(Old) The Snowed In MMP

Here in Topeka we had more snow last night. Probably around two inches and while that doesn’t sound like much it’s on top of the 14 we got last weekend. There are a lot of neighborhood streets that are still bad. But it’s sunny now and later I will almost have to go out for petfood and some milk. I have a longer list but when I get home I only want to make one trip from the car.

shoe What a handsome cat! Also, have you had a tetanus shot recently?

metal mouse Sorry you’re getting that beautiful fluffy white stuff you didn’t want!

Paintcharge it sounds like a fun gig you’ve got there! Hopefully they take you on permanent.

Boo happy birthday!

Chefguy Why is the building so empty? Are there other issues that are driving people out or discouraging them from moving in?

We’ve gotten about 3-4 inches of snow. The sun is out and it’s already melting fast. The roads will probably be icy in the morning after the melt refreezes, but the high tomorrow will be mid-40s and most of the snow will then be gone.

Work is pretty much done for the day. I need to defrost some ground beef and finally make this chili recipe I bought all the stuff for weeks ago. Just been too lazy to do it!

Also, I love all of the food and recipes that get discussed. It’s such a wide variety! Things like pierogies aren’t common around these parts but it gets me curious to try them and see if they can be found somewhere nearby.

I like that plan. But that would make for a really weird grilled cheese sandwich.

Hubby and the kids stopped on their way back from therapy last night to get more bread. They were out, so they got a bunch of other stuff instead. The snow hadn’t really started yet this morning, so they went back out to see if they could score some bread today. And they were in luck! Not only did they score the bog-standard bread, but they got some artisan bread that Hubby will use to make French toast. He really does love me!

I second/third/fourth/whatever it is agreement on this. If they’re too many pierogies for you, send them my way and my belly will love them the way they deserve to be loved!

The problem is figuring out what will actually be useful some day and what is just holding on to “in case”. My dad had a really bad habit of “I may need this someday”. You wouldn’t believe the number of empty pill bottles we threw away!

This made me snort my coffee. I love it!

Yep. That’s where I first heard it and it made a lot of sense. When I was much more poor than I am now, the less expensive things made sense. Now that I have a little more disposable income, buying the better (though not best) version is worth it.

Not only all the tech toys, but all the portable chargers too!

I suspect the same for me. Unless Hubby gets me to the burn pit first!

For me, caffeine actually makes me sleepy. I can have a full Dr Pepper right before bed, and sleep as well as I do on any other night. (Which isn’t exactly good but I chalk it up to getting old.)

That’s my hope. I’m getting emails back and forth between the seller company and my probate lawyer so I can get that taken care of. Then it’s just waiting out the clock on and debts.

One of the things I took from the house before we left Wednesday were the ashes for all of Mom & Dad’s pets. They had four up on the mantle, two of which were from the toy poodles they had when I was in school. I couldn’t imagine letting someone throw them in a dumpster somewhere. So they will be on my mantle with my cats and Dad, and know they are still loved as much as they were when they were among the living.

Isn’t that always the way it goes?

BBBoo, happy happy! I hope you get to at least have plenty of you time and that all your reading is just what you need!

Happy birthday, WordyHubby as well! The meal sounds just about perfect to me!

The snow started at around 7 this morning. The district actually called the snow day at around 1630 yesterday, which is much better than the usual 0500 calls we get. We’ve gotten a couple of inches and it’s supposed to keep snowing all day. So I’m staying nice and warm inside my apartment. I’ve gotten a couple pictures. That was enough cold for me today.

BtY did a stupid yesterday that got him a day of Out of School Suspension. CtE had gotten herself a couple of fidgets shaped like kids guns. Hubby was worried about something happening if it was brought outside the home, but she assured him that she wouldn’t let it. BtY agreed as well. Yesterday morning, BtY was fiddling with it in the chair before he and Hubby left for work/school. Without thinking, he slipped it into his pocket and went on with his day. Unfortunately, it fell out of his pocket right in front of his para. The district has a zero tolerance policy about anything that resembles a dangerous weapon, so she had to turn it in to the Dean of Students. Which meant Hubby got a call about it. The good side of things is that BtY agreed that he was his bad. Hearing him take responsibility made me feel good because it means progress. The bad is that he’ll have to be out on the first day back to after the winter weather, and the next day, either Hubby or I will need to bring him in and meet with the Dean of Students. I think it will make BtY be a bit more aware, though. Especially since I’m planning on making him do whatever schoolwork is due while he’s out.

