NEW Stupid Republican Idea of the Day (Part 3)

Even turkeys wish for a quick death when forced to listen to that.

The problem is that the we in “couldn’t we choose our own fuel price if we produced all our oil domestically” is not the we that buys fuel it’s the we that sells fuel.

Right.
The thing is, the US does produce enough oil to fulfill domestic demand.

But:

  1. A lot of US oil is shale, which is not an ideal source for making gasoline, therefore it makes sense for the US to export oil to countries that prefer that density mix, and import light crude
  2. Since oil is readily transportable, it makes no sense for oil companies to charge US consumers less than they could abroad (ok, US consumers could get a slight discount for having cheaper transportation costs).
It would make as much sense as selling your car for a super low price because everyone on your street is poor and you’ve self limited yourself to selling only to people on your street.
In fact it’s more stupid, because America is a wealthy country.

But, alas, it’s easier to tell a lie than to explain why it’s wrong.

And of course, the whole thing could be simplified (and cost American consumers less) if we’d just drastically reduce our energy usage. Which we could, without any significant impact on our quality of life. But we don’t, because Reasons.

I think it’s because of the constitutional amendment titled “You Can’t Fuckin’ Tell Me What To Do”

It’s worth pointing out that, when Canada tried to do this back in the 70s, the Albertans absolutely freaked out at the suggestion that they should maybe give their fellow Canadians a break on oil prices. Said Albertans are still bent out of shape over this, and are also currently in love with Trump and the GOP.

Go Figure.

my thoughts flashed to that incident. that was some crazy stuff.

Me, too.

Alberta is known to be the Texas of Canada. I mean, look, that is where Rafael is from.

what about other drugs? … are the dogs not allowed to sniff for other drugs? do they have a dog union that

Are you suggesting that these brave police dogs are Democrats?!?

No, no, police unions are OK. As long as the union supports them when they bite suspects.

Singing, “Bite Through the Union Label!”

Main difference is Alberta is friendlier to the US.

eyyyy … commie!!!

you not takin my F250 powastroke from me - because … ammandmenz!!!

Look, several regular posters here are Albertan, including myself. Most Albertans I know think Trump is a joke.

I generally avoid political discussions because in person because it just isn’t productive. From experience I generally assume I am significantly to the left of the typical Canadian, let alone Albertan. But I really don’t find too many Trump supporters, maybe they just keep their mouths shut. The only one I can think of is a former coworker who I don’t see anymore. I hear lots of people make jokes about Trump.

I have a good, old friend from university that has gone pretty far right. He is oil patch. He thinks Ezra Levant is a measured intellectual. I assume he voted for Danielle Smith. But he still thinks Donald Trump is a fascist.

The NEP seemed like a good idea at the time from certain angles but it was thrust on westerners at a time of already insane interest rates. A lot of people were financially ruined. Middle class people that lost everything. Its not a simple issue.

C’mon, friend. Don’t you know that the dreaded mary jane has a terrible effect on one’s work ethic.

Ironically, it turns out that Chafftez’s turkey costed more during Loser Donald’s term.

Meanwhile, the lede to a New York Times story reads

U.S. gasoline prices are plunging just in time for Thanksgiving, and with the OPEC Plus oil cartel in apparent disarray, they could be heading lower for Christmas.

Lower prices at the pump have helped ease the inflation rate most of this year. But this week, they fell to levels not seen at this time of year since 2021, according to the AAA motor club, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine sent energy prices higher.

Eh, “Not seen this low at this time of year since two years ago” isn’t exactly a very strong statement.
