(Old) For Whom The Bin Tolls- A Trashy Vacation MMP

But we’ll be at Dover, and, frankly, I don’t think FCD will be able to handle much walking and luggage haulage. Schedule is critical also - our flight departs Heathrow at 1635 so I’d want to be at the airport by 1400. Transfers from the ship are essentially door-to-door. I forgot to call the cruise line yesterday, but maybe I’ll remember today. I hope.

How many times a day do you visit her? Do you think she’s getting used to you yet? Ziva wasn’t one for scratching and hissing, but it took about 16 years before she’d let me pick her up… cats is weird.

Temp dropped into the upper 40s overnight, but I’d closed most windows and lowered the ones in the bedroom to a few inches open. Made for comfy sleeping. We might see 80° this afternoon.

Which reminds me - I need to call the HVAC guys - I noticed yesterday that the fan on our furnace could not be shut off except by the switch in the basement. Even with the thermostat set to Off, it kept running. I suspect it’s been that was since we had it serviced last month, but I can’t prove it - I’ve just noticed it lately. Anyway, they’re on my to-call list also. And the plumbers are coming today to do several fixes for us. Dunno what time, but they call when enroute.

Chikin sallit sounds good - I still have some grapes. Maybe this weekend I’ll make some up. FCD has been pretty obedient about what he eats, mostly, but he doesn’t seem to want to learn to make his own choices. It’s not all that hard, especially with the food diary, but he’ll either ask me if he can have this or that, or he’ll eat something then tell me. Sometimes he makes me crazy. But he has lost some weight and he’s been avoiding processed carbs, so there’s hope for his next Dr visit. I just wish he liked more fruits.

And huzzah! The guys fixing the road did the end of our driveway yesterday! No more big bump as we leave or return. And that’s all the news that’s fit to print (or all I remember.)

Happy Thursday!!

Morning all. Woke up to rain falling from the skies (hey, gravity works!), so another damp day is in store. Nothing much on the agenda, I suspect soccer practice will be cancelled (again) so except for the daily trip to the gym, not much else is planned. I might even do (gasp!) house cleaning. 63F currently and heading to 7F so a comfortable day temperature-wise at least.

boofae, 2bob, thanks for the information, I am fond of trains but the bus from Southampton to Heathrow looks appealing, I’ll need to check it out more closely.

FCM, if you are leaving the same day the cruise ship docks, the cruise line may be your best bet. I’m staying a couple extra days so it won’t work for me. And glad the road has returned to normal.

And it’s time for my Big Bowl of Cheerios to break my fast, so take care all.

My grands have been trained to say “Gravity!!” whenever they drop something or fall. That’s what happens when your mom is a former science teacher.

Showered and dressed and waiting for the plumbers, on hold with HVAC service. Good times!

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. I shall do my Senior Day shopping, then sloth.

Spot loves hugs, cuddles, and fussing, but being picked up is akin to being crucified to him.

“Gravity is a harsh mistress.” - me

i like using gravity as an exclamation.

my odd calendar issue continues. i was one day off for allergy shots, today not yest. then thought i had a meeting yest. when it is next weds. oy! i really don’t want this year.

i’m glad muffin has accepted her blanky. good progress there.

in bin news… today i wrestled electronic recycling to the office and put 2 bins of elec. recycling in the freight area.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to get sheveled once Sis gets out of the shower. She has a 12:30 appointment to get a tire repaired and I’ll go with her. Afterwards, we’ll go to Staples for a CO2 cartridge exchange and Lowe’s for a plant to thank my neighbor who took care of Nelson until Sis could get here.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Plumber is on the way. HVAC guy will come Moanday morning, as will the pellet stove cleaning guy.

Meanwhile, I’ve been sorting out the paperwork I’ll be carrying for our cruise. I printed out weekly calendar pages so I can keep track or what’s happening when, since we’ve got 4 weeks to account for. I need to sit down with those pages and the excursions I’ve booked and make sure everything is in order. I’m still a bit concerned about the return from Dover to Heathrow, but I’ll contact them again closer to the date to be sure all is in order.

