I expect that the cross-dressing started early in his career, before he was known and when he needed some sort of gimmick to stand out. It’s probably hung on through tradition, but he doesn’t need it any more. My first exposure to him was an audio-only track, so I had no idea he was wearing a dress, and he was still absolutely hilarious.

Actually, from memory it’s almost the opposite. I seem to remember him playing down the dressing in the early years. Whether that’s true or not, he’s been consistent in his explanation that “action transvestatism” is who he is, not a hook to differentiate him.

Yes, I saw him do stand up in the early 90s, when his normal stage attire was a denim shirt and chinos. He looked pretty square.