Send your good thoughts for my MIL. She’d gone into the hospital because she wasn’t feeling well and while there, they found lung cancer. Thankfully, it seems to be contained so they’re hoping that radiation and… something else (nurse-friends, help! It’s something like medicine therapy). They think that should cure her. If it turns out that it has spread, then they are going to do their best to keep it under control. She’s 80 years old and frail. Hubby is a bit worried, because we’re about 800 miles from them. But he’s glad that his sister is nearby to help with things. I worry that we’ll be making a trip north sooner than we’d like.

I need to spend time this weekend practicing the songs for Sunday Assembly. We were supposed to have Assembly this Sunday, but with the weather, it was rescheduled for next week. That gives me a little extra time to (hopefully) get the one problem harmony that I have. And practice the Trying My Best (kind of a testimonial thing) that I’m going to be doing this month as well. On top of it, I need to start putting together things for next month, as I’m hosting and Hubby is going to be the speaker. How did I get myself into this?! I know I’m going to enjoy it, but there’s the imposter-syndrome part of me that is convinced I’ll screw things up. I’m glad that I’ve still got a good relationship with former Partner because I’m running stuff by him. He’s been doing this for years!

And now I’m going to play some computer games. Because I deserve it!

Firday already? Sheesh. Today I get the additional lab test and see the oncologist PA. I keep telling myself she’s just a nervous Nellie and then realizing if I have to keep telling myself that, I’M the Nervous Nellie. Literally.

I also have to call Music on Hold, aka the eye clinic, to make an appointment.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOO! I am toasting you with a cuppa. If I lived closer, I’d happily bake you a cake. What’s your favorite kind?

I used to do that in my teaching days, which was stupid because schools in Wyoming (Motto: If you want safety, move.) almost never give snow days. There were no snow days built into the calendar. The decision was entirely based on whether the buses could a) start and b) get out of the bus garage parking lot. We had two snow days in my 25 years there, and one was because it was -26º F, which was odd because they hadn’t closed school on other days when it was colder.

This is true. I once had an apple fritter chase me from the faculty lounge, down the hall, and to my classroom before it forced my mouth open and jumped into my belly. Resistance is futile.

My theory is that they get drunk and then grow bored with playing hand soccer with balls of masking tape, so they start randomly predicting weather. Just a theory.

Bread seems to be the big one. When my sister worked as a supermarket cashier, bad weather was predicted, and people mobbed the bread delivery guy and were grabbing loaves of bread off his tray as he entered the store. The tray was empty long before he finally made it to the bread aisle, which was also empty.

Happy birthday, BBBoo!! :birthday:

And happy Friday afternoon, everyone else! What a long week it’s been. Partly because of the snow, but also five-day work weeks are so last year.

It’s currently 32°F with a “feels like” of 24, which is really not too bad. The winds are finally back to normal (~9 mph vs yesterday’s gusts of 40+ mph), which makes a big difference – it makes a difference to how warm my house will stay, as well. At some point this afternoon I’ll finally go shovel the driveway from behind my car to the street. I know there will be ice blocks from the snow plows, but I’ll see how it goes. We’re still expecting only ~1" of new snow overnight, so hopefully I’ll be able to keep my 11am blood donation appointment and then run some errands. :crossed_fingers:

I got my Instacart delivery today, which made me happy…well, mostly happy: Wegman’s was out of both flavors of Yasso frozen Greek yogurt bars, which are my new favorite indulgence. Meh. I’ll just have to swing by another store while I’m out tomorrow. But I have bananas again, and plenty of Gatorade Zero, so I’m pretty happy!

Also making me happy is that I was able to start building Lego Pac-Man last night. I finished this part, which was bags 1-3:

https://i.ibb.co/ZgFptJg/2025-01-09-Pac-Man-Bags-1-3.jpg

When I saw the picture on the box I didn’t like that Pac-Man was being chased, and I planned to turn him around and make the eyes on the ghosts face the other way – but, turns out there’s a button on the back that flips everything around so that Pac-Man is chasing the ghosts:

It’s pretty cool! I’d been expecting some mechanical action in the main arcade console, but I didn’t know about this. It uses gears and a small rubberband…which I will break if I don’t stop playing with it. :joy: I’ll start tackling the arcade console (bags 4-14) tonight.

Ahhhh that makes much more sense.

Well if it does ever happen, you must be sure to let me know: the cathedral is only 12 miles east of my place.

Ouch!! But I second those who are glad it isn’t any worse.

