I am so sorry.
Which is why DH and I plan to stay in tomorrow evening. We prefer to not be out and around on holidays that tend to involve a lot of drinking.
@Johnny_L.A, you don’t look fat at all. Good picture of a distinguished-looking gentleman.
I already knew you were a smart guy!
Yeah. I’m sorry it happened to you as well. It sucks.
The club has circled the wagons and her very large hispanic family has also arrived. I wasn’t really ready to risk saying the wrong thing so made excuses and gave hubs a shopping list so he could pick up paper products* on his way.
As it happens, everyone was saying the things I have been not saying, so I will be heading into the valley tomorrow.
My Tai-chi instructor had her first class in the town down the road and I was her only student which made me sad. I am enjoying the classes and I want her to do well so she keeps doing the classes. Tai-chi has been really making me feel better, but it is work and I won’t do it without some sort of encouragement outside of myself.
OMG, I used to hate the perpetual meeting generator in government work. Please tell me that it isn’t as bad in academia (which I speeled right the first time, go me!).
That one is way out of the way for most visitors, the world famous Spirit Room features local bands and a bunch of bikers. The owners and staff all try to encourage the “rumor” that it is haunted by the ghosts of the ladies of the night who were killed by drunk minors and there are hand painted murals on the walls of the artists idea of what whores in a mining town back in the late 1800’s looked like.
Narrator: The bar isn’t haunted.
They do decent burgers and their draft beer always tastes odd because of the altitude.
Now I think you are just making things up, LOL!
Seriously, I’m really happy that you knew what to do and that it all worked out. I get regular ocular migraines and sometimes the brainstorms can be pretty confusing.
I get wandering spots in my left eye. Sometimes I get flashers in both eyes, but that hasn’t happened for years. Thankfully, my after effects are also just a mild headache and a feeling of being washed out for the next day.
Many years ago, I worked on the third floor of a downtown area. A block away was scheduled to be demolished and was going to be blown up (down?) to avoid damage to the very close surrounding buildings. Of course all of us were very excited about this and got our boss involved in opening the office up so we could all go up and watch the BOOM!
It was a huge waste of time. There wasn’t a boom, nor any smoke or smell or even a lot of dust. The building just fell into itself in no time at all and then the backhoes moved in to scoop up the rubble.
Hurray!
It sounds like a good size and a very nice area. I hope it works out with no snags!
Which is why you are alive to post about it!
*toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, paper plates, plastic cups and utensils. Everyone brings food and there will be a bunch of people eating and drinking and using the toilets for the next week at least. Plastic forks aren’t nearly as nice as flowers, but they are much more practical.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. Almost vacation. The Small Egyptian God will be pleased with that.
But does it contain spirits?
More like “Pour me a pint, and I’ll tell you about the time I took down 2 109s over the Channel with my Webley.”
Morning, mumpers! It’s 15c/59f with a predicted high of 16c/61f, and cloudy. Weather app tell me that “It’s fucking black over Bill’s mother’s house today” which is not quite what I’m seeing from my office window. However, it accurately depicts the state of the sky when I was walking home from the train last night.
quietly I am so sorry to hear such news, what an awful thing to happen. Also, yay for the crisis counsellor coming to check on you.
Bumba yay for the new house! I hope everything goes smoothly for you.
Cookie good to hear that your migraine was nothing more serious and the cookies turned out great.
JtC sadly the meeting generator is likely to continue. I had a meeting with a member of staff yesterday that raised an issue I needed to talk to my new boss about. Not that we were able to reach any kind of resolution, it’s a long-standing issue with that particular person, we just needed to talk through what she’d said, and establish a plan of action for it.
flyboy you look very distinguished in that outfit!
WetOne I hope Ms Kitty forgives you for the indignities that have been heaped upon her
On the subject of kitties, we are collecting our two-week rental cat on Sunday so at some point before then, I must prepare some space for her so she can have a little secluded bit of the house if she wants to hide from everything.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin.
