I did say, ‘I know this might be weird, but I went to El Tapatio and got you some churros.’
If I didn’t know it would upset SWMBO, I would have driven straight through – perhaps with a nap at a rest area. But I know what’s good for me. Sometimes.

OKOKOK. I get that you would have been just fine driving home if everyone on the road was also doing everything they should, but you would have been driving after the bars close and encounters with the late night drinkers are usually fatal. Not to mention the sleep deprived truckers who are working 20 hours of OT a week to finance a down payment on a house.
You did the right thing.
It’s raining, it’s pouring!
Your poor old shoe ain’t snoring!
… woke up with some effed up sinuses, so I’m up - vertical seems to be a better option for breathing - and I keep sneezing, which is annoying.
Might take a generic Benadryl. I can’t really breathe thru my nose right now.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 54 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 81 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. Nuttin’ big on the agenda today so the usual sloth and general overall uselessness shall prevail. OK, will probably go out later this mornin’ and do some irk on the cee-mint pond since the weather will be nice. Still that does not require me to gussy up for the great unwashed. Sup shall be ham steaks, scalloped N.O.T., peas 'n carrots and rolls.
FlyBoy glad you stopped for the night. I am sure the churros were welcomed.
JtC I think bats are cool. There are some bat houses out on the church house grounds that attract bats. I like seein’ ‘em out and about if’n I am out there when it starts gettin’ dark.
Cat_Glove I agree with takin’ the van back to the place and gettin’ them to reset the computer. It is their job to make it right at no cost to you.
Nellie hope the cortisone shot does it’s thing and your knee feels better soonest.
shoe hope the sinuses settle down so you can sleep.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Happy Firday Y’all!
I wish I could be a kissogram, or at least look as good in that uniform. (Though I could probably do a bow tie. Bow ties ae cool.)
And Im sure you didn’t need to have it working on the problem for centuries…
I did, thanks. I made it a bit stronger than originally intended, but it had the added benefit of making me tired enough to sleep.
I’ve asked Hubby to call for me today. Technically, his name is on the paperwork and… well, I don’t like phone calls. I’m hoping they will take care of it and have it be a quick fix.
Oh, without a doubt. They’ve been pretty good about taking care of things and hopefully will continue to do so. If this all happened independently, I’d bring it to my regular mechanic (the shop that did this is affiliated with Aamco).
Heck, we could try a mini-Fest of our own some time. Honestly, I miss having regular Doper get togethers. I know there are several Dopers near enough to/in Nashville to make getting together a possibility. I just don’t know these new boards/people to know if it’s a thing to do anymore.
I regularly take walks at one of the local big parks and doggos are everywhere. I love being able to pet them. A lot of times, I’ll ask their owners if I can take a picture for MFN. He used to go on these walks with me but not so much anymore. If I can make his day better, I try to.
Same here! I hope you enjoyed your down time!
We’ve got a lot of people with that reaction to many of the places here that haven’t gone back to pre-COVID hours. And then they complain that “no one wants to work”. But I’m not going into all that stuff because this isn’t the Pit.
@DocCathode is a huge fan of bats. Pretty much any bat-related article or bit of coolness, I send his way.
I am SO glad I’m futzing before getting my day started and not yet drinking anything because I would have choked on my drink with that. Absolute perfection!
Same here. I find that I don’t worry about most of what’s in my mailbox (especially when it’s addressed to former tenants.) Plus, I like keeping an eye on arriving packages. There have been several where we look at it and wonder what that could be and it’s usually a good surprise.
This morning is a warm(ish) rainy day. We’re supposed to have severe weather tonight. I’m hoping it all holds off until after my running around for the day is done. I really hate driving in the rain.
I need to get CtE up and ready to head to school. Im going to be the Nice MomTM and drive them all the way in today. Im taking some of the last remaining money from our account before Hubby’s check drops tomorrow to put a little more gas in the tank. I’ll probably be ok with what I have in there, but better safe than sorry.
And with that, I’m off to start the day before I fall back to sleep. Happy Fri-yay all!
