Presumably, you know what I meant.
Really the whole “lame duck” period in US politics is a uniquely American flaw in how the government is run.
Why in hell would you even risk letting the loser of an election pass more laws before they leave office?
Maybe this made sense 200 years ago when the fastest means of travel was by horseback, but these days, it’s utterly nonsensical.
How would you suggest this be changed? Have the loser immediately stripped of office or what?
In parliamentary governments, the legislature is put into recess before election day, and doesn’t reconvene until after the new legislature is sworn in. People like Prime Ministers and the cabinet members still have authority over routine day-to-day government operations, and emergency powers, but they don’t enact any new policies.
This works well in lots of other countries.
What if they were no long allowed to sign bills into law that would limit the powers of the incoming governor?
Both of those ideas work for me.
But but but… American Exceptionalism!
Yeah, but those are [ThelmaLou holds nose and makes a face] S-s-s-socialist countries. By definition, whatever works for them can’t possibly work here in God’s country.
[Slo-mo ninja…]
While we’re at it, no executive pardons in the lame-duck period, either.
Darth Santis is now claiming he won’t assist in extraditing Inmate 1 because SOROS BAD.
Query: Given George Soros’s $32+ billion of donations to the Open Society Foundation so far, is there any Democrat in elective office anywhere in the US who can’t be described as to some extent “Soros-backed”?
It’s like calling a Republican office-holder “Koch-funded”. AFAICT, at this point that’s basically just a synonym for “Republican”.
If Ron is smart, he’s let Donald know that he’ll block the extradition only so long as Trump pulls out of the election, and doesn’t tell anyone about the deal.
Fighting the extradition to Manhattan would be about the dumbest thing Trump could do.
At best, he’d be able to delay the Manhattan arraignment until the FBI moves on Trump for a real arrest, complete with frogmarch, handcuffs and orange jumpsuit, for documents/January 6th cases. Trump will have demonstrated with Bragg’s case that he can’t be trusted to appear when he says he will, so Jack Smith won’t offer him any courtesies.
Bragg’s case will wait until the Feds are done with him, but they’ll just turn him over when they’re ready. And Trump will have amassed a whole lot more charges from Manhattan by then.
Meanwhile, in what I’m sure is a complete coincidence, the FL legislature introduced a bill today that would repeal the requirement for the governor to resign before running for another office.
Don’t tease like that!
My comment on that in another thread:
It’s not like Missouri Reps were actually using them so…
