NEW Stupid Republican Idea of the Day (Part 3)

Whereas I figured that the sawdust just got pushed into lines by the edge of a board or something. It wouldn’t have occurred to me that it was deliberately imitating drug lines in order to make an allegorical point.

And it definitely wouldn’t have occurred to me that it was drugs, rather than the powder one normally finds on a table saw.

Maybe Hunter just wanted a Pepsi?

And his mom wouldn’t get him one.

You’re the ones who are crazy!

Thanks for the earworm, people.

It doesn’t matter, he’ll probably get hit by a car anyway.

And to nobody’s surprise, this nonsense is from Republicans.

Tennessee governor signs bill allowing public officials to refuse to perform same-sex marriages

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) signed a bill Wednesday allowing public officials to refuse to perform same-sex marriages.

State lawmakers approved Tennessee House Bill 878 last week. The legislation states people “shall not be required to solemnize a marriage” if they refuse to doing so based on their “conscience or religious beliefs.” According to the Tennessee Legislature website, the governor signed the bill Wednesday.

Lee has not publicly commented on the bill yet per his social media and his office’s website.

The bill does not allow officials to deny marriage licenses to couples based on their beliefs but prevents officials from being required to solemnize a marriage. The State House first passed the bill in March 2023, but the State’s General Assembly booted it to 2024 for consideration.

Apperently this was a week ago so maybe it was covered here, but I just ran across it yesterday.
Ron DeSantis has been explaining that it’s actually everyone else that’s wrong and that this whole “Book Banning” thing is a hoax that he’s going to fix.

There’s a million articles, but here’s his website.
https://www.flgov.com/2024/02/15/governor-ron-desantis-debunks-book-ban-hoax-calls-on-florida-legislature-to-amend-the-law-to-prevent-abuse-from-activists/

In reality, he’s clearly just angry that this is playing out exactly as expected with people following the rules (“abusing the rules” as he says) and reporting books that should be banned, like the bible.

At least the nice thing about gaslighting someone is that the rest of us can see through it. It just takes a maid or good friend to look at things from a different perspective to say ‘no, you’re not crazy, he’s fucking with you’.

I think I’m with Ron on this one

This is 100% true. It’s incredibly true, as if the whole process is about scoring cheap political points.

He is also correct on this

Granted, he doesn’t follow up with “for banning books”, instead it’s corporate mumbo jumbo, but we get the idea.

The maid was in on it, too.

So he’s using the “Hitler himself never killed any Jews” defense. Nice!

Was she? I haven’t watched it in a few years, but IIRC, the husband told her his wife was crazy and she didn’t have any reason to disbelieve him. Plus, weren’t they a bit flirty with each other? I thought any help from her was because she didn’t realize what was happening. In fact, wasn’t she the first one to confirm the lights are, in fact, dimming, and there are, in fact, footsteps?

But, again, I haven’t watched it a few years. Also, so we’re on the same page, I’m talking about the Ingrid Bergman version with Angela Lansbury as the maid.

Oh yeah - she was definitely in on it and was sleeping with the husband.

Between this movie and The Manchurian Candidate, I have no trouble believing that Mrs. Fletcher was behind all the murders in Cabot Cove.

Empty Greene rexed Libs of TikTok post about HB4876 in Illinois.

If you guessed “Libs of TikTok” aren’t really libs, you’re right!

A far-right influencer who was accused of instigating bomb threats against a school library in Tulsa, Oklahoma, last year has been named an adviser to a state library committee, the head of the state Education Department announced Tuesday.

Its content — which is often laced with bigoted rhetoric — generally singles out LGBTQ people, drag queens and their employers, and it criticizes them for promoting diversity, inclusion and equity efforts.

In addition to last year’s scare in Tulsa, posts by the account have preceded several bomb threats to schools, libraries and hospitals across the country in recent years.

OTOH, maybe that’s “libs” as in “women’s lib”? They do act like TERFs.

This is why I am daring to hope that this “frozen embryo = child” thing will be the undoing of abortion bans.

Because, if you really believe that women should be forced to bring embryos to term because personhood begins at fertilization, then of course a frozen embryo is a person, with rights. How could it be otherwise?

But it’s also true that endowing frozen embryos with personhood entails a lot of wacky shit. It’s absolutely unworkable.

I know it might be considered naive to have hope here. After all, the GOP cares neither about consistency nor with how crazy a policy can get.

But ISTM that abortion restrictions are being pushed by the absolutists, by the demogogues. How are they going to be the people to tell the mob that they need to be nuanced on this issue or they’ll look like a laughing stock? I don’t see a way for them to apply the brakes.

Right-wing social media has been yammering about companies leaving New York due to the $355 million judgement against Trump. Thing is, the only site Google News can find talking about this is Townhall.

The same social media specifically references Remington moving, which really has nothing to do with Trump and has been in the works since November 2021.

So take it all with a grain of salt.

Well, aren’t all the unfertilized eggs actually protential persons? Then, every month a woman commits murder.

Further, how many eggs does a woman have? If you kill her, then you are guilty of that many extra counts of murder. or maybe pre-murder.

And the next person that sings every sperm is sacred…you’re next in court, wanker!

Their viewpoint is that the dividing line between ‘person’ and ‘not-person’ to be conception. Unfertilized eggs don’t count. There’s at least some form of rational thought going on, even if it is of the “wait, the conclusion is so ridiculous, why do you still accept those premises?” variety.

That said, the whole darned thing is a deliberate slippery slope. There’s long been a extremist anti-abortion philosophy of full fetal personhood and a push by the legal thinkers on that side to bring about laws and legal decisions to that end.

The end of Roe vs Wade was one step along that slope, and pushing the idea that fertilized embryos can, in some cases, be considered children is yet another.

That’s been alluded to in various threads but there’s still a disconnect there when it comes to general public awareness.

ETA: Oh, and don’t forget, this is the same crowd that pushes the idea that you can ‘re-implant’ fetuses. Nutty as fruitcakes but serious as a heart attack

A fruitattack?
