Just venting. I called today to cancel my rather pricey local newspaper subscription. I wanted to support local journalism, but it’s expensive and frankly, not all that good. Of course, to cancel, I had to call and speak to a human at a call center somewhere. She offered me a lower rate. No thanks, and why didn’t you offer that rate before? After much back and forth, she said she’d leave a note, and I should call back a week before the expiration date if I still want to cancel. Aaargh! I said, “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to argue, but you keep pushing this, and I really just want to cancel right now for when the subscription expires.” Supposedly that’s been done, but since it was via phone, there’s no record.
flyboy, good for you for getting booster #2! Hope you don’t get any side effects whatsoever.
If I were in that situation, I’d probably send a letter on the subject, with signature required or whatever postal add-on you would want to use if you have to prove they got the letter if you wind up having to dispute any further charges with your bank. I’m suspicious that someone won’t bother to actually process your cancellation, either from laziness or not wanting to take a ding on subscriber retention numbers. Yes, I can be a bit on the paranoid side.
Took a nap earlier, and Buddy was very diligent about helping me with this. He does seem to be learning to leave a little bed space for the human :). Just about the time I was waking up, Allie very cautiously came up the side of the bed because she wanted snuggles. Had to get within inches of Buddy, but she did, and allowed herself to be snuggled close enough that her tail could touch him. Once she was done getting hugged, she moved a little away and was loafing on the side of the bed a few inches from him. He’s getting a bit pouncy with her lately (I think it’s just that he wants to play), but he was asleep when Allie joined us.
ETA: I’d thought I’d get Booster II in May, six months after my first one. Then I thought, ‘I’ll just wait until June. Maybe around my birthday.’ So I was going to get shot last week, but I forgot. Wifey, RN’s positive patient (whose house she went to, but whom she didn’t treat because of the positive status) reminded me, so I made a point of going to the pharmacy for ‘lunch’.
We had a t-boomer come thru earlier that scared the crap out of me. I was in the basement with the kids and I truly thought FCD had fallen and pulled some furniture over - it was that loud and floor-rattling! I charged upstairs to check on him…
Kids have gone home and it’s quiet again. Quiet is good.
Election day went very smoothly! I hadn’t worked an election in a year, though: I’d forgotten what’s like to have the alarm go off at 3am. I left the house at just before 4:30am, and got home right around 8:30pm. One wonderful thing about working June elections is that the sun is still up when we leave the polling place! I watched TV for about an hour, then crashed. I slept pretty well and for a good amount of time, but I’m still feeling it a bit today: work was nonstop, and I hit a wall at around 3pm. Luckily, I got caught up shortly afterwards and was able to log off early.
It was only a Democratic primary yesterday, and we got less than 100 voters, so there was plenty of time for all of us to sit around and chat. Thankfully, it was a good group of folks. And it turns out the chief judge had the same surgery as me three years ago, with the same surgeon! He lost more than 200 pounds; we wound up talking quite a bit. It was really nice to meet someone who is so far post-op and doing great.
Apparently, Virginia is fixin’ to start allowing same-day voter registration. The November election is going to be…interesting.
A Google search brought up an old reddit thread where someone had that exact question, and they think the difference is that the blue “roasted” bag has extra oil…?
I’ve got way more little creatures in the back yard since I no longer have a dog patrolling the yard. This dude was about 8 feet from the kitchen window. Pic through a screen, hence the fuzziness.
Yesterday, sitting on the porch, a couple of chipmunks got within 2 feet of me.
I’m looking to adopt a new pup sometime soon. I have a gig where I might need to go to not my shop for a couple of days, so I’m waiting til after that. Don’t want to leave a new puppy alone for 8 hours.
oopsie, my mom used to sit elections too. I remember going with her before I was even in school. One of her friends or her sister would come get me after an hour or two, but it exposed me to political interest for a lifetime.
Youse guys are so funny! I’m seriously cracking up!
Hubs was right that I get ticked off when people throw trash in our yard, but then, I get ticked off when people throw their trash out of their car no matter where they are. Especially lit cigarette butts.
In the spirit of being kind, it’s possible that the young people hadn’t been drinking that day and hit the stop sign because they were distracted by the across the street neighbor’s new dog:
Except for the part where they ended up in handcuffs. Hitting stop signs and littering isn’t a handcuff worthy offense.
swampie, we will be milking more entertainment out of this cause now we get to watch the stop sign being fixed. Every time it gets hit they do things to make it more obvious that it’s there. They have moved it once, replaced it twice and have hung so many reflectors that it twinkles all night.
The excitement never ends!
Please, please, oh PLEASE ask me to share my collection with you. I love those things, I can remember finding the real chic tracts in public restrooms and I’d like them even if I wasn’t a cultist.
You are allowed to be angry with people who play games. I’m so sorry you are dealing with this on top of everything else.
You are doing very well on the taking care of everyone else around you part, but it seems as though you have forgotten about taking care of yourself. That’s really important because if you go down there will be nobody to take care of everyone else.
Oh good lord. You have my sincere sympathy.
I’m sorry Taz is starting to fail FCM. It’s always hard.
