I just looked up the word “hypocrite” in my Miriam Webster’s dictionary. It says, “see Needs2Know”.
All that shit you said sounds neither civil nor judgemental. I’m not saying you don’t have the right to your opinion, but exactly what are you trying to prove here? There are subjects on this board which I have no interest in - I don’t read nor respond to them. There are posters on this board I don’t like - I don’t read nor respond to their posts. But I don’t charge into threads screaming about what total assholes they are. Listen, if you whip out your dick and start pissing all over everything, the only thin you’re doing is making a mess.
If you’re policy is to not pay any attention to Esprix, or whoever, then stick to your guns and shut the fuck up.
Hi Esprix…didn’t think you’d mind. Won’t apologize either. Maybe I’ll look at a few posts just to see if I rushed to judge. Especially since Goboy has compared you to my beloved Oscar! Somehow I don’t think even you will be able to live up to the blue china.
Hi everyone! My name is Jodi and I’m a … LAWYER!!! Yeah, like almost all of you didn’t know that.
I’m interested in legal issues and I know a little bit about how do answer (some) legal questions. I’m a wee bit sensitive about lawyer-bashing and un-funny lawyer jokes (the funny ones are okay), because I tend to see them as attacks on a fraternity I’m proud to belong to.
I don’t post much about my personal life (though I have made a number of e-mail Doper friends who know more of the not-terribly-juicy details) because I’m not convinced it’s a wise thing to do – for me personally, I mean. This means I tend to post a lot about legal issues – precisely because those are the topics I (a) find interesting and (b) delude myself that I may have something of value to contribute. So I guess I’m a one-trick pony, too. We all are, to a certain extent, in that we post to threads we care about and don’t to threads we don’t. So on the one hand, I think none of us are above this sort of “accusation,” my response to which is – yeah, so what?
That said, some people do have a tendency to become focused on one topic to the detriment of all others. For example, almost every post Libertarian USED to make would be about libertarianism. (And I don’t mean to pick on LIB, who I think hasn’t gotten much better about this – so much so that I can’t even level the complaint towards him any more – but the “old Lib” (for lack of a better term) is the only example I can think of.) You might say “why do police wear blue uniforms?” and Lib would reply “in Libertania, there would be no police except for those who chose to pay to support them” – in other words, pretty much a non sequitir of an answer, a totally nonresponsive attempt to wrench the topic back around to his pet cause. And people complained about that tendency of his, too.
Now, I don’t see Exprix doing this. He does not insist upon talking about gay issues and being gay at every turn, regardless of topic. Instead, his experience of being a gay person colors his responses – just as my experience of being a lawyer (not the same, I know, but still) undoubtedly colors mine. And he talks about gay issues because he’s concerned about and interested in gay issues. Again, so what?
I don’t think any one of us has the right to expect another poster to refrain from posting information he or she thinks is important, entertaining, or informative. If you don’t want to read it, then don’t. It’s as simple as that.
Needs2know, out of a profound sense of boredom I did a little research. Turns out our initial run of bad blood (well, at least on your side) started during pepperlandgirl’s “Ask the Mormon gal” thread. Perhaps that’s what you’ve had in your head all this time. Me, I had completely forgotten about the exchange. (And you’ve been on about the clique of “anti-newbie evil regs” for just as long.)
I sincerely hope any perceived pithy comments don’t kill this thread.
I don’t think I’ll get involved here other than to drop in to say the following:
Esprix, you’re swell. I appreciate most of the posts from you that I read. I’m very glad that you think enough of the SDMB to post as much as you do. This place would be pretty dull if it weren’t for you and all others who take the time to offer information and points of view regarding subjects of concern.
Oh right - I’m not supposed to do that anymore. If I flame for any reason, right or wrong, and I apologize, I then get people coming out of the woodwork sighing and saying shit like “Oh Una, you’re doing it again. How pitiful.”
I’ve got some bad news for you sunshine. Not many people here want an apology - utterly sincere and heartfelt though it may be. They would rather go on about how the evil Una flamed them mercilessly, and how the poor dear is just so unstable, and we should all pity her. Why, she should drop to her knees and thank us that we allow her to post on our Board at all!
An apology that seems sincere and heartfelt goes a tremendous way towards eliminating any bad blood with me, as far as I’m concerned. There are few bad things that cannot be erased from my mind by a sincere, heartfelt apology. Too bad it also makes one look weak, when I think it’s exactly the opposite - it makes one look strong.
Um, OK- I’m trying not be offended by this, stofsky. Would you care to explain?
