Nikki Haley announces US presidential run for 2024 (Not Trump please)

I find it interesting that she got 30% in a contest she wasn’t interested in competing in. Didn’t she loudly dismiss Nevada as being too rigged in Trump’s favor to be worth bothering with? And she still got 30% after that? Certainly not a win by any measure but not entirely a loss either.

Objectively I agree with you on that, but the media will spin it as a loss. The media is, just as it was in 2016, complicit in the rise and success of Trumpism. They keep thinking something else will stop him, yet continue to do everything they can to enable him - all in the name of clicks/ads/subscriptions. If he wins in 2024, they’re in for a real “I never thought the leopard would eat MY face” moment.

My understanding is that Haley isn’t competing in the Nevada caucus because it’s rigged for Trump, but she voluntarily registered for the ballot for the Nevada primary.

My understanding is that having candidates show up on SNL is fairly common. Off the top of my head, I remember cameos by Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Barrack Obama, John McCain and so on. I can’t remember if Joe Biden went on or not.

And here’s an article from 2015 mentioning several more candidates.

I remember Bob Dole coming on in a sketch where Norm McDonald was playing Bob Dole.

Ah, here’s a photo.

I remember an episode in the late 80s when they had announced that the host would be Paul Simon. After the cold open, out walk both Paul Simon (the singer) and Paul Simon (Senator from Illinois seeking the Democratic nomination for President) arguing over which one of them is supposed to be the host.

Jesse Jackson did a parody of his campaign in the 80s but it was after he dropped out as I recall.

One they didn’t mention: Mike Huckabee, at the point when people were noting that it’s time for him to drop out because it’s now a mathematical impossibility for him to get the nomination. You know, even if he won all of the remaining delegates. “Seth, that was an excellent explanation, but, uh, I’m afraid that you overlooked the all-important SUPERDELEGATES. Don’t forget about them!

Seth informs him that, no, you’re thinking of the Democrats; the Republicans don’t have those. As this sinks in, Huckabee awkwardly comes to grips with it, and eventually resigns himself to assuring the American people that Mike Huckabee does not overstay his welcome; when it’s time for him to go, he’ll of course exit with class and grace.

Seth: “Well, that is really good to know. We appreciate your stopping by, Governor. Governor Mike Huckabee, everyone!”

…and Huckabee then stays put, not getting the increasingly obvious hints that it’s time for him to leave…

What a fucking joke this was!

I thought 30% was a decent showing. At least a subtle message. However, She got 30% of nothing. “None of these Candidates” was a de-facto vote for Orangatan, since he wasn’t on the ballot. MAGAssholes picked that. But it didn’t matter. No delegates awarded either way from that vote. The “caucus” was a farce. The local news reported “Huge Turnouts!” (Yuge?)

Haley says that Trump and Biden are both diminished and that we need someone new. She also says that she pushed back on Trump when bad things happened, which I didn’t hear about, and you’d think would have made the news given how leaky his White House seemed to be then. She should have come out this strongly before now. Perhaps it would have helped. She does make a good point about RNC resources-Trump is certainly a bigger drain.

Codespeak for “I’m withdrawing and endorsing Trump”, probably:

How often per day do you think Haley asks her staff, “When is the Supreme Court ruling being released?”

“I"ve loved Trump for always and he’ll make the bestest President ever and I also love Putin.”

She might be dropping out, but I don’t think she’s going to endorse Trump. If she does, that will be an invertebrate having a spine surgically implanted, only to rip it out in front of a crowd (showering it in blood and cerebrospinal fluid) to demonstrate just how implacably spinless it is!

My prediction is that she’ll suspend her campaign and wait to see if he gets convicted or chokes on a hamberder or something.

If Trump does shuffle off, I doubt that her 17 out of 2,429 total delegates is going to do her much good.

Maybe she just wants to logically spell out the pitfalls of nominating a candidate who suddenly finds himself in hock for nearly half a billion dollars. Sadly, her audience aren’t really consumers of logic.

Well, at least she has said she will speak tomorrow. Not like a certain person who says that he will speak on a topic “in two weeks.”

That’s what I’m hoping for. Well, that and stating her determination to stay in the fight. I don’t think that she’s changing many minds, but she may be getting some RINOs to think twice, which I’m sure is among her goals. Plus, every dollar that is donated to her campaign is a dollar that is not going to another campaign.

Haley is staying in the race:

Eh, well - good on her. And I say not just because it offers a continued slight resistance to Trump’s coronation train. And not because I like her shitty politics or don’t think that in part she’s being in part opportunistic, hoping for Trump to drop out along the way for any of a few plausible reasons.

But at least she has the fortitude not to be toady to a bully (yet).
