My goodness, what a tragedy this case is. I feel for Natalee’s parents, who had to wait so long for some kind of disclosure (at least knowing their daugher is dead), and I feel for the people of Aruba, who have felt the decline in US tourism (the island fully depends upon it).
The Sunday night Peter R. de Vries show was the most watched program in Dutch history. An estimated 7 million people watched it, out of a total population of 16 million. To give you some perspective, a world cup soccer final gets about 6 million. It was huge.
I’m no real fan of Peter R. de Vries, he’s a bit of a sensationalist IMHO. Having said that, he succeeded where the Aruban authorities failed. He got Joran to confess at least something.
Creditibility is key here: this kid’s been lying since 2005. Still, I think we can at least conclude Joran wasn’t an innocent bystander. If she just (seemingly) died in his arms, any innocent person would have dialed the emergency number.
So, my idea is, he slipped her something and it went bad. He panicked, and disposed of her body. It is questionable whether he used an accomplice for this. The earmarked Daury seems to be a scapegoat, and the alledged payphone at the Marriot was a credit card only type. A 17 year old would be unlikely to carry a CC, and moreover, such a transaction could have been checked.
The greatest crime this shithead has committed, is obscuring the truth from her parents for nearly three years. Those poor people.
As far as a conviction, if it ever happens, it might be shockingly low. In abcense of a body, the most they might put on him is “making a body disappear” (or words to that effect), for which the Aruban/Dutch term is 2 years. Subtract the detention he’s already served, and you might be left with less than a year.
There’s no winners in this, that much is certain.
