Tonight I caught the last half of a comedy program on HBO. It was obviously a person of British persuasion… you know, accent and all :). When I first tuned in I was thinking… WTF? Is this guy supposed to be in womens clothes? Because I thought… well it could go either way in some crowds, but he doesnt act feminine at all. But then… thats full female makeup. HOWEVER, aside from that, this guy was so fucking funny I couldnt believe it. I cracked my ass off for about 15 min before he finally mentioned something in passing about crossdressers being mostly attraced to women. Then I listened to the rest of the show in hysterics because this person was so fucking funny it was unbelieveable and no he never mentioined sexuality or crossdressing again.
I was like, “who is this guy??? He is so fucking funny, like nothing I’ve seen in a long time.” At the end credits the only thing I recognized was exectuve producer Eddie Izzard. Now I recognize the name Eddie Izzard only from this board Where I have heard it in passing as a comedian before. Was this the same comedian?
I know what I’m gonna go put on right now. God I love that guy.
The funniest thing ever was my dad trying to describe Eddie Izzard to me before I’d ever heard of him. He was like “I saw the funniest comedian on TV last night… he was this British transvestite, and he was hilarious!”
He’s in drag for Glorious, too. But Dressed to Kill is, IMHO, way funnier. Did he run about like a giraffe whenever the audience didn’t laugh at a joke? If so, it’s Glorious. If you recognize the following, it’s Dressed to Kill:
“Britain!”
“Whaaat?”
“What’s that behind your back?”
“Oh, it’s Innnndia and a number of other countries.”
“Give 'em back…”
“Oh, fine. Here you are, there you go…”
“And what’s that one?”
“Oh, that’s the Falkland Islands. We NEED the Falkland Islands for stratigic sheep purposes!”
I made my dad, the Vietnam Vet, watch the bit about how transvestites ought to be allowed to be in the military, for the surprize element.
“Whaaaaat the bloody hell is thaaat?..Oh, shit, they’ve got guns! Quick, get your guns!”
Eddie Izzard rules! We saw him live in Seattle - a show that hasn’t shown up on video yet. We have the other four shows that are available on video - seen them many times, show them to friends and make Izzard converts every time.
I first found Eddie in the HBO show and love it. Still catch it now and then. (Noted that it was on last night was would have watched it except for not being near a cable tv.)
But what really wowed me was Eddie in “Mystery Men.” Every time I watch that I can’t believe that is really him. Everybody else, from Ricky “I’m a publicist not a magician” Jay to Lena Olin to Louise Lasser is instantly recognizable. But not Eddie.
You can get videos of Eddie in action on Amazon. Not sure if they work outside of Her Majesty’s Commonwealth though.
I have several and have seen him at least a dozen times. I think he’s the best comedian since Tommy Cooper.
BTW that was all said in a James Mason voice
My god!! I love Eddie Izzard. He is the best comedian ever. Really. When my SO first told me that I had to watch Glorious I was skeptical, and hour later I knew he was right and was in love. He is so hilarous. Did anyone else see him play Charlie Chaplin in “the cats meow”?? It was a good movie and he’s an excellent actor as well as a comedian.
Love it.