When I was getting ready for beddy-bye last night, I felt something on my left leg but I couldn’t see it, so FCD was pressed into service. It was a TICK!!!
ick ick ick ick ick ick
He removed it and dispatched the little bastard, but the first thing I did was look up Lyme disease. Apparently, the bulls-eye rash appears within 3-30 days. So I’ll be watching. Dammit. Dunno if it came in on Higgs or if it hitched a ride on my shoe and climbed up my leg when I went to check the mail. Dammit.
And I think Taz isn’t doing well. He didn’t take his treats this morning - he just went to stare at the water dish.
To a less awful topic, I dropped off my car last night for an oil change. Here’s hoping they don’t find anything $$$. This has been the month for it.
We’ll be taking both vehicles when he head to the marinas - leaving the truck at one and the car at the other. That way, I’ll ride to the boatyard with FCD. He was nervous about going alone since he’s never been to the boatyard by water. So as soon as he’s showered and dressed, we’ll head out to get some breakfast, then on to the marina.
May your Firday be worthy of you!!
Morning all. It’s a few minutes before sunrise, the coffee is good, the sky has a few puffies among the pink-orange becoming blue; just another tropical day. 25C/74F and a bit breezy so just slightly cool on the balcony/patio. By good luck today’s track suit (my morning around-the-house PJs supplement) is my heaviest. Should top out more like 27C/81F.
Zero plans for today. Good thing since I accomplished zero of my Thu plans on Thu. Surgery does’t hurt anymore, just a bit sore and stretched feeling. Today I get to shower for the first time time since and wash all the blood from my hair. Right now I look pretty grisly from the back. But not for long. That’ll be good.
Might be irking over the weekend, but too early to tell.
@nelliebly, hooray for retiring Bruce so soon. Some friends are better as one night stands than as long term keepers.
@Johnny_L.A, hooray for not driving through, and double hooray for churros. I do stuff like that a lot, and not just for cute young things. My new wife would go apeshit if she saw me do that, although wife #1 thought it was a sign of inherent kindness and generosity. Which it is.
Hope that @TruePisces’ van is an easy fix. I don’t know how old it is nor how beat-up. But that smells to me a lot more like a damaged wiring harness someplace than needing a simple computer reset. Hope to not jinx the quick fix. Good luck shuttling offspring to and fro.
I cannot imagine the masochistic streak that causes you to volunteer to do that, much less as a lead. Just reading that sentence increased my blood pressure.
AZ69, eh? BTDT. Small town AZ is not meant for non-trumpers much less anti-trumpers. I have some old USAF pals who retired to Pine Top up on the Rim. Pretty country, but ugly, ugly residents, and I don’t mean their facial features. Although quite a few would benefit from a trip to the dentist. That place turned them from Traditionalist Republicans into raging trumpers in 2 years flat. There’s no recovery from that addiction. Be careful out there.
FCM: A tick? A tick? WTF. You don’ need no steenkin’ ticks. Good luck w that. We’ll all take turns worrying for you for the next few days.
Talked to the shop that had my car since last Fri. Should be done Mon. Of course they had to order a part that took 3 days to arrive that they could / should have pre-ordered based on the many days notice I gave them before I showed up. Le Sigh. Fortunately that hasn’t been all that inconvenient. 4 uber/lyfts to/from doc’s appointments, our typical amount of local walking and no trips to/from work - yet. Easy so far.
Her Ladyship even picked up my couple of must-have groc items when she drove there while I was getting sliced open. The groc store is our only routine retail stop that’s a bit out of walking range, and mostly due to the weight of stuff to carry home plus perishability during anything but the dead of winter.
In the time I’ve been writing the Sun has fully risen and the day is afoot. At least for those other folks working. Me? I’m practicing for retirement.
Time for a coffee refill. {{Hugs}} for the good people, {{scritches}} for the good critters, and a hearty [Bad Dog!] for the troublemakers of whichever footedness.
Cheers all.
Good morning.
It’s currently 43 degrees and dark outside. The expected high is 48, and the possibility of rain showers begins sometime after 9:00 am and switches to full-on rain around 3:00 pm.
