It’s a problem everywhere, apparently. Older people are preferring to stay in their homes to live out their days, rather than reside in a 55+ facility or, even worse (in their minds), an assisted living facility. It places a burden on other family members, of course, who have to deal with someone whose age eventually becomes a serious liability requiring more and more time and effort for the rest of the family. I understand the reluctance to give up one’s home, but it becomes impractical at some point.
Interesting, I had no idea! IIRC, you’ve mentioned elsewhere on the board that you don’t really have much in common with the other people that live there - you and your spouse are well-travelled and they are not and have no interest in it. Why do you stay?
Howdy Y’all! We brunched and then went to the seedy sto’ cause they have diet Poopsie on sale. Then it was back to da cave for RDOS inactivities. It’s cold out and beginnin’ to rain, so glad to be inside, warm and dry. Sis called so we yakked a while. It’s snowin’ in Ye Olde Hometowne. Her two year old grandson had never seen snow. My niece took him out to play in it and after a few minutes he wanted to go back inside and would not go back out again. Smart kid. Takes after his great uncle when it comes to snow.
A productive day fighting shop clutter at the museum’s warehouse/shop. Still a loooong way to go. Their hardware system is a mess. The previous person in charge of the travelling exhibits was a horrible organizer. Everything is in deteriorating ziploc bags with illegible writing on them.
The newest one around here has gotten noise complaints about the vacuums. Big enough complaints that it got a couple articles in the paper. Thrilling beat for the writer, that one.
Its snowing but its very fine flakes, it almost looks like fog.
I’m hoping its only 3 inches, I always worry about the power.
Got a wrap at the store, that will be supper.
Went down to check the mail, there was Moles waiting for his nightly feeding by Oliver.
So I gave him some tuna.
It’s a better facility than most of the corporate-owned places. Most of them have paper-thin walls and you hear everything your neighbor does. This place has terrific sound attenuation. It’s also centrally located in a good part of the city, close to restaurants, shopping, etc. The pluses outweigh the negatives. We’ve never been particularly social, but are on good terms with the people who live here. Conversation tends to be mundane and I’m not much for small talk.
Ah, if only we lived a wee bit closer. I can always find a way to be entertaining… Although, after reading about your Harley pranks, I’m not sure I could live up to that…
That’s really great to hear!
Yep, I almost went yesterday, too.
Not sure how I didn’t get here until now. I’m not sure what I’ve even been doing except for going to the post office. But, yeah, hi!
The bus had stopped in front of our house because someone walking had waved them down and then jogged half a block to get there. Then they had to wait for her slower friend to arrive. I know this because I went out to check and see if there was a bus fare issue. The bus driver - not the one I met - said that if I wanted to pay their fare I could, but she wasn’t going to leave them out in the snow for two bucks.
I keep telling people that I’m not nice!
Well, that kinda sucks. I hope it heals cleanly and painlessly.
I used to love those cars. I’d set them off when I was bored just because I was bored.
Cats, phone, wallet, pill box and stitching project. Most of my tower stuff is also on the cloud. I’d lose a few things, but nothing that was that important.
Do be sure to have a go-bag ready at all times, you never know when you will need to gtfo right now. My go-bag includes an unread paperback book, a small plastic canvas kit (smaller and lighter than carrying frames) and dark chocolate.
Thank you for sharing this. A local landscaping company came around and cleaned our driveway and walk this morning. They were doing their good deed for the community (we are on the official gimp list) and refused our money. I wanted to send them a check, but had no idea how much something like that was worth.
TBH, it wasn’t worth anything to us because we had things handled, but we want to encourage their kindness and maybe next time we won’t have things handled.
What does Ariel think about the snow? I used to have a friend with horses and he said one of them wanted to play all day in the pasture and the other one refused to step foot out of the barn when there were three flakes of snow on the ground.
Horses sounded a lot like cats when I listened to him tell it.
I made chicken rice soup today for just that reason. We had bean soup and cornbread yesterday and I’m thinking we need some corned beaf hash tomorrow. It’s just that sort of weather.
I’d make a fresh batch of Tea Cakes just for you!
Today I put a plate of bird treats outside the french doors and pulled the internal mini-blinds (just an example because it is so hard to explain. Excellent for homes with cats) down with blinds open so the cats could hide behind the slats.
The fuzzbutts are exhausted, they spent all afternoon staring out the window at all the flying fuds without a nap break!
That sounds like a wonderful dinner to me! Happy birthday to him as well!
That sounds like all you needed to get through.
We’ve only lost power that one night and that was only for a couple of hours. We have started running out of perishables but that’s just because we haven’t felt like going to the sto, not because we couldn’t get out.
The infrastructure today is much improved than the storm planning back in the '90s.
I’m glad you enjoyed!
After Hubs and I had laughed and pointed at the across the street neighbor long enough, I told Hubs that we shouldn’t laugh because they had a young child and maybe they really had an emergency…like no diapers or needed some cough syrup or something. We both laughed like loons when we saw the bag!
NF is a Karen and she is so very sweet, just an anti-Karen in every sense of the word.
Many hugs and good thoughts going her way. I hope things go well.
We still have bread, we have run out of milk, celery and white onions! I haven’t worn a bra all week, but it looks like that will be happening tomorrow.
Dang about the boat plans. I’m glad you found out before losing a lot of money!
We do, my worry here is what would happen if we both got run over by a beer truck. There are long term plans in place but nobody who would come over on a moment’s notice to give them dinner. I’m still working on that.
I know that I could count on Harry, but he’s 15 years older than me so that’s not a great long term solution.
Do ask SM about work paying for the shot though. The injury happened at work and they should have a process for this. If that falls through, I’ll kick in a few bucks to help the “No Lock Jaw for shoe” fund.
