And nothing infuriates a bully more than a victim who refuses to cower and beg for mercy.
I’m sorry but this is ridiculous. If she had gone after Trump from the start she’d be doing worse than Chris Christie did. There has never been any chance of anyone beating Trump, Haley is just trying to hang on for as long as possible in case some hail mary gets rid of Trump. Hanging on included kissing up while it was necessary, and letting lose when it was down to the last two.
All of the other Republican candidates had already registered for the ballot in every state’s primary. While they have “suspended” their campaigns, they will continue to appear on those remaining states’ primary ballots. And they can revive their campaigns any time they want to.
The rules of a party are not like laws. They’re more like business policies.
The Rs have a set of agreed published rules. But if an unprecedented circumstance arises and following the rules is impossible, or guarantees they lose, well, they’ll act like a business and amend the rules so they do something sensible. What they won’t do is act like a legislature and gridlock themselves until its too late to act.
So my bottom line is that speculating about how the rules will work in a situation the rules never contemplated is a mugs’ game. The rules will be changed in reaction and rightly so.
For sure there’s an open process, and a more skulduggerous process to change the rules. I’m not taking bets on which method will prevail. But if rules need to change to have a shot at winning, they will change.
Yes, but given the current QOP inability to accept any form of loss as ‘fair’, any attempt to change the rules is going to end up in court.
IANAL, but I imagine there is a fairly good argument that the currently accepted rules are a contract and all parties would need to agree to changing terms?
Ted Cruz is 2016 explained how (by Trump rule) Ted, Nikki and Trump are all disqualified to run for president. If the parents are not both born here you are disqualified. Trump’s mom was born in Scotland.
That’s not how it works.
For example, Mexico has stricter requirements and it only requires one parent of a candidate to be a natural born citizen of Mexico.
But I think “Trump rule” isn’t supposed to be US law but what Trump thinks it should be? I’m not exactly sure what @TeroSunbear meant by that.
Yeah, I think I recall some of Donald’s Birther buddies back in the day babbling about that never mind you, but your parents too had to be both born Americans, and it was pointed out that not only was this never the fact, but it would not just knock off Obama and Ted but Trump himself would be out.
Not to mention George Washington.
They probably remembered that anyone alive at the time of the ratification was explicitly waived in.
Trump defintion, though.
Nikki Haley’s been swatted twice. I’m willing to guess who the perpetrator would support as President.
Refreshing op-ed in the Wall St.Journal today by Gerard Baker, who refers to Nikki Haley’s candidacy as the last chance for “the most craven political institution in America” (yes, the Republican Party) to regain some respect lost due to the behavior of Tim Scott and other submissive, self-degrading party “leaders”.
“They demonstrate that they are what he and large numbers of voters have long suspected them to be—desperate hacks who put their own advancement ahead of any other principle or consideration in life.”
Word.
Yeah, hmm…
Agreed. Although she would probably be tougher for Biden to beat (unless Trump stamped his little orange feet and told all his supporters to stay home), and I disagree with her on just about every major issue, she’s mature and patriotic in a way Trump never has been and never will be.
So is it money for 2024 or it is building a warchest for 2028?
Well, of course trump will get into a snit.
But also, there’s a number of MAGAs that wont vote for a gasp- “woman”.
If Trump gets in in 2024, there will be no 2028 elections.
I realize that virtually everyone is behaving as though ‘preparing for 2028’ makes sense–not just the politicians, their donors, and the media commenting on them–but all of us. Because that’s the way we’ve always thought and why should we change now?
Haley’s donors have to know that she will have NO chance in 2028 if Trump gets the Presidency in 2024. (It will be ‘still Donald’ or possibly ‘Ivanka if Donald is dead’.)
So of your two options, I’d vote for “money for 2024”.
