The party elders had two chances to flush him down the crapper in February 2020 and February 2021. They rejected both without even a clown show of a trial. I have no sympathy. Or surprise.
That’s the one that kills me. He was already on his way out the door, so it’s not like booting him then would have cost them anything. They’d have four years to let the MAGAts forget about it, and build back a better GOP. I can’t believe how incredibly stupid they were. When history books are written, this will be the day they mark as the beginning of the end for the current GOP.
Now that’s brilliant! Since they’re printing them themselves, it would actually be less work to produce these packages, but the idiots will pay a lot more!
Why do you think that? For every step ahead in this country, whether it is a Civil War to stop slavery, Supreme Court rulings mandating desegregation or allowing gay marriage, or changing views of gender identity, there is always, ALWAYS a conservative party fighting everything tooth and nail, and winning. It wasn’t over for the Republicans when they lost those battles, and it won’t be over after Trump dies. Never underestimate the power of a group dedicated to creating a religious autocracy and hating “the other”.
Meh, MLK was arrested many many times and wasn’t surrendering.
(yes, I know, comparing the orange ignoramus to MLK is sheer blasphemy, but the point stands)
That’s why I said “current” GOP. It’s hard to predict things, especially about the future, but even if there’s a party called “The Republicans”, it will be a very different entity from what exists now, and what existed in the past. And the party itself may just disappear, like the Whigs, and be replaced by something new. Not necessarily something better, but something new. There are already a few groups vying to be that new party, and if the current GOP crashes and burns hard enough, one of them might actually ride that disaster into political relevance.
Again, why would you think that? The only thing different about the Republican party’s current “entity” is that the leadership is finally saying out loud everything they’ve dog-whistled for decades. They’ve always been what they are now, it’s just missing the facade of old white guy “fiscal conservatism” that it hid behind since Reagan. But the voters are still there, the policies are still there, and the victories (abortion, anti-trans, hatred of immigrants) are still there. They’ll survive even if Trump loses. Maybe they’ll go back to attempting to hide what their base really cares about, but I see no reason to believe they’ll suddenly disappear.
But will they all be in the same party? The current GOP “Coalition of the Deplorables” probably won’t survive a sufficiently disastrous Trump loss. Trump and his minions are in the process of taking over all the mechanisms of the GOP, and there’s a non-zero chance that they’ll break all of them in the process of trying to make Trump win.
After he loses, there will be a grand purge as each faction of the coalition of deplorables blames all the others for the loss. While there is a lot of overlap between factions, there are enough single-issue deplorables that a fracture of the current party into two or more other parties is possible, and that opens up the door for someone else to try to take over as the second party in the US two-party system. It will take some time before the different factions forgive each other for the disaster, if they ever do, and by then, everything will have changed.
Because the current GOP isn’t the one that formed in 1854 in Ripon, WI. THAT party ended slavery. The current GOP would love nothing more than to bring it back.
Is this a Ship of Theseus thing? When is the GOP really the GOP?
The Republican party has survived the Civil Rights Movement, Nixon resigning, Iran Contra, a billion dollar waste of money in life in Iraq, multiple impeachments, and so much more. They’ll survive an idiotic conman. As long as they continue to hate, whether it’s immigrants, people of different genders and sexual orientations, women, and “woke”, they’ll survive.
Do you really think that will happen again? Some kind of reverse Southern Strategy where what few moderates there are in the party will suddenly be able to take over the party and push it to the left?
As always, their hatred of others and of the left will win out. Hell, many Republican leaders hate Trump, and it didn’t stop them from fully embracing him and MAGA. They also hated Russia, Saudis and North Korea, but as long as there those groups hate LGBTQ+, immigrants, and the “woke” too (and the money doesn’t hurt), they’ll make fine alllies for the Republican party.
Look again: it’s $20 for ONE, with a limit of five per order. And they’re starting with real $2 bills and sticking the mugshot on top. So their cost is tiny.
But none of those directly attacked the structure of the party itself. Trump is replacing everyone in the party structure with his own sycophants, and none of them will remain in those jobs once he’s out. In the process of losing, he’s going to bankrupt the RNC, because “borrow and lose money” is his whole business plan. He’s going to run up their debt, and then run for the door.
Who will want to take over the gutted remains of the RNC, and be left cleaning up that mess? Offices will be shuttered, employees will have been fired or resigned, volunteers will be vanishing. Existing contracts will either be dropped, or end up in court.
Why buy that white elephant rather than start a new party afresh, and let the GOP creditors eat the loss?