Do you have to wash his feet after walks through the salt slush? Or do you have some of those cute little booties for him? This snow stuff is all new and fascinating to me!
What a PITA! (very entertaining read btw) I hope work doesn’t fuss overmuch about the car still being there on Moanday.
That sounds so wonderful!
At least they haven’t all been dumped into a box with no writing. My CDO would be going nutz with that, I’d want to work unpaid OT just to get it cleaned up and sorted.
The world is probably better off that way. I’ll bet you and I could get up to some totally awesome stuff together. I’ll bet you would have loved to be involved in my door to nowhere! Probably would have done a much better paint job than me.
We have booties for when there is ice (wouldn’t want him to cut his paw pads). He dislikes them enough that we dispense with them for just snow. I keep a rag by the door to clean his feet off whenever we come back in, not just in inclement weather. I have contractor beige carpet and he sleeps in my bed, so it’s for my benefit as well.
That’s awesome! I don’t think I’ve ever posted my dining room table on here, but you reminded me of it, sorta. I love random art that just sort of presents itself to you.
For some reason I’m still sitting here while everyone else has gone to bed. I suppose I should consider doing the same myself. There’s supposed to be lots of snow here overnight. I’m hoping it’s not too bad as MusicMan has to work tomorrow at 4 in the morning.
Tonight’s soup was especially yum - wonder if it’s because I used Yukon Gold spuds instead of russets? Plus it was just enough for the 2 of us with no leftovers, so yay, since I’m the one who ends up eating leftovers - sometimes days after…
Tomorrow, I shall stuff some cabbage. Or I might try the casserole that’s all the ingredients of stuffed cabbage, but with alternating layers of chopped cabbage and the meat mixture in a lasagna pan, baked. Sounds just as tasty but lots less work. Must cogitate on the matter.
Roxy is learning to cross-stitch. From the photo Daughter sent, it looks like the picture is printed right on the fabric, and she’ll stitch color over color. I remember my mom started teaching me to embroider about the same age, but it really wasn’t my thing. I lost interest pretty fast. I’m glad she’s showing interest in it.
The snow has started - barely more than a flurry so far. Forecasts show it ending either by 3AM or 6AM or some other random time. We’ll see tomorrow if I’m shoveling or calling Jeffrey and his tractor. Morning will tell.
Well, in the last 7 hours since I posted I have accomplished nearly bupkis; I did clean my toilet bowls so I guess I wasn’t totally inert, but close to it. Will finish the tackleball game and then head off to bed before I can snack again. Snow is still on the ground and roads so tomorrow may be a lot like today in terms of (in)activity.
Nut, sorry to hear the car deal went FUBAR. But they’ll hold that bad number over your head forever so hope something can be worked out.
JtC for President!!!
Cookie, taking notes for 2-3 years from now when I’ll be looking for such a community.
Sticky Buns, that is one colorful dining set!
And off to watch the end of the game and get ready for slumber time. Catch y’all tomorrow.
You’re more productive today than I am, but I think I’d better wait for digestive distress to settle down before cleaning toilets (as of right now, doesn’t seem useful, as much time as I’m spending in the “reading room”).
Mildly surreal element to my day - I’m typing this about 7:30pm Pacific on 10 January. I was tracking an Amazon order, and it says it’s shipped, leaving the originating Amazon facility on 11 January. The tracking info is reporting in past tense.
Aren’t there any Fitness area attendants? I’m sure they’d be happy to explain and demonstrate. Perhaps there are some young ladies that you’d enjoy listening to explain/watching them demonstrate.
Pretty productive day for me. Did 1/2 hr WFH, filtered 4-1/2 gallons of water, swiffered the bedroom, and both sets of stairs, laundered 1-1/2 sets of sheets, stripped then remade the bed, Krogered. (Hubs went with) It was a disappointing trip as the shelves were close to bare. Oh yeah, the weather guessers were off by 4 hrs. They said it wasn’t going to start snowing until 6pm, well it started at 2pm. By the time we went to Kroger at 4:30, there was 2" on the ground. So, they were out of Hubs Lactose Free milk, the only lactose free milk was 2 cartons of whole milk, no fat free, no 1%, no 2%. Heck. They were also out of broccoli, no crowns, no stalks. The Progresso soup shelves were pretty thin. People really took advantage of the buy 8 for $1.29@. I was able to get 8 cans, but the food pantry will only be getting 7 as Hubs asked for a can of Creamy Mushroom. Another inch had fallen by the time we left the store.
For dinner I made linguini with vodka sauce, roasted garlic, basil & romano pork & angus beef blend meatballs (YUM!) and bunny spears (cukes), cottage cheese and corn, peas & carrots side dishes.
Surprising. It’s Minnesota not Georgia.
I resemble this remark.
fishy hugs for your MIL
AGREED!
Need to get to sleep asap since I’ll need to shovel in the morning and do a ton of dishes (did none today).
I wish I could find some authentic ones with minced/ground beef (that’s what I grew up eating) but I absolutely cannot be arsed to make them from scratch myself.
Swung by Meijer hoping they’d have shredded chicken.
Fifty dollars later … they did not have the damn chicken.
Plenty of other stuff, though. My freezer is now very fully stocked with easy-eat things.
I have a ton of household trash to take out, PLUS not one but two tanks’ worth of filthy used bedding, PLUS a kitty litter box.
However, it’s snowing like a mofo again.
Dammit.
Bound & determined to make that damn spinach quiche tonight.
That, or sear the chunk o’cow I got the other day on impulse (it’s so prettily marbled! I haven’t had a decent steak in furrrrever!)
Either way, though, my kitchen is currently a trip-hazard mess due to all the trash staged up by the door & the two tanks sitting there, and the replacement litter boxes too.
