Natalie Holloway

My goodness, what a tragedy this case is. I feel for Natalee’s parents, who had to wait so long for some kind of disclosure (at least knowing their daugher is dead), and I feel for the people of Aruba, who have felt the decline in US tourism (the island fully depends upon it).

The Sunday night Peter R. de Vries show was the most watched program in Dutch history. An estimated 7 million people watched it, out of a total population of 16 million. To give you some perspective, a world cup soccer final gets about 6 million. It was huge.

I’m no real fan of Peter R. de Vries, he’s a bit of a sensationalist IMHO. Having said that, he succeeded where the Aruban authorities failed. He got Joran to confess at least something.

Creditibility is key here: this kid’s been lying since 2005. Still, I think we can at least conclude Joran wasn’t an innocent bystander. If she just (seemingly) died in his arms, any innocent person would have dialed the emergency number.

So, my idea is, he slipped her something and it went bad. He panicked, and disposed of her body. It is questionable whether he used an accomplice for this. The earmarked Daury seems to be a scapegoat, and the alledged payphone at the Marriot was a credit card only type. A 17 year old would be unlikely to carry a CC, and moreover, such a transaction could have been checked.

The greatest crime this shithead has committed, is obscuring the truth from her parents for nearly three years. Those poor people.

As far as a conviction, if it ever happens, it might be shockingly low. In abcense of a body, the most they might put on him is “making a body disappear” (or words to that effect), for which the Aruban/Dutch term is 2 years. Subtract the detention he’s already served, and you might be left with less than a year.

There’s no winners in this, that much is certain. :frowning:

This may vary between countries, but I think someone can be tried even if the body never turns up, if there’s enough evidence to prosecute.

I’m commenting based on the statements I’ve heard on TV by experts on Aruban law. Apparently, there’s not much they can convict Van der Sloot on in lieu of a body turning up.

I do not think there is enough evidence to conclude that. I do not think there is even enough evidence to conclude that he was there. There are real holes in this “confession.” Plus we know that Joran was planning to start a secret criminal enterprise with this guy he confessed to. He may have just been trying to show that he could keep his mouth shut to the authorities.

There’s plenty of holes in his confession: he’s a pathological liar.

Still, admitting to something you didn’t do, while you’ve been hounded over that very issue for nearly 3 years, just to impress a potential buddy-in-crime? I rank him stupid, but not that stupid.

People do stupider stuff all the time. And I am not saying that is what happened. I am just saying we cannot conclude that it did not.

You sound like a lawyer.

Now, now, no need to get nasty, is there?

The former.

I am a terrible, terrible person. Twisted and sick for sure.

My first thought after reading this story was the same one as my brother’s after we watched the movie The Musketeer; which he blurted out far too loudly in the closing scene.

Horse and carriage, rolling down a qauint French road. Both the movie’s hero and love interest safely inside after hero has saved the day. Fade to black… house lights in the cinema come up.

My brother shouts, “So did they DO it?!”

Scummy people bragging to others about crimes they did not commit in order to impress them is not uncommon, especially if you are a wanna be badass wanting to “prove” to someone you’re cool and trustworthy. Stupid, but not uncommon- two of the West Memphis 3 supposedly bragged about a killing they may not have committed.

I dont know much about the story so I’m just rattling off some random thoughts until I can research it more…

Joran panics because of who his father is and:
Joran gets rid of the body knowing that he’ll get away with it (because of who his father is?) and figures noone would link him to the missing girl? Of course he’s not going to call for help no matter if innocent or not simply because of who he is and who his father is.

Joran is used to getting what he wants no matter how, and no matter how intelligent he is, His arrogance feeds on his stupidity and there will be a time when it will catch up to him. The more things he gets away with, the more arrogant he becomes, and the sloppier he’ll get.

Ok - I’ll do some research tomorrow and catch up on the story (sorry, dont watch a lot of TV).

If anybody here watches Nancy Grace you might understand where I’m coming from. I can’t stand the bitch but drawn to watch her as she goes ballistic replaying Joran’s confession, especially where Joran repeatedly refers to Natalie as a bitch etc.

I’m sick I know, but for Nancy’s sake I hope Joran continues to evade justice.

I hope for the Holloway family that he doesn’t continue to evade justice.

There is no way in hell they’ll ever get a conviction without any supporting evidence.
Maybe they will be able to start a civil suit but since Joran isn’t a US resident he doesn’t have to show up, does he?
I think he will get away with it but he will need to move to another country because he will need permanent security if he stays in the Netherlands.

I dislike the Holloway family for the way they have handled themselves and the things they have said about Aruba, it’s law enforcement and it’s people. I am not presuming to tell grieving parents how to think, feel or act, but I abhor the choices they have made.

I am usually the last one to “blame the victim” but good lord- I was damned lucky not to end up just like her as a teen. As a petite woman, I am at a disadvantage right away in terms of actually defending myself against someone who wants to harm me. Mix in some booze to lower both my inhibitions and good sense, and you’ve got a recipe for assault/rape/whatever. As a woman, I needed to learn that I was placing myself in dangerous positions and rolling the dice. Hell yes it was going to be at least partially my fault for putting myself there with no real defense.

Sorry about your pretty (but stupid) white girl. Sorrier still for the girls who no one hears about and no one mourns.

The super-evil bad guy killer in Tad Williams Otherland series had a mantra he used to help himself avoid screwups: “Confident, Cocky, Careless, Dead.”

Really? I wouldn’t think people in your neck of the woods would care about some stupid American chick…

You are the wind beneath my tiny little flipper-like appendages.

Sorry you’re such a black-hearted cunt. And in what fucked-up world do you hold her looks and skin color against her, as not being as worthy of your sorrow? As despicable as I find you, I hope you never find out how you would handle things if you were in the same situation as the Holloways.