Happy Friday and all that jazz. It’s my “short” workday, and I’m hopeful it will be quiet. However, I don’t really think my hope will be achieved.
LSLguy, I’m glad you are not in pain.
nellie, I’m glad you got to kick Bruce to the curb. He was a real pain!
FCM, I hope all goes smoothly with the boat stuff today, and yuck to the tick!
I’m considering going to the local donut shop to get some fresh warm donuts. They open in about 15 minutes. I don’t really need any donuts, but I’d sure like a good one for once.
I’ve had to start retaking Prilosec. The GERD has been unrelenting these last months, and it’s gotten so I feel it all day long anymore. It’s not comfortable at all. Any and all food now causes me heartburn. I used to have only certain foods that did that; now it’s everything. Fingers crossed that I can get back to relatively normal soon.
Time to finish my second cup of coffee. If I do end up getting a couple of donuts (must get one for the husband too), I’ll have make another cup of coffee. Donuts and coffee go together, ya know?
Johnny L.A., good for you for not driving through. That stretch of I-5 through the Siskiyous and points north is steep and windy and full of truck drivers on a deadline, as you are already aware. Driving it at night when you’re tired and they’re tired and the bars are emptying out is not a good thing. I’m glad you had a nice Mexican meal and rested up for the night.
Taters, I know what you mean about constant GERD. I’m on lansoprazole to battle it, and must avoid more and more trigger foods. The list of what I can’t eat and drink anymore gets longer every week. Near the top of that list is: donuts!
It’s Friday, everybody, so time to start winding down and anticipating the weekend. I think we’ll go to a Chinese place and have some soup dumplings, which is their specialty. Then back home for some anticipatory packing up of books and odds and ends. We’re hoping to retire and move in a couple of months, and I’m getting a head start on packing up unsightly non-essentials so that the house stagers can have more working room.
Oh, I really hope not. Though if they did damage it, they better fix it. For completeness sake, it’s a 2016 Chrysler T&c. Not too beat up, honestly.
The more I think about the unlock issues, however, the more I’m thinking it may be the fob itself rather than the car. This morning it would kinda unlock one door but not all. Which was still easier than pulling out the key. I’ve been meaning to get a second key made since we bought it 6 years ago, but these replacement keys are pricey!
I’m sitting in the parking lot at CtE’s school right now. The doors don’t open until 7:30, so I let them wait in the car. No problem for me. I did not a smattering of heavy rain on my way in and almost got stuck behind a train, but I know a lot of sneaky ways around various tracks. Now I’m just looking forward to getting my freebie drink before I pick up BtY for school.
I opted not to get the donuts. I don’t really need the fat and calories. I’ll stick with my usual yogurt today.
The reality is EVERYTHING is causing heartburn, so it doesn’t matter what I eat, I’m going to get heartburn. Toast? Heartburn. Dairy? Heartburn. Dark chocolate? Heartburn? Meat of any kind? Heartburn. Simple steamed vegetables with nothing on them? Heartburn. Potatoes? Heartburn. The list goes on.
What sucks is that I love dark chocolate and consider that a real treat. I only eat a square or two at a time and put the rest away. I’m actively avoiding it and regretting it on the few occasions I give in to my chocolate demon.
Hopefully, the meds will kick in, and I’ll get enough relief to live with it. Packing extra weight around isn’t helping; I’m trying to do something about that too.
That’s perhaps the second best outcome after no heartburn at all.
Now you have no need of dietary restrictions. Not “It’s all good”, more like “It’s all equally bad.”. Either way, bring on the dark chocolate, donuts, whatever.
There’s a bright side to everything if you look hard enough.
That’s positively poetic. Some good supervillain monologue there. I can picture Dr. Doom saying it.
G’morning, kids! Much warmer today at a balmy 28 degrees F. I made a really lovely alfredo with sour cream, cheese, and pasta water last night. Today I brought leftover tomato-bacon carbonara pasta for lunch. My guts are going to hate me come evening, I think, but they don’t get a vote. Lacking much actual work to do at work, I think I will get some school assignments done so I don’t have to worry about them over the weekend.
Anything interesting in your pond, swampy? Or is it not yet filled pending said work?