Plumber’s here…

Remember when we had no heat? Ahh, the good ol’ days. Today we have no hot water and crappy water pressure. City work caused the water to be shut off, so the boiler shut down and it apparently takes three months for the water to heat up again. Makes me feel quite dirty, but we all do sometimes (I Wanna Be A Cowboy).

Went to Costco for paper products and discovered they are now carrying Graza “Sizzle” olive oil, which is some really primo stuff, and way cheaper than in the local grocery. While out there, I gassed up the car for about $.20 less per gallon than the place down the street.

We’re going to the in-house fund raiser lunch for Parkinson’s. I called it the “movers and shakers lunch” and got frowns from the wife. Hey, they can’t all be winners.

Mudslides. :frowning:

That’s what I got for Christmas. Well, my parents donated to them for us. I like those kinds of gifts, because they’re easy to store.

I’m very glad I have a passport. No REAL ID, because I’m not a U.S. resident. Can’t imagine what it might take to get a driver’s license in the U.S. after living elsewhere for > 20 years. Not worrying about it now.

I just got an exercise that involves a resistance band and my toes. Hope your Toe Yoga goes well.

Thought I had scratched my belly button, but it seems I have some sort of inflammation. Not sure how I managed that. Hope it gets better on its own, because I’d rather not go to the doctor for an inflamed belly button.

Plumber just wrapped things up. He was here around 3 hours with lots of slack time in there. And mostly what he ended up doing was tighten a few things to stop little leaks and replace a few washers. He was also going to replace the back faucet with one of the freeze-proof types, but because of how we built the laundry room, it was going to require cutting into a wall and stuff. So instead, FCD said he’d do that some other time (he could do it - he just didn’t want to.) Anyway, opting out of that saved us over $1K, so good choice.

And, frankly, we’ve been here over 20 years and never had a problem with that faucet freezing, so I’m guessing it’ll stay as is, altho he did tighten the packing nut to stop that leak. Anyway, all the little issues have been addressed for a relatively cheap $239. And once he moves his truck out of the driveway, we’re going to Daughter’s to figure out what we’ll need tomorrow to finish their outhouse. Or clubhouse as they’re calling it now.

In a further illustration of how unfair life is - FCD has already dropped 10# since he’s stopped eating so much junk. I’ve dropped, well, less. But we’re both eating better, so there’s that. Not sure what we’ll have tonight - maybe salad? TBD.

I had my shot in the knee this morning and so far so good. They said to take it easy for a couple of days, so that’s what I’m doing. This will be except for dong the dishes because we’ve got someone coming out to give us an estimate on replacing the windows and when we sit down to discuss things with people, we use the kitchen table.

Next up today is going and getting my new brace. I am actually looking forward to it because I’m hoping it works better and also the new brace is a little less obtrusive.

And the hits just keep on coming …

Sorry for bringing the room down, but I like the MMP better than rants. So, last month my brother-in-law died. A week later a friend of mine that I’ve been jamming with for a couple of years died. Then my sister - who just lost her husband - had her boss/mentor die. What else could go wrong?

I got a call last night at 1 AM east coast time from my sister to let me know that my father had what they’re calling a mini-stroke. He is stable in the hospital now. He got a CAT scan to confirm the blood clot and they say he’ll be okay with medication but he’s still rocking a horrible headache, so we’re all still concerned.

Thank you in advance for the well wishes because I know all of you are good people and hope for the best for those of us in the community and I’d just like to reciprocate it but I can’t right now because I’m starting to cry.

Fuck, I’m sorry. But still I need to post this for my own peace of mind. This is my therapy. I have to keep pecking those keys and get shit off my chest.