YAWN ‘Tis 58 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 80 and cloudy for the day with rain for a couple of hours this Mornin’. We shall see. We shall go over to the church house to take care of candle duty and then be bears who brunch at Eggs Up Grill. This will take care of the main need to feed for the day. Sloth and general overall uselessness will take up the rest of the day. Since today is Cinco De Mayo, margaritas will be the day drink of choice.
FlyBoy you look like proper English gentry.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then I suppose I must purtify and don attire appropriate for bein’ amongst the great unwashed. Such bother!
Happy Firday Y’all! Happy Cinco De Mayo!
Mornin’ all. Been up & balconating 2+ hours now, having started just as the sky began to lighten. Another lovely warm day here net of traffic noise. Her Ladyship ought to appear in the next 45 minutes or so.
The whole crane crew showed up at 7:30 when the rest of work begins on the site, and now by 8:15 they’re got one segment out and are slowly lowering the top part onto the newly shorter tower. At this rate they might get two or maybe three more done today. No sign of Cinco De Mayo sloth here.
When they do have to wale on something with a sledgehammer it’s fun because from my distance I hear the noise just as they get their arms re-cocked for the next swing. So the video and audio are 180 degrees out of phase with each other.
The process of removing one segment is conceptually simple enough but involves a lot of steps with little room for error. Thinking carefully about quite how many tons of steel is precariously balanced up there on top of a temporary scaffolding while you’re standing under it all whacking on it with sledgehammers and serious power tools is not a job for the faint-hearted, nor the overly introspective. And all while yourself standing 10 stories above the ground on an open-air platform. As we say in my biz: “Oh well; it probably won’t hurt for long.”
Having once again procrastinated on admin crap all week it’s now do-or-die Friday for accomplishing these things. Which may or may not happen.
@Johnny_L.A, that’s a fine pic of a dude who’s aged well. Nothing to be ashamed about there.
Not too surprising to me that folks would be saying those things out loud.
When you do dangerous things for a living or for a hobby, part of the compensating mechanism is to dump on folks who get killed doing it. “I’d never do something that dumb; he was an idiot.” is a form of whistling past the graveyard about the risks you yourself run every day.
Good luck to all today. Other than the Cinco De Mayo party / reception thingy our building is throwing in the late afternoon the day shall be food and sloth, food and sloth. Perchance to drink a bit later.
Good morning.
It’s currently 49 degrees and wet outside. The expected high is 52, and it will rain all day.
silenus, that is just terrible. I am so sorry.
I don’t have much on the agenda today. I have a hair appointment at 0900, and depending upon the intensity of rainfall, I may go to Lowes after the haircut. I would still like to go to my favorite nursery, but I don’t want to be pushing around a plant cart on gravel in the rain. I tend to spend a long time looking at the plants, and I don’t want to get soaked doing it.
After all that, I’ll come home and push the rollsuck around and wash the kitchen and bathroom floors. I need to dust too; I noted some dust on my entertainment center. I feel like I just dusted, but either I missed some spots (unlikely), or stuff blew in while the windows were open.
Well onward with the day. I need to get in the shower very soon.
The jacket hides it. I’m down around 65 pounds from 2016, so now I have a bit of excess skin. 20 or 30 pounds to go.
silenus So sorry to hear about your student.
As for me, I slept wrong and my left shoulder feels like someone punched it as hard as they could. I woke at 2 AM because it hurt so much. This sucks.
doggio, that’s a good pic of one handsome puddy tat!
Up, caffeinating, breakfasted, a load of towels in the dryer, jeans in the wash and everything else on deck. Fixing to do KP and houseirk. The rest of the day will be my usual Friday.
Like VanGo, I slept wrong and woke up with a sore left shoulder and a headache. Oy! Getting old sucketh mightily.
Stay safe and healthy y’all!
doggio it looks like you’ve been dopted by Spot.
Morning all. Up early and took the car into the dealership to get the turn light replaced and the key fob re-programmed. Got a courtesy ride home and now am awaiting their call back when it’s ready. I don’t think it should take that long, but I’m becoming less and less impressed by the Dodge dealership, so we’ll see. Meanwhile I’ll sit at home and sloth and see if the rain shows up or not.
flyboy, quiet dignified in an Old Coot sort of way…
Ok, need to catch up on my Friday you tube channels and get a little foraging in the kitchen, so all y’all have a good day now.