(bolding mine) :astonished: :sob:

Ugh… :crossed_fingers:

Yes, you do!

Last time we were in Ocala, we were amazed by the number of car washes within a few miles of each other. For the longest time in our county, there was one car wash/detail place and maybe 3 or 4 automated drive-thru places. Now there’s another big, fancy one going in next to Texas Roadhouse as well as this one in Leonardtown. I read where someone wanted to put another in not too far from the TR facility, and lots of folks are protesting to the county board.

Being frugal, I prefer to do mine in the driveway unless it’s just for a quick exterior de-crudding (for $10 in a drive-thru.) As old as my vehicle is, detailing seems like overkill - I can vacuum the inside myself just fine, TYVM. The worst part is doing the insides of the windshield and back window. I cuss but I get them done… sorta. But, yeah, I’m suspecting some franchise show sold a bunch of people on car washes.

Look in the frozen potato section of your grocery store - that’s where I’ve seen them - specifically Mrs. T’s brand. I used to make my own with my grandmother’s recipe but it’s too much like work these days, and very messy. Or maybe I’m the messy one…

Like my dad’s collection of baby food jars - when the last baby was in her 30s…

I guess I’m the weird one, always having a loaf or two in the freezer. Plus I try to always have eggs and milk on hand, and peanut butter, and TP, and, well, normal stuff one needs to live. I have a big enough house that I can lay in supplies - one doesn’t want to run out of deodorant or dish soap, after all!

Semi-close call today, sorta. Let me 'splain…

FCD took his drawing package to our boatyard so they could quote the work we want done. They recommended he go see the guy who owns a local machine shop and who happens to be on the board of ABYC, among other very impressive credentials. He took a look at FCD’s drawing an immediately pointed out things that didn’t comply with the standard. Which means if we had a fire or something on the boat and the insurance adjuster saw such an installation, we’d be out of luck - being out of compliance voids insurance coverage.

So the guy in Trappe was giving out all kinds of outdated information and actually doing installations that don’t comply. Thank goodness we found out soon enough to keep us from doing it wrong. So FCD is back at the drawing board - OK back at his computer - starting to modify his design… again… Some of the changes will save us money, some will cost more. Not sure what the end result will be, but I guess we’ll find out.

Meanwhile, my last load of dirties is sloshing away and the first 2 are folded and put away. We’re promised 2, maybe 3 inches of snow overnight, which means I’ll likely be shoveling in the morning. It won’t be enough for me to call my snow guy.

And so goes the day. I should think about supper - maybe potato soup??

Lawrence O’Donnell spoke about wind being very dangerous last night. He explained about the wind from the ocean bringing cooling to CA but the winds that are whipping across CA now are Santa Ana winds that come from inland toward the ocean and are causing the fires to spread tragically. These winds are up to 100 mph.

Pierogi are ready to eat so I’m going to sign off for now. TTYL.

Today was the 200 Table’s turn to be FUBAR. I got sent there to sort for 3/4 of the sort, and T from the 100 Table was there the whole time. I stopped at Teeter to pick up my Friday fish(catfish today). Yesterday the store was blown out of onions and jugs of water, today it was chicken and buttermilk. Apparently the hot new SNOWPOCALYPSE food is fried chicken and boiled onions. I stopped at the ABC store for some rye(priories), they are closing early and not open tomorrow. Shit just got real. Also, this will be the first snow in over 3 years, and Spot is 3. He’s never seen it before.

Him and his negative Centipedes.

Are you talking weather or bad dates?

:birthday: :partying_face: :champagne:HAPPY BIRTHDAY BBBoo!!!:champagne::partying_face::birthday:

That’s beyond cool.

philly will have disappointing snow again. we may get a dusting to a coating.

once again, south of us will get more snow.

Happy Friday!

Happy Birthday Boo!

It’s 29 feels like 24 outside. Since I’m staying inside it doesn’t matter.
I’m cold no matter what anyway.
We’re supposed to get a little snow tonight.
We got groceries yesterday so we don’t need to go back out until Moonday night.

Monkey is quite the handsome dude.
Ouchie on the staple, I couldn’t read the details.

Nothing much going on around here.
Just dishes, laundry, vacuuming, dusting, all the fun stuff.
I have to log in to irk soon.
We got our new contracts to sign and it wasn’t even a full 24 hours before they were sending reminders to sign them and turn them in.

