cheep (get it?) I have a chest freezer, so if I find thighs on sale for .79/lb, or whole chickens for .99/lb I stock up. Found b/s breasts for $1.49/lb the other day and you can bet your ass I loaded up.
Red meat, the redder the better.
beef, with chicken a very close second. Porcine products, particular ham, pork and bacon are not far behind that.
I voted beef, but we consume a similar amount of chicken (as well as fish if you count the entire seafood world under that one umbrella). I also have a small turkey sandwich for lunch most weekdays, so that’s up there too. Pork, lamb, and ‘real’ turkey once or twice a month each. We’re pretty carnivorous.
When I eat meat at ALL, it’s chicken about half the time, followed by fish/pork (mainly ham)/beef the other half. I don’t do hamburger. I will order steak on occasion at a restaurant. It’s not that I don’t like a nice piece of beef, like pot roast during the winter, but I looked at a flank steak yesterday - $23!!! Still, when I fire up the grill this summer, gotta put something on it other than Bar-S hot dogs!
Definitely pork and simply because Big Y frequently has pork roasts and pork loin on buy one get two free sales and we have a chest freezer. We also really like kielbasa so we usually have that every other week or so. Oh and we won a shingle of bacon at a meat raffle so until those 18 pounds are gone, we eat a lot of bacon too.
Chicken is a not so close second because of the same sale, which doesn’t seem to strike as frequently with the poultry.
Very distant from chicken is beef in the form of steak or hamburger because it’s so freakin’ expensive.
Dead last is turkey, which is depressing because it’s my absolute favorite meat. We get it as lunch meat but I don’t eat lunch meat often so we tend to get ham more because my boyfriend prefers it.
Like a lot of other people in this thread, I was thinking pork, chicken and beef were evenly split.
Then I remembered to consider breakfast…
Pork it is.
No love for goat? According to the New York Times:
Africa and Asia alone have a goat population of over 800 million, according to Wikipedia.
I wonder why it’s never really caught on in the U.S. Sorry if this is a hijack.
Actually that was part of the inspiration for this thread, and why goat was included in the poll.
I do like me some goat, but it’s generally only available in ethnic restaurants or special-ordered from a butcher, around my are at least. Definitely not something that the neighborhood supermarket carries, and I would expect that to be the case in a lot of cities in the US.
I think that goat is not popular in the US because (urbanized) Americans generally prefer meat that is mild-tasting and cooks quickly. Probably a different story the further you get from a large metropolis.
I’m the only one so far for “other game” - elk.
Actually, I think beef and chicken and elk are nearly tied. Not much pork except in the pork green chili and the bacon. Oh, the bacon.
Chicken by a long shot, followed by pork, fish, turkey, and beef. The SO’s family raises chickens and a couple of pigs every year (they’ve raised beef in the past, but it’s been too expensive recently), so we’ve usually got a freezer full of locally-raised, delicious meat. As long as we remember to take food out the day before we want to eat it, we’re golden.
cardinal_fang, you’ll be happy to hear that they’re considering a few goats for next year. I’ve eaten a lot of goat in Central and South America, and I’m really hoping they go for it.
Chicken, just because it’s easy to keep little packets of frozen chicken thighs in the house, and so many things to do with them. Oh, and price, and health considerations to a certain extent. We’d probably eat a lot more fish and shellfish if there were somewhere near home to buy them super-fresh, but as it is, they are largely restricted to consumption shortly after the weekly major grocery run.
We do like beef and pork, but when we want to cook something that requires a certain amount of effort, it tends to be lamb (usually leg chops, because they have the best price/meat ratio).
I like all kinds of other things too (quail, venison, etc.) but they tend to be not so commonly available fresh, and/or much more expensive than other options.
Chicken by a large margin, then beef. I wish we ate lamb more often but it’s too expensive these days. We have pork infrequently, and fish rarely (almost exclusively in the form of fish and chips from the takeaway shop).
We get our goat fix in the Caribbean each year on vacation. Can’t find any here. We have considered raising a few for slaughter, but my gf is a self admitted hypocritical carnivore.![]()