Evening all. Swimmin’ was later than I usually go, so only did 30 minutes in the pool as there was a waiting line (only 4 lanes there). Sweated some more out in the Sauna an the scale says I’m down another pound from Monday, so I’ll believe it…
My travel agent buddy who organized the Alaska trip is looking at a 2-week Panama Canal cruise in November 2023, which might take place during Thanksgiving, but on the other hand is pretty dirt-cheap. So yeah, I’ll be listening.
Oopsie, good on you for helping, I’ve thought about volunteering at times, but really not much into politics, so hard to get motivated. Didn’t vote yesterday as the Republican is going to win the Senate seat anyway and neither candidate inspires much confidence in me. Such is life.
nellie, I agree with Nettie, paranoia is not bad when they really are out to get you…a letter or a request for a e-mail/document would not be a bad idea.
OK, had a Pepsi and an Apple about an hour ago, so need to fix something more substantial here in a bit. All y’all take care.
So did mine. I remember her being an election officer when I was in high school; I think she eventually wound up being a chief judge. She hadn’t done it for many years before she died, though.
I don’t care much about politics, either, but I do care about everyone who wants to vote — and is eligible to vote — being able to vote. Doesn’t matter how they do it, when they do it, who they vote for, etc. It definitely helps that we aren’t allowed to discuss candidates or political issues while working.
Despite my mother’s involvement when I was younger, being an election officer wasn’t anything I ever thought about doing myself until 2020: around June/July, I saw a couple of headlines about how most election officers are retired but many of them were likely to skip the November election because of COVID. There was a chance of a national election officer shortage, and it was kind of an important election, so that prompted me to sign up.
Howdy Y’all! We procured provisions and pigged out at the hog trough GC. That was the extent of the excitatement. We have been inside in the a/c with no thought whatsoever about bein’ outside. Just too dang hawt!
Bumba hope the kids can pull the money together, but iff’n they can’t, hope someone is on deck who can. I know y’all just want this over.
MOOOOOOM Like Taters I remember when y’all got Taz. Hard to believe it’s been this long.
sari sorry your mom is bein’ a PITA, but bein’ ill is no excuse for stirrin’ up trouble.
JtC waaaaaaaaaaay back durin’ my mispent youth, I was in possession of a couple hunnert Chic tracts. I used ‘em as callin’ cards. I would leave notes for friends on 'em and always remind them to check the box or they would burn in hell. This amused me greatly. Why, yes, I have always been beyond weird, why do you ask?
I gathered up all I could find but didn’t think up anything neat to do with them. One day Mom found them and was horrified cause God is all about love, not hate. She wouldn’t listen my half formed opinions about having them and stood over me while I tore them up and threw them in the trash. From then on, I didn’t bring them home. I just tore them up and threw them in the trash so I guess we both achieved our objectives.
Well, damn. I got word that my daughter’s godfather died. He was a colleague of mine. We were the only two teachers who dressed in business formal attire for work. He wore a suit and tie, I wore dresses (except on Fridays, when we had to wear team shirts and if the temp was well below zero). He helped my daughter with her math homework long before she hit HS, and he always had a friendly hug for me. I had both of his kids in my classes. And his wife is a lovely person.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. It’s been rainy and breezy all night, and the power has been flickering. Almost like I live in some Third World country like Texas.
Ah, the smooth coated Cretaceous Retriever. Smart, but prone to nipping hands.
No, that’s a reasonable reason to be angry. {{{{sari}}}}
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 76 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 102 and N.O.S. for the day. A good day to stay inside in the a/c though I do predict some quality cee-mint pond time at some point. OYKW has a gnawin’ and a cravin’, so we shall N.O,L. at the not too shabby Chinese hog trough buffet. Any other need to feed will be via forage.
Nellie sorry about your friend/daughter’s godfather.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah,
Holy cow - I actually slept till my alarm went off!! Been a while since that happened! I got something over 7 hours! And the peasants rejoiced!
It rained pretty much all night - nice and steady and quiet - no t-boomers. We figure our lawn will be hip-high in a day or two. I’m not going to think about all the weeds that are flourishing, too. Plus it’s supposed to rain on and off all day, maybe getting into the low 70s.
Roxy’s school got a visit from a petting zoo - yet another thing I love about that school! And no, she wasn’t in any of those pics.
After I’m free of the kids this afternoon, my car goes into the shop for an oil change, an a/c charge and (probably) an alignment. I’m hoping it’ll all get done tomorrow, but they may not get it back to me till Moanday. They’ve been soooooo busy of late. Thankfully, we don’t need my car over the weekend.
Theoretically, a nice, quiet day. Which I just jinxed. Happy Thursday!
Morning all. I seem to have a 7-hour sleep cycle now, bed at 11pm and up about 6am. Would rather it be 9 hours, but we’ll see. Got garbage out last night but the shredder apparently blew something (stopped shredding and gave several loud bangs before stopping completely), so may have to go looking for a new one. Not a drop of rain to be seen and 93F for the high, so while we’re not in drought conditions, it’s pretty hard on the yard.
JtC, curious, is that really a model at your neighbor’s or just a pic you found? Because it is wonderful…
nellie, sorry about the daughter’s godfather passing on. Time always wins.
swampy, I can only remember being handed a Chick tract once when I was in my teens. Thought it was weird (I was a good Catholic boy then) and tossed it. So guess I know where I’m going…
OK, pills taken so some morning internettin’ and then edibles. All y’all take care.