I never had a peirogi until after I got married and my MIL served them. My father just about had a cow when he found out I was eating them. He thought of them as poor people food. That is what his mother made when they were running low on food, she stuffed them with whatever leftovers were in the fridge.
I only buy Mrs. T’s. I got another brand once and they were awful. They had an off taste and the dough was too thick.
My ex-MIL got them from the church ladies. They were really good.

Guess I’m weird too, usually have a 1/2 loaf of Bunny Bread and one of Lewis Hearty Rye loafs in the freezer, along with any Hamburger or Hot Dog buns I don’t need for a few days.

Been sitting around and eating too much, the temperature is now above 32F but I don’t want to go out to the gym now with the sun going to set in a couple of hours and this evening it will get back below freezing and I won’t trust the untreated roads here. So I guess one day without exercising and excess calories is permissible (need to grab a couple cookies next…).

Cookie, hope the elevator crisis can be solved.

52, it is rather pretty, except it only stays for a day and then devolves into slush and muck.

Real Fish, glad they were able to find bread, I really didn’t want to go exploring much this morning and I had a loaf of Rye bread in the freezer, so all good. And concur with taking the pet’s ashes with you, just doesn’t seem right to have them dumped out. And hopefully BtY will learn from his error, in this day and age it could have ended much worse. Best wishes for MIL.

Oopsie, that is a quite colorful (and quite clever) item there.

FCM, I’ll go to a carwash maybe every other month, Buc-ees down the road claims to have the longest drive-thru car wash ever, been there once and it is an experience. And glad FCD listened and learned from the pros, might not save a lot of money but will prevent a lot of hassle.

And need to get back to internettin’. Hang in there all.

HBD to BBBooo!
Though I’m a Charter Member of the SDMB, I’m relatively new at doing MMPs. Surely, somebody has said this before, but is it a Fump on a Friday? As in Mump, Tump, Wump, Thump, Fump, and Sump? (Oddly, my computer gave me squiggly lines on only Tump and Fump, out of that group.)
I got my 3:00 PM pillage on time, so my fingers are more or less behaving. I’m listening to Science Friday on the radio. I’m still going through Kleeneces (that’s the plural, right?) and cough drops, but not as many as yesterday.

That’s when you use black or white (yeah, I know, you’d have to buy another skein of yarn) between colors for stripes. I made a hat and scarf with black and bright scraps that way once. They go with any coat.

Do you have anyone who would serve as godparents for GG and Jolene? That’s something that I thought about when I got Nelson. He has a local doggy ICE listed in my phone and they have my sister’s (his dogmother) contact info, should they need to make more permanent arrangements for him. I am also dogmother to a wonderful beagle pupper whose dad was 75 when he got her.

I hope that your tetanus booster is up to date. You don’t even have to go to the doctor anymore, you can just go to Walgreen’s, CVS, Kroger or any other pharmacy that does flu shots and the like.

Happy birthday boo! :birthday:

They’re building a new Aldi on the way to the Kroger where I shop. That will make it nice to stop for just one or two things on the way instead of just heading across town as a special trip.

We had about an inch when I got up. Now, it’s closer to 3".

We’ve had a whole mess of them sprouting up around here too. I attribute it to the number of apartment complexes being built (most of us apartment dwellers use carwashes to bathe our vehicles).

Or bacon with the onions.

Howdy!

As stated above, we have snow. I was surprised to see salt already down on the drive and walkways yesterday when I got home from irk because last year, they didn’t do either all winter. Since I walked Nelson this morning, they’ve shoveled walkways again. It’s nice to have both a manager and a maintenance guy who live on premises.

Because of the forecast, I picked up a few groceries when I got prescriptions yesterday (the CVS I use is located inside Tar-jay). There were no plans to get my hiney out today.

On the home front, houseirk and laundry are done and I’m just about to take a small reddish dog out again. I had to stop vacuuming three times because the little turd kept getting his toys out of the toybox to play (you’d think I could train him to put them away, given that he knows where the toybox is :stuck_out_tongue: ).

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

Happy Boo day!

Turns out I spoke too soon about getting the car situation fixed…
I’d signed up for one of those online ‘We buy your crap car for peanuts but at least we take the damn thing’ companies. I picked that one because they said they normally could do next day collection, and the reviews said they were easy to work with.

Signed up on Tuesday afternoon, accepted the offer of a few magic beans and thruppeny bit they found down the side of the couch, then get messaged last thing asking what days were good for pickup. I’d said Wednesday ideally, but Thursday would be OK too, so long as it was between 10am and 5pm.
Wednesday morning got the reply saying it was booked in for Friday. No time given at all- not even a ‘between 10 and 5’. The observant amongst you may notice that this is not the next day, by any definition.