Excuse me? I posted maybe three times since I’ve become unemployed regarding it- once to a telemarketing thread recently, once in Kelli’s unemployment thread (to thank her for her support when I lost my job), and once likely in passing. If you want to get on MY case about being a “one trick pony”, first I strongly suggest you:
Go take a flying fuck through a rolling donut. When you’re done, call me a one-trick pony for the subjects I DO harp on: Disability rights, computer issues, motorcycle rights and responsibilities. I’m sorry if my recent (it’s only been three weeks, how “old” could it be getting already?) touchings on unemployment have become annoying or repetitive. Maybe you happened to read those threads in succession and figure I never stop talking about it. Either way, keep me out of your poster generalizing and bashing.
Zette
Cranky 'cause my unemployment check didn’t get here today.
It’s true I didn’t like what you did to her in that thread. She didn’t seem to mind but I found it a little creepy. Of course you set me straight that something she had posted in another thread made it fair game for you to throw it up to her later elsewhere. I think it was the nature of the subject that I found it a little more sensitive, sex and religion. Of course I know you have your problems with sex and religion, can’t blame ya for that one. She was your friend and I rather thought it a low blow at the time. Since then I’ve seen you throw in a comment here and there. You don’t generally post to the threads I find near and dear. Puzzles me a little too I guess. Thought you might be interested in civil liberties, affirmative action, social reform, that kind of thing. I guess a lot of people think I defend Equal Opportunity initiatives so vehemently just because I feel strongly about our social responsibilities to minorities and the like. Not exactly so, I’m a woman and this issue applies to me too in this male dominated world. Just a little curious why those topics don’t interest you a little more. I know sexual orientation is not covered under the pervue but aren’t gay people trying to change that? I’d be willing to welcome gays into the fold.
Esprix, you’ll be in San Diego in 29 days. I’ll be there in approximately eight months. Hell, I’ve still got to move to Rhode Island for six months first.
Awww, Zette, nothing personal. You just came to mind because you’ve done a few posts on the matter–I’ve seen your posts a lot over the last year or so I’ve lurked and I know you’re no one-trick-pony. I just needed a fourth so I didn’t have to say “Hi Opal.” Yours just happened to be one of the recent ones I’d read, and therefore was at the front of my alcohol-addled brain
Hey, I post to those threads and I’m gay. I don’t mention my homosexuality because it’s not usually germane to the discussion, but when it is, I do.
[hijack]I find I agree with you mostly, but your de haut en bas condescension – “our social responsibilities to minorities”–puts me off, as does your constant use of the “N” wordeven though it’s used in a satirical mode. And, FTR, gays don’t need to be welcomed into the fold–we’re already inside.
[/Hijack]
JTR, I have a number for you - two. That’s it. Two PlanetOut threads. Yesterday. One of which actually generated enough response that it might get bumped into Great Debates. The other not so much. In the past? Yes, a few similar threads, but it’s been a few weeks (IIRC). I hardly think this constitutes “littering.” My sincerest apologies if it has troubled you.
But as far as the second half of your post - rock on!
SuaSponte, my point about the mundane vs. profound was, basically, since some people post about The Meaning Of Life while others post about their favorite kind of jelly, who notices, let alone cares, that I might post more gay-themed threads than anyone else? (Not you, dear, “you” in general.)
And I would dare say that Cecil’s comment was unwarranted, whereas anything I might have said to JDT most assuredly was - for goodness’ sake, the man is obsessed with penises, something near and dear to all of our hearts. (Never mind his rabid bigotry and racism.) Cecil just tossed it in to be (un)funny. I think the two cases are miles apart.
goboy, you rock. “Felons to execute” indeed!
Jack Batty, appreciate the response - well put. And you didn’t even have to kiss my “tight little ass,” either! (Oh, and Needs2know, thanks for taking the higher ground and mocking my [now defunct] relationship with Dr. Boyfriend, a subject which has caused both me and him a great deal of pain. Obviously you read just enough of my posts to inflict pain, but not enough to give a damn - real nice.)
Honey, you hit the nail on the head - thank you for being so eloquent. (And for the same reasons, I also avoid posting too much personal information and stick to issues of import - perhaps this is yet another reason some would see me as one-dimensional.)
Dahling, Dutch people don’t live anywhere near fjords. Fjords are in Norway. We have, if you pardon the expression in light of this thread, dykes.
And I don’t talk about being Dutch all that much, it’s usually when people ask me questions.
Also, I was playing around with the thread title a bit using punctuation. The most hilarious one I could come up with was: “One trick, Pony Homosexuals!”.
I suppose this goes to show that I have absolutely nothing to add to the subject at hand. Oh well.
OK, sorry I jumped all over you. I am just under SO much stress from being unemployed!
