Christmas dinner (ham, sweet potato mash, cabbage with bacon, onion and caraway) has been made and et. I’m leaving that settle before attacking the gingerbread.
Other than that, sloth, reading, talking to family and messing around in the studio have been the order of the day. It’s back to irk tomorrow.
I’ve been dealing with COVID all week. Spouse Weasel tested positive this morning, fortunately he’s not as sick as I was. I’m really pleased that I woke up this Christmas morning feeling well enough to engage with my kid. I got him this awesome remote controlled gear robot you can use to create different builds. He loves it. He’s been playing with it all day. He liked his other gifts too, but there are still four left under the tree and he’s forgotten about them for now. I’ve been missing him so much these past eight days it was just sublime when he crawled into my lap to cuddle.
I made it until about now, about 5pm, before I felt the need to lay down and rest. Within the limits of what was actually possible given our illnesses, I think things turned out pretty well.
Howdy Y’all! I am to report the prime rib was a big hit. The company smashed N.O.T., green beans ‘n shrooms, and rolls were the perfect sides. Also, the cheesecake with strawberries was well received. We laughed. We ate. We drank. We made merry. Everyone was gone by three-thirty and we collapsed in our recliners for a while. The dishwasher is now loaded and doin’ its thang. The biiiiiig trash can has been hauled all the way down to the road for pickup tomorrow. I’s tahrd! I foresee an early bedtime.
Boo sorry you did not get to see the grands today. Hope kitty and you have had a good day.
Everyone else, I hope the day has been all you hoped it would be.
Home at last, stuffded and whooped. Poor Tobias missed the fun, not that he knows it. He was missed, tho. Much good food, good conversation, and an OK gift exchange game. I ended up with a stinky candle in a mug (OK, not really stinky, but I don’t like scented candles) and my sister took it, so yay!
There are pics on my FB page that my sister posted and tagged me.
Christmas over at the Sister-in-law’s place. I got a melodica, a bottle of Laird’s Applejack, a first edition of “100 Great Science Fiction Short Short Stories” edited by Isaac Asimov and Martin Greenberg, a short sword and a “Straight Outa Context” t-shirt.
It’s been a relatively good day up until about 5 minutes ago when the power went out. Just as we were getting ready to watch the new episode of Doctor Who.
Unfortunately, power being out means there’s not enough noise to keep the kids from hearing us pray. We don’t have a lot of other options in the dark…
This was the smallest ‘Prime’ (really USDA Choice) rib I’ve ever made. It came out nice and rare, and was very tender. I like Costco rib roasts. As I said, I made creamed spinach with feta, and baked potatoes. (The potatoes were small, and I took the smaller one.) Leftovers are packed, including two very large, meaty ribs that will be further cooked low-and-slow and eaten with BBQ sauce. Probably after we finish off the rest of the meat.
Next up: Ham hocks and black-eyed peas, ham hock and collard greens, and cornbread baked inna cast-iron pan for New Year’s Day.
I literally had Stouffer’s mac and cheese for dinner. I just wasn’t well enough to cook. I’m gonna take this delicious meal you’re describing and pretend that’s what I ate instead.
One Thanksgiving when I was 10, my mom had flu. I was not going to not have Thanksgiving dinner! So I roasted the turkey myself. (I did go back to get advice from mom a few times.)
One Christmas I was kind of blue, and went to the only restaurant I could find that was open: Norm’s Diner in Santa Monica.
Quiet day here.
Not much like Christmas.
We opened the gifts from the nieces, and they opened the ones from us and everybody is happy.
Niece1 sent me a pic of her piece of PieCaken. It looks good.
I got both nieces and my great niece an Ann Klein watch and bangle bracelet set. I wasn’t sure they would like it, but they do. I got it for 75% off, so a great deal on it.
I irked a bit more on changing my address. It’s so irritating, so I can only handle a few at a time.
I’m still irking on setting up my new phone.
Other than that, a lazy day.
I hope everybody had a good day, and {{{Boo}}} I’m sorry things didn’t work out for you.
Tater, did I hear you say your pups are gaining 7 pounds a week?!
So that’s what the youngun’s are calling it now. Hmm.
Norm’s in Santa Monica was certainly an experience on any night, although Christmas dinner was probably a bit underwhelming. Then again, I would not be surprised for you to tell us you remember more about that meal at Norm’s than you do about the XMas dinner the year prior or the following year.
I’ve had a lot of Christmas dinners (or Eve dinners) on the road. Some were pretty grim. But one of the best was a kosher Chinese joint on a snowy night when we stayed a couple miles from La Guardia in the heart of the Orthodox district there. I sure remember more about that dinner than I do the adjacent years or what my wife and I did as a substitute dinner that year after I got home.
Our event was good, if long. We were away from our house 12 hours, so about 11 continuous hours in the presence of the happy Horde of 7 munchkins. A joyous seethe did they make. And a great haul of gifts did they each get. We had outside playing, we had insane amounts of cuddles and giggling squirms and piggy back rides, Her Ladyship created a semi-feast for lunch and a feast for dinner, there was very little overwrought crying, and the kids behaved too. Nobody was ill, the fire department was not summoned, and nobody needed a trip to the ER. A success by any standard.
The five adults had a brief respite during the littles’ nap time which is also [go play quietly in your bedroom] time for the bigs. So token adult gifts were exchanged then in the eye of the kidly hurricane.
Tomorrow we will do something less complete, arriving mid afternoon and doing a simple dinner of some sort.
In actuality, I can’t say for certain what I had. Could’ve been meatloaf, could’ve been liver & onions, could’ve been something else. In the past several years, remembering is easy. I make certain things for each holiday. I’d love to do Chinese for Christmas, but it’s easier to cook than to make a 50-mile round-trip.