FCM - oh HELL no. Fingers crossed re: Lyme.
LSL, I think one of the best physical sensations of my life was getting to wash my hair after the surgical dressings finally came off. Enjoy!
Taters, the donut shop in my old town back home used to make a cherry cake donut that was transcendent. Do they have any specialties at your place, or just the standard stuff?
real fish, I don’t know the mileage of your van, but one that age shouldn’t have had to have a transmission replaced short of high miles or abuse. You may want to check out Tennessee lemon laws to see about recourse. The weird stuff going on on the dashboard sounds like a possible relay issue. As far as dopefests go, I went to a couple of them back in the day, but the MMP is the only place I’m active these days, so I’m not sure how many of our locals are still active. Zeldar and the late Zoe, brynda, cub mistress, tuckerfan, bosda, cosmos dan, st germain and a few others were there and maus magill has since relocated to the area. I would be up for a Saturday afternoon gathering sometime if someone else does the work of putting it together.
That was downright classy of you and OYKW not getting nachos on your shirts swampy. But then, you are gentlemen.
I’m glad that you got doggy hugs cat glove. Critters are a lot of comfort when (and even when not) you’re going through stressful times. I miss my late golden, Chamois. If I ever live somewhere with a big yard (not likely), I would love to have another.
Good on the breakup with Bruce nellie. I hope that the shot gives you some relief.
I hope that you get the GERD under control and feel better soon taters.
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, bed stripped, a load of towels / sheets in the dryer, a load of jeans in the wash and everything else on deck. Fixing to plan next week’s menu, make the grocery list, do KP and houseirk before hitting the grocery sto’.
The neighbor with the puppies said that two more will go to new families this weekend, so I’ll have to get my playing with puppies fix while I can. I love getting that without the work that they entail.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
Happy Friday!
NIce 39 degrees at the park this morning.
Not so nice that the drama continues.
Ripple showed his teeth and Barky and Humpy, which surprised me.
The Treat Lady came by and he was his snobby self with her again. She gave a few treats to Barky/Humpy mom to give him. Barky and Humpy were crowding him as I was giving them to him, and he flashed his teeth.
I’m sure it’s Prednisone, he’s hungry all the time. Normally he wouldn’t even care about the treats.
We are supposed to have horrible winds tomorrow.
We’ll see.
I’m sorry about the GERD Taters
Does stress make it worse?
I hope the cortisone shit helps Nellie.
Morning all. Woke up to rain showers this morning, so soccer tomorrow is in peril, which means a normal spring here in N. Ali-bama. It is supposed to stop before noon, just hope the predicted evening rain doesn’t happen. Watching the trains on Virtual Railfan to pass the time until first meal.
Oh, and the bird nest inside my alcove to the front door is occupied and being nested on. Last year they did birth several chicks but the nesting ultimately failed and I had to dispose of the dead chicks. Hopefully this time it works out. Am thinking about putting signs up to keep people away from the door and am not using it myself.
Cat Glove, lovely story on the dogs. I was in Hartford airport years ago with a fellow worker/friend and there was a ‘sniffer’ dog resting and the policeman with him allowed us to pet him–GSD and just as calm and friendly as you could want. And an active day…you could give FCM a run for her money.
FCM, happy boating and hopefully the tick was disease-free.
Real Fish, I’ve had the same problem with one of my fobs on unlocking doors, may need to see if the battery is low or not, my car is telling me it is low (using my second one for the moment.
Flyboy, adding to the chorus that your wife was a wise woman to get you to stop, that’s a long hard drive at anytime, but late at night after a long day…
shoe, the restaurant I used to work at many decades ago closed at 1am…working closing shifts were never my fun duties, but to 3-4am…
JtC, have fun stomping on those fires; you ever though of applying to be a moderator on the Straight Dope? And my refrigerator is a long way from the water, so I don;t think that’s it, but thanks for the advice.
OK, no trains on the map and I’m hungry after all this typing, so take care all.
Thanks! Every once in awhile, I find a good turn of phrase. I really need to get back into writing fiction again.