The message said it would be done by another company on contract, but gave me no contact details for them.

I called this morning to check what time it would be, and faffed around as they put me through 3 times to different people, making me repeat the car registration over and over, then putting me back on hold. I was eventually told the driver would be there in an hour. Maybe an hour and a half. Maybe 2 hours. Definitely not more.

3pm, still no pick up.I normally finish early on Fridays, and I didn’t want to start anything all afternoon because I was expecting them to contact me any minute, so I barely did anything.

4pm, I got fed up and tried to contact them again.

Apparently there was a typo in my phone number, so they’d left multiple messages and texts on someone else’s phone. OK, the typo is on me for not checking, but… really? They just call the same number over and over rather than, I dunno, sending a damn email to check, given that the whole thing to that point was arranged by email? I spent all afternoon waiting for a collection that had been cancelled hours ago? They had sent me a form to check, but half of it was internal stuff and they only told me to check the address and the car details; my phone number, with one digit different, is indeed listed on there, squashed in next to something called a ‘Collection code’. I hadn’t even noticed it. Sure, it’s my typo, on the initial quote form, but if it’s literally essential or it all gets cancelled, let people know that.

Instead, they skipped the collection, and apparently spent the afternoon expecting me to call them- on a number I hadn’t actually been given- to rearrange, but didn’t in any way tell me. They said they didn’t have any way to contact me, apart from a (wrong) phone number, so they couldn’t contact me. I pointed out that the company they’re contracted with obviously has a way to contact me and got a response of “Yeah, I think we normally contact them. I don’t know why we didn’t this time”.

They then said they can’t collect before Tuesday. Very much not ‘next day’ from the previous Tuesday. I said to cancel it then, as I can find someone else to collect before then, and besides, with them giving no time estimates and a very bad phone signal inside, there’s a good chance I’d miss them again anyway. They claimed they can’t cancel it, they can only reschedule it. I told them they can come if they like, but the car won’t be there. I said I’d only accepted the offer because it was offered as probably next day collection, not in a week’s time collection, and got the reply “Well it’s not our company that advertises that…”

I’d told irk I’d have the car shifted out the staff car park by end of day today. By the time I’d found out this was not going to happen, it was far too late on Friday afternoon to have any chance of getting it sorted today, plus the receptionists had gone home. Hopefully I can get it collected over the weekend or Moanday at the latest…

I’m so sorry to hear about your MIL - I hope that it can be taken care of with radiation and whatever else the oncologist recommends. We’ll be thinking about you guys.

And that stinks about the fidget. We had something similar happen with my son’s whittling chip from scouts. It was made in the shape of a knife, fell out of his pocket and he narrowly avoided suspension, but only because it was during the after-school program run by the Y. It sounds like BtY did a beautiful job handling, though it sucks that those policies have to be so harsh.

@BippityBoppityBoo

Happy birthday my friend

The kids are outside in the snow once again - overlyboy sledding and overlygirl shoving a gigantic block of ice up the hill. I took a longer than usual break to throw the fondue together for lunch and it was lovely. The husband unit prefers to have his largest meal at lunchtime; normally he’s on his own, but I made sure I had a couple of hours in the middle of the day so we could hang out together.

I covered the table with parchment paper (couldn’t find newspaper) and covered that with bread cubes, sliced sausages, pretzels, carrots, berries, pears, cookies, graham crackers and other sundries along with a cheese fondue pot and one for chocolate. That’s right, I couldn’t be bothered with plates - it was like the cheese version of a crab boil.

Dinner will be salad and a small slice of amaretto cake, because we all need more sweetness. I’m so glad it was a snow day. Overlygirl’s conditioning has been canceled, so all we’ve got to do is lounge. Hopefully. Unless the sterno’s not really out and things catch fire. Off to do strategery.

Two new one here, maybe a mile apart on the same street. That’s not as bad as the new car parts place that opened right across the street from an existing one.

Still waiting for the video, y’know…

I’ve never used those terms or seen them, to the best of my knowledge, others may be more helpful. I and others do use the swampy-approved weekly calendar which goes: Moanday, 2sDay, Hump Day, Thorsday, Firday, Sattiday, and Sunday.

Welcome back, it sounds like you had a nice little get-away…until your sciatica started acting up :frowning:

That’s the sort of thing I’d do for free. I love making order our of chaos. I hope you enjoy!

And, hmmmm. The bus just stopped in front of our house. BBL