Jack, this is a lot more than one person should have to deal with all at once. Glad you are using us for therapy, MMP has been a blessing for many of us so now it’s your turn. Don’t feel that you have to “reciprocate” or do anything to be sorry for. Best wishes for your dad and hoping you get a little time off from all the losses. And feel totally free to come in here and do whatever helps: gripe, complain, cry, be furious, be depressed, whatever.

I’m working from home today, for the first time in almost two weeks…ahhhhh. I’m sincerely happy to be back in an office most of the time, but it’s an adjustment; I appreciate being remote on Thursdays and Fridays. Especially after going to the office every day last week for training.

It’s a gorgeous day! It was on the cool side this morning, but I’ve had the windows open since lunchtime and am enjoying the sunshine and 77°F temp (w/light breeze). On clear days the house gets really warm in the early evenings, when the setting sun blasts the facade, so I’m taking advantage of being able to have the air conditioning off for a few more hours. Sometime in the next month I’ll need to hang the room-darkening curtain in the living room window, to keep the house from getting too hot at the end of the day (and to keep the living room from being so bright that I can’t watch TV).

I love Pepperidge Farm’s Milano cookies, and have been trying some of the limited edition flavors: the Earl Grey + vanilla (“London Fog”) was a complete miss – no tea flavor whatsoever – but I just picked up some “Carmel Café au Lait” and am cautiously optimistic. :crossed_fingers: I’ll try them after dinner.

Yesterday I got a lease extension letter from my property manager: my current lease expires on June 30, and my new rent will be 5% higher. That’s really not bad, and is less than my recent pay increase (:tada:). Over the past 11 years, my rent has only gone up an average of 3.5% per year; quite reasonable. I’m pretty lucky. I’m also a very good tenant, which hopefully is a factor. Whenever the dog dies and it’s time to move, I know I’ll be looking at rents of 11%-30% more…so although there are things about this house that I’m tired of, I’m really in no hurry (and Bailey needs to stick around for a while longer)!

Part of adjusting to being back in the office 3x/week is that I find I’m less inclined to go out these days (and it was already pretty easy to talk myself into skipping things!). I’m historically an extravert who enjoys small talk and being around other people, but I think at some point over the past five years I kind of got used to being alone more often than not…? I have even less energy for socializing than I did before the new job started (three weeks ago); I have less energy in general, which I know is partly due to the sheer volume of information I’m trying to assimilate, but there’s definitely a Greta Garbo aspect. There are live jazz performances on my radar for tonight, tomorrow night, and Saturday night: friends invited me to tomorrow night’s show, and I know I’d run into acquaintances tonight, but I don’t feel like going out this evening and I’m likely to skip tomorrow, too. I still have Saturday night’s show penciled in; I’ll see how I feel that afternoon. And how the weather is: right now there are late-day storms in the forecast, and since going to that show will involve walking a few blocks in DC thunder/lightning might affect my decision.

OMG… :people_hugging: :crossed_fingers:

(also, what kayT said)

I opened all the windows this morning, so we have natural breezes, and neighbors who listen carefully can hear the Grateful Dead channel of Sirius XM.

I’m being careful with the time I spend hunched over the jigsaw puzzle table, so as not to get all stiff and sore. We’re working on a big panoramic picture of Busch Stadium, where the St. Louis Cardinals play. That means there’s a lot of unmarked green areas, as well as large swaths of tiny people in the stands.

FCMom, eating smarter is the best way to lose weight and not find it again. It’s hard to talk about without sounding scoldy, so I’m glad you brought it up instead of me.

Jack_Batty, I’m always mystified when I hear “mini-stroke.” Where do they draw the line between mini- and maxi-strokes?

Be well, be safe, and be You.

Jack - so sorry it all hit the fan at once. Good thoughts headed to you and your family. Feel free to rant here all you want. We’ve all done it one time or another and it helps.