It has just under 90,000 miles, so not a lot in the grand scheme of things. We got it used in 2017 from Carvana. The tranny started acting up back in November and, honestly, the Aamco has been pretty good to us for the most part. They had no problem with replacing the first defective one they put in and while they were replacing it, found the second one they got was also defective. The only real problem (other than they may have messed up something with the computer or electrical) is that it’s taken them forever to get the parts.
I’ve only been to one DopeFest here in Nashville and it may have been back around the time that you started on the board. It was at Blackstones and I know I met brynda there along with a lot of others, including Tripler who was in the area at the time. I know that tuckerfan is still in the area, though I’m not sure if he’s still on the board. I’m friends with him on Facebook so I can always let him know about it.
As for putting one together, I have no problem with doing that! When I lived in Philly in the early 2000’s, I put together a biweekly get together for the Philly Dopers, as well as a few of the bigger gatherings that we had. So leave it to me! I’ll get started on it soonish.
I’m hoping that’s the case. We only got one when we bought the car, but I have a friend in the key business so I’m going to check with her to see if she can give me some advice/get a second key made. I can pick up two fobs that just need to be programmed/cut from Amazon for $20 so I’m hoping that will help me a bit with the cost.
My dad just called me a little bit ago and I’m finding even more reasons to be pissed with this hospital. They were supposed to find a SNF for him over here by me so I can keep up with visiting him and the like. Instead, they have him scheduled to go today to one a few miles from the hospital he’s currently in. An hour a way from me. And I don’t know if it’s because they couldn’t get him into one near me (including our first choice) or if they decided not to try. Because they aren’t calling me to let me know anything. They told Dad that they’d be calling me to let me know what was going on. No calls yet. Whenever they come in to Dad next, he’s going to call me and I’ll talk to them at that moment. I’ve told Dad that if he ends up having to go back into a hospital, he’s not going back there. The care has been great but the communication sucks. I’m just so over this all. And so is he.
CtE called me this morning to give me a bit of news from their school - of the 6 teachers he usually has in a day, only 2 of them are there or have subs. They are looking at spending most of the rest of the day in the auditorium because there are no teachers to teach them anything today. I’m not sure if we just have this many sick teachers or if it’s in relation to the protest yesterday or something else entirely, but I’m not going to force them to sit in the auditorium doing absolutely nothing all day. The one teacher that is there is right before lunch so their plan is to stay through that class and lunch, then call for me to give permission to come home. Which I’m going to give because they can get a lot more done here than they can in an overcrowded auditorium.
Now I need to go make mounds brownies for MFN and write up a grocery list with Hubby for me to know what to get tomorrow when I go shopping. Still not pushing myself or kicking myself for the things that I can’t get done. Continue to have a great day all!
I’m sorry to hear about the tick, FCM - fingers crossed for no bullseye!
You’ll all be happy (or underwhelmed) to know that, despite the many and various options for imbibing during my 3-day odyessy into a team meeting, I did not feel pressured to drink. Thank goodness. I guess it was 'cause the sales people weren’t there. FCM, your higher ups in the navy sound like they were giant a-holes.
My mom was told yesterday that the cancer is growing again, this time spreading toward her brain. Her chemo options have been exhausted. They have one more Hail Mary treatment they’re going to try, but it’s to help with symptoms and hopefully provide some relief via tumor shrinkage. I’m terrified out of my mind.
Oh, I am so sorry! You and your mom are both in my thoughts, along with any other family members that may be in need of comfort. I can’t do much - I know no one can - but I’m always here for an ear or a hug. {{{overlyverbose}}}
The one we use is the roasted green pepper salsa from Costco. It’s really good. I also use it when I make green chili stew; sure beats roasting and peeling raw peppers. Today’s breakfast was savory oatmeal topped with a fried egg and bacon.
Laundry day today.
Had some lightning last night. Today is blustery and rainy, which coincidentally are the names of two of the lesser-known dwarfs from Snow White. Glad we did our grocery chore yesterday. We’re actually supposed to get some snow next week sometime. Enough, already.
The wife’s latest load of GS cookies arrived, so we’re noshed up.