You look super sharp! No boring old farts here!
Thanks, everyone, for listening to me yammer on about my mom. And for the excellent advice. We’ll see how today goes. This has been a very, very heavy week.
A coworker called me sobbing this morning. She had just told me yesterday that she was expecting again, but this morning she started to miscarry. She’s leigitimately afraid she won’t receive treatment - she lives in an area where providers have begun refusing to treat miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies until the mother develops sepsis. I am so scared for her. This isn’t the way healthcare is supposed to work.
No, it’s not. Since this isn’t the thread for politics, I’ll stop there, but I’m guessing most of you are thinking the same thing I am.
Silenus, I simply have no words for what happened to your student. It’s horrific and happens far too often.
JtC, I’m sorry for the loss of your friend. It’s possible to be sad and to miss someone, while at the same time being supremely pissed at them for doing something so dumb.
Mrs W and I have DMV appointments this afternoon to get our Nevada Driver Licenses* and register our cars. I have no earthly idea how long it will take or how smoothly it will go. Wish us luck.
*In Nevada - and a few other states - they call it a “Driver License,” not a “Driver’s License.” It sounds clunky to me.
We’re at the boat yard… Finally. MIL gets her apt next Weds. More later.
Hi from the Camino again. I’m in a clean little hotel room, having seen many birds and had a great conversation while walking, visited several rather old structures, and eaten a late lunch on a sunny plaza. Today’s clothes are washed and hung to dry overnight, tomorrow’s route is reviewed, I was able to get some backup food (Sunday is Spanish Mother’s Day, so most places to eat are booked up), and a string concert at the plaza by my hotel window just concluded almost 2 hours of playing. I’ll be up at 6 with the intention of walking at 7. If it looks like rain, I’ll get everything into a big dry sack and pull out my rain jacket and pack cover. I expect to walk about 20-24 km tomorrow, most of that uphill.
Afternoon all. Car is back with a working key and turn signal, I am without several hundred (credit) dollars, and Uber really does work well. Oh, and it’s raining.
Just had a quick sammich and Diet Pepsi, will look to go swimming-n-sauna in a couple hours, and take the rest of the day as it comes.
talkie, I’m not female and agree with Wheelie on keeping politics at bay, but that just ain’t right. Best wishes to your coworker.
suzie, sounds like you are having a wonderful time; I really do need to visit Spain one of these days…maybe with the 20km uphill walk, though…
Wheelie, hope your DMV visit is short and sweet.
OK< need to concentrate on digestion for a bit. Take care all.
This week’s evening seminars are done (completion certificate still pending), and I just finished my last work meeting of the day/week. I have a tattoo removal appointment at 4:30pm, but it will be quick and is just down the road: I expect to be back home shortly after 5:00. Then, I’m doing nothing for the rest of the evening/night. This morning I got review feedback on the proposal resumes I’m writing, but I’m taking the afternoon to “digest” the comments and am giving myself the evening off. I’ll likely do some prop work this weekend, though, because the final deadline is coming up pretty soon.
Today’s mail brought a letter from my property manager: my current lease is up at the end of next month, and my rent will be increasing $100/mo. Super reasonable, and thankfully very typical: my rent has only gone up $425 in the past 9 years (one of the reasons I’ve stayed). My lease will automatically convert to month-to-month if I do nothing at the end of June, but I’ll be asking for my usual 1-year extension. I know m-t-m would give me maximum flexibility, but I hate the idea that I could be asked to move at any time and only given 30 days’ notice. That stresses me out. Moves are $$$, so I need time to plan for them. When I first moved in I requested 2-year leases, but I only plan to stay here as long as Bailey is still with me – and she’s old – so these days I ask for 1-year extension/renewal terms. If I ever get to the end of a lease term and the doggy is starting to struggle, I’ll go m-t-m.This is the longest time I’ve lived at one address by more than five years!
Very fly, boy!
Great update!