Meanwhile, we’ve been to Daughter’s to prep for tomorrow. Now I need to figure out what to do for supper. FCD says he doesn’t want to eat, but I’m not letting him get away with that. Starvation is not an option. I pulled a chunk of mahi mahi out of the freezer. Now, to pick some sides.

:people_hugging:

I am so sorry all of this happened all at once. Please try to get some sleep instead of doing what I would be doing and fretting myself into a migraine. It never helps.

:people_hugging:

Howdy Y’all! Candle duty got done and I managed (on purpose) to work things out so the only thing I have to do at the funeral is read a lesson. Glad others are steppin’ up to serve. It’s hard to get willin’ folks on a Sattidy mornin’. Then we were bears who brunch. RDOS inactivities have filled the rest of the day.

{{{Bats}}} sorry about your dad and hope he recovers soonest. Sorry about the other suckiness as well. Always, as others have said, feel free to come here and vent. That’s one of the main tenets of the MMP. Mumper vents, rants, complaints and even whinges are always welcome.

I might continue to hang out there, but today was my last working day. I will NOT be responsible for the float and keys ever again!

Yesterday I was in such a hurry to change and go to the store that I left the float in my desk drawer and didn’t notice until the first person handed me cash. It wasn’t anyone I’d seen before, so it was kinda awkward. Happily, Hubs hadn’t yet left to go and pet dogs so he was able to grab the float and give it to me on his way to the shelter.

I’ve got to figure something else out because now that milk is no longer being inspected…I’m not going to sleep well after having my before bed glass of milk.

Nellie was the clever one, I just like to copy her

I’m so happy that Miffen has accepted the blankie. I hope she stops drawing blood soon.

The intertubz told me that I could put all of the meat in a bowl and use my mixer to shred it. I have tried it twice and it has never worked. Have you ever heard of such a thing and how do you shred your chicken?

Heating water on the stove to wash my hair was never one of my favorite things either. It was OK when we were touring on our motorcycles because then we were camping, but I had to do it about ten years ago when our water heater blew up and I do not have any fond memories of that time.

I’m also going to hell.

Mom used to go to a lot of lady’s clubs and was pretty happy to be able to bring all of her thank you cards with her to a meeting where a HI rep was scheduled to speak. There were many jealous old women when she showed the big stack of cards that her oldest daughter had remembered her with.

It sounds like a lot of Mumpers could benefit from Toe Yoga and it will be easier to do now that it is sandal season again.

I hope the windows aren’t too pricey. I do recommend them and I also recommend the highest UV protection you can afford. Last year I could stand in front of a window and feel the heat just pouring in, this year I’m forgetting to close the blinds because the rooms on the west side of the house aren’t heating up enough to notice.

I hope your brace works better.

Those look very good, please give a full report.

Time to get dinner started, tacos are on the menu. Fast, easy and semi healthy if you don’t eat the fried corn tortillas.

{{J-Bats}}. That is a lot of bad news to absorb in a short time; I am sending positive waves your way for your dad’s recovery. And cry whenever you feel like it; we’ll cry with you. That’s what communities do.

Back from an early (for me) gym trip and also picked up my new glasses, which are now reading what I am typing here. Soccer practice was cancelled, no surprise there, and we’re probably going to get more rain tonight and tomorrow.

FCM, glad the plumbing costs were so reasonable; mine have been in the 4-figure range. As for the kids shouting “gravity”, that’s cute as long as they don’t grow up and start saying “m…f… Newton” instead…

Cookie, hope the water pressure gets better. And as for the ‘movers and shakers’ comment, yeah, poor taste indeed, but I did grin a bit so you’ll have company in hell…

Sticky Buns, take it easy on the knee now. And good wishes for the new brace.

Oopsie, you do what you are comfortable with, but do get on and socialize a little, just pick your spots.

Knots, good luck with the puzzle. Spent a lot of time in the old ‘cookie-cutter’ Busch stadium back in the 80’s and 90’s, haven’t been to the new one yet, but one of these days…

And time to get back to slothage. More later.
