Well, kinda both. In context, Donald was talking about the auto industry:
The thing is, Trump has always talked in terms that both glorify violence and characterize the USA as “carnage” and such. He’s made several remarks about violent consequences if he loses an election, gets indicted, gets convicted, etc. etc.
So, would Trump be upset to learn that some believe he said the USA would be A Bloodbath if he lost?
Obviously not.
ETA: I heard and saw a fair amount of news coverage this morning: CNN, MSNBC, the networks, and PBS. And not one person on one show implied that Trump had been making a general statement about bloody consequences if he lost. They ALL included the context about the auto industry.
Let’s forget about the “bloodbath” term for a minute. This right here is an amazingly stupid idea. A 100% tariff on all imported vehicles? 40% of the cars sold here are built elsewhere. Making 40% of the supply unsellable would cause the cost of domestic cars and used cars to skyrocket, trigger crushing shortages, and basically throw our entire large equipment supply chain into disarray.
But seriously: hasn’t that been the story of the US economy for decades, now? Republican Administrations wreck the economy, Democratic Administrations fix what was wrecked, and then Republicans waltz back into office with the blessing of voters who’ve never noticed what was going on.
Okay, so conceding for argument that the blood bath comments were in relation to the Auto industry and not a general statement.
The basic problem remains, statements such as this lend to the environment in which violent action occurs. I don’t have direct quotes in front of me I’m afraid, but I’m sure everyone remembers the speeches given by Trump and others on the morning of January 6th. This is a part of that exact same thread. And hyperbole lands differently with his supporters than with anyone else’s.
Really, there are ten, no, a hundred thousand other ways he could have said that, and most of them do not hint at violence. He chose that particular phrasing because, well, he is a fucking asshole.
Michael Cohen probably knows Trump better than anyone else who’s flipped on him, and he’s testified that Trump knows how to ask people to break the law for him without explicitly telling them to do anything illegal. When he says there’ll be a bloodbath if he isn’t reelected, he’s saying it in the same way as when he told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by”, or when he said of his 1/6 rally “be there - it will be wild!”, or when he told the people at that rally to “fight like hell or we won’t have a country anymore”, or when he said that if he was arrested there’d be “violence like you’ve never seen”.
It’s absolutely a call for the cultists to kill people in his name, and the cultists know it.
The thing is, even supposing that Trump was only talking about the auto industry, it’s not really much better. Instead of saying that there will be violence in the streets if Biden is elected, he’s saying that everybody who works in the auto industry, or any of its subsidiaries, or wants to buy a car, or knows anyone who does, will be screwed if Biden is elected. I’m not bothered by it, because I know Trump is full of shit. But if you’re inclined to believe him at all, then any kind of bloodbath, literal or metaphorical, is a chance you’re probably not willing to take.
Where do we put “Pointless Republican Story of the Day”? GOP Senator Bill Cassidy says that Trump has said “dehumanizing” things about migrants, as well as voted to convict him. But will he vote for Trump? Of course. So what’s the point of criticizing him? Is he trying to sound as if he’s “reasonable”? “I’m very concerned about all of these chimps throwing shit. But I’m still going to let them pick it up!”
And they plan to make low-cost vehicles for the Mexican market. I’d bet that they probably don’t meet US standards for cars anyways, like most foreign built low-cost cars.
Re: the retreat, it’s not as if they have not had it at Greenbrier before. But yes, it’s out away from any other off-resort activity and very inconvenient for a quick exit to the district in the case of those running primaries. Also the last time they did it there (2018) their train wrecked at a crossing on the way with one fatality in the impacted truck.
